Nothing to be forgiven for. New toy categories all have different learning curves. Hell, I still don't know what a good number of the newer Busse acronyms mean.
Generally, Hotwires are semi home-brew incandescent lights. Essentially, a factory flashlight shell, typically a Mag, is gutted, aftermarket high-amp rechargable battery packs are installed, the plastic lens is replaced with a high-temp boron silicate lens, the plastic reflector replaced by an aluminum version, and the whole setup is capped with a high-output high-pressure incandescent bi-pin bulb.
For example, a Surefire M6 with its highest output bulb cranks out 500 lumens for only 20 minutes. One of the best written-up Hotwire conversions crank out 500 lumens on low power for almost 2 hours, or 1150 lumens on high for just over 45 minutes.
It's supposed to be a great way to dip your toes into the modified incandescent pool, and it's written up here: http://lights.lightrefineries.org/?page_id=9
