OT: Death Of Haagen Daz

I'm going back to South Ca this Summer. I'll try to hit one of those places.

I hate going back to So Ca.

By the time I see all the folks I'm supposed to, there is no more time to do what I want to do. Last time through I'd hoped to swing by Bill's Convalescent Hospital but ran out of time as usual. It's amazing how many activities my Wife finds are priorities.
Getting myself and my family back out of there alive are top priorities.

Can't do it- illegal in Ca.
Only criminals have high capacity mags.

It's the kind of State I wish a hundred foot wall of water would sweep through and clean the place out.

"Cheese. Good luck finding good cheese. There's a brand in Wal mart that is actually quite good- otherwise- I hope you like flavorless sponge material. Everytime I find a decent loaf of extra sharp cheese I feel I've been blessed. I'll eat it straight or with crackers or bread."

Being in Boise now, I guess I became spoiled by the fantastic cheeses available in and around the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. A product of the elitist wine industry in that area (I was in the wine industry for 25 years). My youngest daughter, a professional Napa Valley chef, sends or brings me care packages of cheese several times a year. Sonoma Cheese Factory has a sharp , white Cheddar that is almost orgasmic.

"Fruit- if you don't live near Calif or Florida- forget it. Here in Montana the fruit is flavorless, often inedible."

I help out a friend, in the summer, who owns a produce stand. Starting in April we have no trouble getting decent fruit and veggies, mostly from Calif and Florida. From there we have wonderful local asparagus, tomatoes, cherries, corn, peaches/necterines. Of course Wash. apples are plentiful. No complaints in Idaho, where more than potatoes grow.

"Peanut Butter- we lost the best- Hollywood brand, but fortunately, smaller factories still sell a very good product to local outlets. IN some places you can get Trader Joes- 2 bucks a jar, the way God intended it to be, without preservatives or lard added. Adams is only just acceptable."

Sorry......as a baby boomer raised on Skippy I don't agree that the oily, sticky, mix it up and still can't get it out with a knife, healthy stuff is the way god intended it. God intended it to be smooth and sweet and hydrogenated. :D

"Steak- my old man, raised in Kansas, will no longer eat steak. He does not believe the product offered is worth the price and disapointment. There is grass fed beef here that is worthwhile- but my old man can't get it in AZ."

I used to laugh at people who would go out and spend a bunch of money on a steak when I knew I could cook a filet mignon or porterhouse as good or better than any restaurant in town. About twenty or so years ago I started to lose confidence in my abilities until I finally realized that the stupid anti fat craze had made it impossible to buy a decent steak at the super market because every thing had to be leaner. This is the same principle that killed decent yogurt.....we've become so "health conscious" that many foods have been ruined. Now, of course, the Atkins is the new thing and so fat's OK, but not carbos. As most of you know, the "new" Atkins diet was around 30 years ago and is just as trendy and bullfeathers then as it is now. (edited: Additionally, the "lean" cuts of beef, many of which aren't worth eating, have risen in price simpley because they're lean.....not because they're intrinsically better to eat. Perfect example is "flank steak". My first wife and I used to buy this cut because it was dirt cheap. Stuff it with whatever, roll it up and cook it in a slow oven until doomsday, or it would be like the sole of your shoe (that's shoes still had leather soles). Now it's 5 to 6 bucks a pound and is no more tender and edible than it ever was (probalbly worse).

"Bread- if you can find bread worth eating by itself, congratulations. In Montana there's a brand called Montana Wheat that is good."

Oh Gosh......I couldn't disagree more. Even the super markets have all kinds of wonderful new breads....even in podunk Boise. If I want to go to the elitist Co-op I can find even better good breads but I won't pay through the nose. I grew up on Wonder bread....with red, yellow and blue balloons. You'd have to hold me down to get a slice of white bread down my gullet today . Mostly I make my own.

"Hotdogs- for God's sakes, will someone please tell me of a dog worth eating? No, not ball park- sorry- I said worth eating."

