what would you recomend for a first serious flashlight? under $50 and under of course

As DBag said, the Olight S10 is a great choice, as is the new M10. They offer different things. However, there are some questions you should ask yourself, that I'd like to ask as well.

  • Price range? Under $50
  • Battery type? AA/AAA/CR123a/CR2/18650 Li-ion?
  • Size?
  • Pocket Clip? Keychain light
  • UI? Twisty, tail clicky switch, electronic side button?
  • Desired output? A lot, don't need that much?
  • Modes? Low/Med/High? You need a super low moonlight mode?

These are important things to answer before spending money. I've found my idea pocket light, the Zebralight SC52w. It does everything I need it to do, as well as everything I want it to do. You should take a moment and thing about the list there and just get a general idea.

after doing a bit of thinking,
price: under $70
battery: preferably AA
size: not really sure as im new to this so id say 5-6 inches?
desired output: 150-400
modes: not really
thanks for the indepth list thing (:o) and any help in advance

Well, the new Olight S15 isn't out yet, and it's the S10 more or less, but it takes AA batts instead of the CR123a. My favorite light, the Zebralight SC52 is a AA light, and has a very high output, about 500 lumens. I think the standard cool white is $65-70 shipped from the dealer I get my ZLs from. They have slightly complex interface, so it takes some getting used to, but in my opinion it's worth it since you get every desirable output level from barely visible moonlight to holy crap 500lm.

Foursevens has the Mini MA, which is pretty inexpensive as well at about $32 shipped from Amazon. It takes a AA, and is one of the smallest AA lights. It has no pocket clip, but what I use is one of those Tec Suspension Clips. Others just use a lanyard. The Minis from Foursevens are pretty damn tough, last nearly forever, and Foursevens has one of the best light warranties around. I gave one of these lights away to one of my wife's students. She helped during the school play by running the sound board, and used that light during the show to see the sound script and the mixing board. She loved playing with it and using it, so I just let her keep it. I've since bought another one, and it's a great light.

If you want some of the best looking light (by that I mean tint of the beam and color reproduction in the light), I'd really recommend the budget light the L3 Illuminations L10. It's about $25 plus shipping, and uses one of the best LEDs available in terms of color and tint. It takes a AA, but outputs about a 100 lumens max unless you use a higher voltage battery like a Li-ion 14500 (AA sized Li-ion rechargeable). The fit and finish on these lights are hit-or-miss. I've been lucky so far. They also offer them with a Cree XP-G LED, which has a cool white tint with slightly more output.

Also from Foursevens is the Quark QPA. It's a single AA light with a tail clicky switch and a clip. It's bigger than the Mini MA, but also has a moonlight mode. Worth a look I think, but it's in the $50-60 range.

So, that's a good starting off point for AA lights. There are a loooot more than that, but those are the ones I have the most experience with. I recommend checking those out on YouTube and seeing what you can find. The YouTube reviewer "selfbuilt" has good overview videos and links to his full written reviews on CPF. They're a great resource I recommend you take a look at. Also, Going Gear's YT channel should have reviews on most of those lights, and he does a great job. They'll help you get a feel of the size of the lights and how they perform.

Cheers!

wow, thanks man, ill take a look, im a bit tired and am going to bed, but Im putting that on my to do list for the morning, thanks, ill tell you what i learn/decide/like more (weird phrasing) tomorrow.
night

My overview video of the 0801 is up. LooOOoOOove this thing. I just finished putting a new, totally perfect edge on it with the WE, and it's an effin' dream.

I decided I didn't like the wear marks on my Blur, so I did a few adjustments. Let me know what you guys think. i think it looks pretty neat

Hey stick, i have a few ideas in my head but i need your professional opinion..

Price: under 100
Battery: AA or CR123
Size: bigger than the S10baton
Pocket clip: yes
Interface: clicky tailcap
Output: max output ~350-400lm
Modes: H/M/L.. Moonlight fine, but not a dealbreaker.

Whatcha got?

Morning gents.

