OT: Gear and Tools Used by SURVIVORS!

Not exactly gear, but......... does anyone recommend any survival or bushcraft books? I've seen books by Nessmuk, Kochanski and Canterbury all on amazon.

Any of those you like or dislike?

I keep hearing that The Art of the Deal is the second best book ever! Even if unrelated to bushcraft, maybe you ought to consider carrying it in your pack.... Sorry Silver, I just couldn't resist :D

Speaking of fire kits, PM101 has another doozy about his fire kit. I swear my local fire station may not have enough engines ready to go for that amount of "fire power" :D

Now I don't want my super awesome book question to get lost in the shuffle, but here is a short instagram video of Guy going to town on a downed pine with a Silky katanaboy.

It seemed like at the time I was looking for a backpackable saw, EVERYONE was using a Bahco. That's what I've had for a year or two and I really like it. Now all I seem to see are Silky's kicking butt in comparison vids. I'm anxious to see which models will be available through SURVIVE!

Any suggestions for a beginner to hammocks. I been eyeing the ENO junglenest with atlas straps and a pro fly XL. I'm trying to stay affordable too, I want to see if it's for me before I buy a warbonnet. :)

ive been using silky handsaws for years, i learned sbout them during a stint as an arborist. ive tried a few different brands but nothing compares.

i bought an ENO double nest with my rei dividend not too long ago but have not been able to use it yet. A friend has one and really likes his.

The double nest looks great, especially for the price, but no bug net here will most likely lead to me being carried away. If not Zika or some crazy new one that no one's heard of will get me. Murphy's law was brought about because of me. :) It's still very much an option though. But the gaurdian bug net looks like a pain compared to all in one type set up.

I agree with that logic!

Do it! Its a great setup. I have a double nest, atlas straps and profly.

Now that I know about the junglenest I may have to buy one. Also look at hennesy hammocks. They are all in one sets and by the time you buy all the eno stuff the cost is about the same

If I look around the jungle nest was about $79 in one place. And I was trying to decide between the pro fly and the pro fly XL

I think the one i have in the pic is just the regular pro fly. It was plenty big for that weekend and it rained the entire time. I was perfectly dry. The atlas straps have a series of loops that allow youbto adjust the length/height of the hang, but also act as drip loops so even water running down the straps doesnt make it to the hammock

Good to know. I've been interested in hanging for awhile and decided last year to snag a tent I got a good deal on instead. (The rest of my hammock funds went to so.easy S! Blades, I don't think any of you can fault me for that.)

Edit. I can get the junglenest atlas straps and pro fly tarp for $150. Don't seem bad to me.

i got in on the ultimate hammock kickstarter, i figured it was worth spending the 65$ to see if i like hammocks and all that before i dive in and get the good stuff.

When I decided to try hammock-camping, I bought Grand Trunk. The ultralight single-person was <$20.

A double-person "skeeter-beater-pro" was given to me as a present. My wife and I took our 1-year-old daughter camping and we slept all together on a campmor air-mat laying in the skeeter-beater, with an equinox nylon tarp as cover. We weathered a heavy rain-storm one of the nights, I kept thinking how nice it was not to be sleeping in a tent on the ground.

Not to de-rail, but has any one tried any of the tent hammock hybrid tents? Like the tensile branded ones?
