I bought this Mayo TMX to John Tofte aka Oregonedge.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=677362
It was a very tempting opportunity, a great bargain.
But it was too nice to be true.

I bought this knife the 22th september. I asked the seller to take an insurance and a tracking. I was ready to send him more money for a maximum security if he asked me.
I received a proof that something has been shipped to someone the 29th september. It usually take 7-10 days for an international priority mail, so I waited. The 15th october, I send a first email to Oregonedge to warn him that the knife was still not here, but It could be normal. But I ask John if I could do something from his side.
The only solution he had was to wait if the knife would come back to him.
I told him that sending a 480$ knife overseas without even a small insurance was a suicide, and that he was responsible of the loss (unless the knife has never been sent). So he must do anything he can at his postoffice to find the parcel with the informations he has. After that, big silence.
So I did a paypal claim, but after paypal gives me reason, the seller blocked his account or he haven't money on his bank account.
I am screwed from 480$ at a bad moment in my life for me instead of beeing pleased to be the new owner of a fantastic knife.
I usually read some bad international deal, from Europe to USA. But It happens in the reverse way too...:thumbdn:

Its unusual for someone with 1200+ posts to be a con artist, but I guess its not unheard of. He has not posted here in 5 weeks. Good luck.

He sold quite a few nice knives during this time period, did he "stiff" anyone else who bought from him?

This does not read like a scam but who knows anymore...................

I've bought from him in the past without any problems. Shipping took a bit but he had matters to tend to and informed me of that. He was quite nice to deal with. Sorry to hear about this and I hope this works out for you.

the USPS answer :

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on September 26, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. No further information is available for this item.

So the scam is very simple : the seller buys a ready for shipping parcel, with a reservation number for mailing. He sends this number to the buyer as a proof but keeps the knife... :grumpy::thumbdn:

None news...
As I thought, this guy kept the knife and my money... Does anybody know what issue I can find with an international steal?

I am going to throw in my two cents worth here, He in my opinion is not a scammer, rather a very nice person that would not do this intentionally. These kinds of problems are the reason I have completely stopped all International shipping, too many things can go wrong. Guys if you are going to do international shipping make sure you are covered on both ends, priority flat rate envelope and small flat rate boxes have zero tracking and insurance is void. Some USPS shipments are trackable, make sure you are covered, unlike USA shipments, overseas shipments come up missing from time to time. I assure you again that I have met John and spoken with him enough times that I have to believe he is not a scammer, how he will handle this lost shipment I don't know, but I don't think it was intentional. Hope all turns out well.

Dave

His last posted feedback is on 10-19-09 from something else he sold.

He doesn't seem a likely suspect for scamming, but as mentioned, anymore you never know...

Maybe he has had some health issues causing him to not be on here or respond.

I hope it all works out and that your knife shows up

That's terrible, I'm sorry for your troubles.I hate to say it too, but this is the reason I alway's have avoided international transactions most of my time here as a member.I have made very few international deals with companies or private individuals. Not that we can't have problems domestically, but there is alot more that can happen once a package leaves our borders that we can do little about, especially taking legal actions. There is problems with types of shipping, tracking, insurance issues as well as customs. All a big headache should something go wrong. In the end if something doesn't arrive, either the buyer or seller is out the knife or money or both. I hope it works out for you my friend.

This is why all sellers should remind international buyers that they are not responsible for lost, misdirected, stolen or seized packages as this is typically the intended terms of an international deal.

Phillip

At this point, I'm more worried why a longtime reliable member has disappeared.
I hope he's OK and can get back to us about this transaction.

I have purchased from Oregonedge and the transaction was smooth as silk.

I also have done a couple out of country transactions and i take NO responsibility for any package that is leaving the US....but i make it perfectly clear to the buyer.

I know it sucks to loose a knife.....i have been truely scammed before.

According this note from USPS.com it seems it was shipped with USPS priority flat rate, which is nontracked nor insured.
I don't know why seller shipped this way, when you asked him you throw any money for insured and tracked shipping?

Well, we have no proof that he actually sent out the package at all-that's the main problem. The seller does not have responsibility for the knife after it leaves his country, true, but he has responsibility to prove it's been posted in the first place surely?

Agree with willgoy. Unfortunatelly I had the same experience (have no knife nor money) - it is somewhere here on "GBU" section...

the problems are:
- i haven't the proof that the knife was sent. This guy could buy a flat envelope with a number that prooves that usps expected a mail.but it is a good solution for keeping a knife and the money for a small amount.
- i asked a registred mail with insurance.if the shipping was too expensive, i could send the balance for a maximum security. I did many deals overseas and the only problems i had was because the mail wasn't registred. In that case, it is not a cheap chinese knife. It is a 480$ custom knife. So i'm sorry but he must not have sent it without precaution, specially when i asked him for.
- if he is honest, why has he blocked paypal intervention in my favor? Why has he disappeared from this forum just when I have begun my paypal reclaim? Heal problem? How convenient! I can't believe it.

Since I didn't have no experience with seller, I must agree completely with you.
My case was the same (maybe we didn't understand each other in shipping method), after PP resolution in my favor seller closed his PP account. Your seller has shipping number at least (he shipped "something" "somewhere"), my seller didn't ANY proof of shipping.
I don't know what to recommend - try to contact your bank and send chargeback to seller's issuer bank. But it is possible only if you paid with payment card connected to PP account.

I don't think it's "understood" or "standard" that someone takes no responsibility for international shipping unless they say so UP FRONT and give the buyer a chance to back out of the deal. If they do not then they are just as responsible to make sure that the buyer is satisfied with the deal as they would be if the buyer was in the United States. I have no comment on this particular instance since I know neither buyer nor seller.
