OT : Flashlights

Nothing to be forgiven for. New toy categories all have different learning curves. Hell, I still don't know what a good number of the newer Busse acronyms mean.

Generally, Hotwires are semi home-brew incandescent lights. Essentially, a factory flashlight shell, typically a Mag, is gutted, aftermarket high-amp rechargable battery packs are installed, the plastic lens is replaced with a high-temp boron silicate lens, the plastic reflector replaced by an aluminum version, and the whole setup is capped with a high-output high-pressure incandescent bi-pin bulb.

For example, a Surefire M6 with its highest output bulb cranks out 500 lumens for only 20 minutes. One of the best written-up Hotwire conversions crank out 500 lumens on low power for almost 2 hours, or 1150 lumens on high for just over 45 minutes.

It's supposed to be a great way to dip your toes into the modified incandescent pool, and it's written up here: http://lights.lightrefineries.org/?page_id=9

Well since I started the thread I was gonna go out today and take some nice pic's.... but the rain had other plans for me I guess. Here's a pic of what I have in my home office... minus several weapon mounted lights.

There are 2 G2's, 9Z with Clicky, M4-CB, 8AX Turbo, 3P with detanator extension and turbo head, E2E, and a Surefire Hurricane light.

Yuppers that's where I got it... it's a 1040 pelican case with custom cut foam. They cut them for 12 123a's but I recut 2 holes for spare bulbs.

I want to get this one. it has really good reivews.

Ooooooh! This is starting to become troublesome. I've got a few Surefires (C3, G2, G2, E2e, Aviator), a couple of Fenixes, converted my son's Maglite to LED, ..., but I now have a powerful desire to start fires with a flashlight. I'll start prowling the light forums, but does anybody have a good bet on a starting point. The ROP looks easy and fun.

Thanks,
Dave

PS - Thanks Raden for the Lighthound tip.

Lighthound is awesome -- highly recommended

They tell me they are openning a retail site soon. It'll be REAL nice for those in the Houston area :D

OK, you guys are evil. I just ordered an HDS EDC U60 from Battery Station on the closeout special. Seems like a great light and a good deal. Unfortunately I missed the $125 sale but still got a good price.

How do you compare Battery Station to Lighthound as far as service and reliability? What are some other recommendations for where to buy lights?

I have one basic Surefire and have been looking for another for quite some time, but decided to try this instead because of the closeout price. Hopefully I won't be starting down the slippery slope with flashlights the same as knives...