I currently use 3 types lights. At work I use the s10 and mainly due to the magnet in the tailcap. I work in demolition so being able to set the light on a metal door frame when I'm working on a breaker box is invaluable, it leaves my hands free to do what I need to do. When I'm not at work I use either the 4Sevens preon2 or the 4Sevens Quark Pro (QP2L-X). For the most part I use the preon2. The slim design of the preon2 makes it really easy to carry, just throw it into a pocket and it rides beautifully. Its max lumen level (192) is perfect for most uses and like I said, the balance of portability and output make it the ideal light for me for most of my uses. I rock the quark pro on weekends and for when I just want to have a higher output as it does 360 lumens I believe (although the xml2 they are using now bumps its output to about 417lms if my math is correct)
The quark pro I really like, but it doesn't disappear like the preon2 does. Although with the deep carry clip that 4sevens makes for the quark line, portability is much easier and it melds well with the clothes I wear.

Steb...quark pro QP2L-X. Moonlight and 4 levels of brightness plus emergency modes and fits all the specs you requested.

Thanks Stick, I like it too. Great vid, too! Can't wait to grab one of them.

Thank you. I'm pretty sure you'll love the 0801. I want to say, it feels as sturdy as the 0550, which is pretty nuts.

Damn, Stick! You really do enjoy and know your lights.

Not as much as the CPF guys, I just really enjoy them. :)

Well...Manny below gave a good recommendation, but I will put it out there that I've gotten more of a liking towards single cell lights over the last few months. It makes finding all the specs in one light like the one you've listed, but fortunately the market is so expansive that there are some options. If you're going for a 2 cell light, there are more options, but with one AA/123 with that kind of output and a tail switch for under $100, your options are a little limited.

For a CR123a light, take a look at the Olight M10. It's slightly bigger than the S10 because of the tail clicky switch, but still takes a single CR123. You lose the moonlight mode on that light, but the tail switch turns it on and the side button switches modes. It also has a crenulated bezel if that's a plus for you. It has the XM-L2 which is nice, and you get about 350lm on a standard primary CR123. Li-ion 16340 would get closer to 480-500 is my estimation is correct from the S10's output on Li-ion. It's a pocket rocket with a little more grip than the S10 which is smaller. Needless to say, you don't get the tail magnet because of the tail switch.

Keep in mind that if you would take a twisty interface or just a side button, your options would open up greatly. :D BuuUuuUuT let's continue on. You should take a look at the Eagletac DC series. They offer lights that do either AA or CR123, with pretty good outputs, with and without clicky switches. I've played around with a couple of them, specifically the AA twisty and the CR123 twisty. They're nice lights. Not that expensive, and you wouldn't be afraid to beat on them and throw them around. Eagletac is a great brand with a great warranty also. I was wary of them before, but now I can say they make good stuff.

Lastly for now...I'll go out on a limb and say you should look at some Spark flashlights. They have unique styling, and an interesting switch setup. They take AA, and I believe the 14500 Li-ions...I'll have to double check that. However, they use electronic switches like Zebralight and Olight, but they have two on the body. Each switch does the same exact thing, it's just that they're on different locations to accomodate how you hold the light. Each switch turns is on and cycles modes, there's no difference as they're both connected in series.

If you check out Going Gear, you'll see they have to original one on clearance for like $60, but also an updated version with the XM-L2 for regular price which is about $80-90.

YooooOOOOoO! Whaddup!? The Preon 2 is adorable. It has an endearing quality to it, even though I don't really like pen lights. I've put the Quark Pro on Marci's night stand now as her night light since the the cheap one she was using gave me a damn headache it woke me up. She was trying to fix the AC in the bedroom and I remember seeing nasty blue all in my face.

Anyway, that magnet on the S10 is awesome. It's even better with the diffuser since you can have an attachable lantern. :D

While we are on lights, anyone know roughly when the s15 comes out. It's going to be that or the quark. If it's a few months I'll just get the quark. Thanks.

That's a good question. Might be a little while...month or two? The CPF reviewers haven't gotten their production review samples yet, but a couple have engineering samples so I can't see it being that far out.

Thanks Stick. Quark it is. Will be my first 4Sevens light. Wondering if I could tap into that wealth of knowledge for a camera question. My wife says before another large knife purchase I must by a new camera. Looking at the t3i or something comparable. Will be mainly used for pics of my 11 month old as well as family outings. Maybe a few knife pics as well. Want a very user friendly camera as we have only used the pocket type cameras in the past. Thanks.

The t3i will serve you quite well. The stock 18-55 lens can handle most general shots and even low light shots can be taken as long as one plays with the shutter speed or ISO.
I use it for my family shots and some knife photography and I'm very happy with the results I get with my limited photography knowledge. The t4i has a touchscreen interface and continual autofocus when recording video, that's about the only real difference between them if I recall.