Koegels or Kowalski must be an Eastern thing because I don't ever remember seeing them in Calif or Idaho. I second the motion for Hebrew National. As an aside, I recently bought a package of on sale beef hot dogs that were, now get this......Albertson's brand. They were delicious! Albertson's Probably has many companies miking their branded products so I probably just got lucky.

"Please feel free to add to this list. "

The only thing I can think of off hand is canned tuna. Besides lower the content from 4 1/2 oz. to 4 oz. an 1/8 of an oz at a time (and leaving the can the same size, of course) the quality really sucks. Maybe you don't like canned tuna for cassarole and sandwiches but I do (did). Remember when you opened a can of tuna and it contained nice chucky pieces, rolled around each other in layers? Now it's just leftovers......shreads of tuna in oil or water. When you make Tuna salad it turns out like tuna mush. The good tuna goes for other high priced uses and the cans get the dregs. Yuk.

Ichor- Boise has a pop of what now? 1 million? That's a big enough market for both variety and turnover. The whole pop of Montana is not 1 mill

I disagree with you about Pnut butter of course, as you knew I would. I was raised on Skippy and Jiff and what have you, but let me ask you this; when was the last time you ate an entire peanut butter sandwich more than once a week? Try this once a day, and see if the extra lard in skippy or jiff doesn't get to you the way a McDonalds burger does.

You should be able to get Reeds Icecream in Boise. Try it out.

As for Bread- I'm willing, always looking.

I will try Hebrew National Dogs. I hope I can find some in Billings.

As an aside on your observation about Albertson's and regional distribution, there is a chain of similar stores in AZ. They had for many years the best icecream- every bit as good as Reeds. It was their house brand. One year they changed it and now it is not worth buying or swallowing.

take care,

Actually, "Boise" is only about 186K, but the so-called "marketing area" (including Nampa, Meridian, Caldwell, etc) is around 555K. I thought Boise was much bigger before I moved here three years ago.

Yes, I knew you'd disagree with the peanut butter evaluation but I have to point out that I eat PBJ sandwiches at least 3-5 times a week, including folded half sandwichs in the middle of the night. I've really tried to like that oily "heathy" stuff but it leaves me cold (especially if someone keeps it in the refrigerator).

BTW, as a person who can't understand why anyone would eat at McDonald's more than once, I have to add that a friend of mine bought me a Big Mac a few years back. Because, at the time I was rapidly falling in love with her, I tried to eat it because, for obvious reasons, I didn't want to hurt her feelings. I had to gag down half of it before I found an opportunity to, surreptitiously discard the rest in the trash. As it turned out it wasn't the only thing that we found incompatible. :p

Being an ice cream kinda guy, I will look for Reed's.

Ichor, you need to try a jar of Trader joes peanut butter. It is not like Adams. Every once in awhile Adams is good, but for the most part, it seems to be old, 3rd rate peanuts ground and left in storage for too long.

Laura Scudders isn't too bad. The natural stuff is an aquired taste- especially unsalted.

I will bow to your jiff or Skippy though- if that makes you happy. I'm actually glad to meet a peanut butter guy. I remember what I liked as a kid- was there a brand called Peter Pan peanut butter?

My wife always liked Reed's Pralines and Cream the best. I like vanilla. I'm a vanilla guy. You should be able to find it in those 2 gallon (or so) tubs

I'm too old to spend time acquiring any more tastes.....and Yes, I dont' think Peter Pan is available anymore, at least not in the West. It was my favorite.....more sugar :D I am also a vanilla lover.......the advantage being you don't have to vacillate for 20 minutes at the Baskin=Robbins over what flavor to buy. I love B-R French Vanilla, but I have been inside one in years.

And there is no Trader Joe's in Boise. Or Baker's Square which truly tics me off. :(

"It's the kind of State I wish a hundred foot wall of water would sweep through and clean the place out."

There are still a lot of fine people living out here on the left coast friend and not all live on high ground.
Greg

I'm sorry Greg. I grew up only a few miles from Tustin- in Anaheim.

I wish you fine people would elect fine people.

I mean it when I say I can't stand what they've done to the State I once loved. Look what they've done to the desert.

