Well the Alabama Damascus that Kershaw uses is primarily carbon steel isn't it? That would give you some great edge holding, despite the rust prone nature of those blades.

Personally, I really enjoy CPM-154. It's been a dream to use the last two months. A freaking dream.

CPM-154 is one of the few steels I have always wanted to try but haven't. I've only heard fantastic things about it. Does anyone know how it compares to Elmax?

I don't really have much experience with ELMAX...but I don't think it compares very well in either edge holding or toughness. However I've sharpened both of these steels quite a bit, and the 154 is much, much easier to deal with. A reprofile took about half an hour, but the 0560's ELMAX had me working for a couple hours total.

The CPM-154 goes razor sharp really quick, similar to 14C28N. It keeps the original edge longer though, and after a reprofile to 16.5 degrees per side, it only touched a strop for about two months, then 5 swipes per side on the Sharpmaker and it was razor razor sharp again. After that, just the strop.

I never went that long with 14C28N before touching it up on the Sharpmaker.

Man. Now I want to try it even more! I'll have to pick up a Cpm-154 Blurs one of these days and try it out.

I.just can get on the deassist wagon, i don't get it

I can't stand assisted knives. I like the feel the precision and smoothness that went into creating the knife and I don't get that when a knife flies open. They're too loud, too. I do understand why a lot of people just keep them assisted though.

i really really like two of my factory manual knives, my JYD2 and 0550, sooooo buttery smooth. my JYD2 is still to date my smoothest knife

I used to have a JYD 2.2. It was crazy smooth even though the detent was semi-weak. The 056x is a great example of a insanely smooth manual opener. I'm sure the 055x is, too but I've never handled one. I need more knives with bearings.

I miss that knife.

I read my post and feel I should clarify. I don't think CPM-154 compares well to ELMAX. ELMAX is going to provide better edge retention and toughness.

My liking to CPM-154 comes from 154CM being a modification of 440C, and that it's a further modification. I liked it on paper, and after some time with it as a user, I've come to appreciate how well it holds a razor edge compared to how easy it is to maintain with just a strop and how easily it sharpens.

I've only had the experience of two steels, 8Cr13MoV and 14C28N. If I can scrounge up some money, then I'll be able to get that Damascus Skyline, but I won't be using it. Question: What do you guys put on your damascus blades to keep them from rusting?

Ah okay. That's unfortunate but I still want to give it a go just because it sounds like a nice all around steel.

The blades I have experience with are, 440A, 14C28N, CPM-154, 8CR13MOV, CPM-M4, VG10, D2, AUS6, and just recently acquired Vanax 75. All by Kershaw, except the M4, and VG10

Yeah can get it at a most places like Target..Wally World, can also get Bamboo Cutting board wipes..same stuff and can use 1 wipe over and over for awhile.. People also use RemOil but I never have so can't say its good or not.

Thank-You. I'll look into both of those, and maybe pick some up when I'm in town Thursday. I've also heard of RemOil being used a lot. Sounds pretty good from what I hear.

I'm hoping I can trade for that Red Skyline (SW) on the Exchange right now. Problem is that he's in Europe and I've never dealt with anyone overseas.

maybe not, i emailed him before i posted. I already sent payment. I just assumed you had as well