How can we tell anyone what life was like in Calif in the 60's and early 70's- how good it was? So, allow me a little inflamatory rhetoric, and I'll promise not to use my influence with the OLD MAN above and actually send a 100 foot wall of water to Ca. Might have come in handy last summer, though.

I want to say "Yeah, but!"

Things change, and not always for the better. A friend used to live several miles out of Reno on Geiger Grade, and I recently took the Carson to Reno route and there was absolutely NOTHING I recognised past Geiger Grade, it was Urban Sprawl eating up formerly arable land like cancer.

I also lived in California until my 20's - haven't been back lately. We used to visit my wife's family yearly in West Covina. One year we went back and there was gang graffiti all around West Covina.

Modesto, Fresno the same.

You think, Ripper, that maybe munk was speaking figuratively?? Or do you really think that he wants to drown you and your neighbors? I lived in No. Calif for 55 of my almost 59 years, and finally left because of the ridiculous things that the bureaucrats have done, and continue to do, to the most beautiful state in the union. You're wrong tho', munk.....those politicians shouldn't be drowned....they should be flogged daily for an extended period of time. You don't really wanna drown Ripper do ya'? :D :p :p :D

Of course not; put his name on the Master List and as we drive through the area for the last time we'll throw rafts out to those so listed.

It was the most beautiful State in the union- even beyond Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. It could be a Garden again but as a society we must come to grips with codependency. We enabled the greatest place in the lower 48 to become a failed social experiment. Who'd have thunk RULES would choke what was once a bastion of individual, free thinking?

munk

No problems at all with me my brothers. I know Munk was putting into words something that almost everyone(me included) has thought about someplace at sometime in their life (and is absolutely correct; that with all the fires last year, we could have used that wall of water and still might need it this year). I've no thought of this going any further than I live here; I'll never speak ill of where you live and expect the same in return.

Munk,
My first duty(1973-76) out here I lived in Anaheim (near Harbor and Ball). Did you ever get out around the eastern side of the Salton Sea? I love the desert down that way. The Arizona desert ,around and north of Yuma, is my favorite though.
Give me a shout if you get down this way, there's a good hamburger place (Omega) just around the corner and I know some places we can have a cold one/shoot some pool/swap sea stories etc. I think I even got some 45 ball and .357 around here that we could send down range. In the mean time I'll keep an eye open for that raft.

Regards,
Greg

Greg, when/if the wall of water comes, you can always stay at my place--my dome is at 2400 ft, and has the potential of becoming beachfront property one of these days :D

Happens all the time. Vicious circle of less rules, then idiots make it hard 4 others, so add rules, folks depend on new rules, become idiots.

Don't forget making babies as fast as you can with no provision for raising them.

Deep down, near the brainstem, there is a part of me that would like to do nothing more than make babies I don't have to pay for.

>>>>>>>>>

Greg- I know those crosstreets. I lived between Lincoln and LaPalma.
Last time I went through I couldn't recognize anything. Anyone remember Atwood?

Hey- is Juzarr's (sic) a little convenience store, still across from Disneyland? We had a saying when I was a teenager- at Juzar's you had to be at least 21 to buy beer. 21 inches tall, that is.

munk

:D:D:D Exactly. then ya let the state raise them, and ya got a workforce ripe for corp exploitation. Yaaay, greed

I call that part of the brainstem the 'lizard brain', also the part responsible for driving chemical addictions. It can talk louder than the Id, Ego, and consicence combined, plus talk over any other voices one might have in ones head:D

Keith

Everyone calls it the lizard brain. What is this docile work force by evil calculatiing industrialists coming from?!! comic books? No one needs the State to raise children to find a work force.

Ferrous- look at the taxes and percentage of GNP the Government took in in 1965 and look at it now. Two parents work to provide the same standard of living as one modest job did in the 1950's, 60's and early 70's. The State will have to provide free day care soon- there's no one home!

Anyway, I've always been very fond of lizards. My sons and I are going looking for some this summer. A rite of passage- munk passes down love of lizards to offspring.
