OT: Gear and Tools Used by SURVIVORS!

Don,

You can try some packs from Osprey. They have the best mesh back suspended packs I have seen. My wife has a couple and they work well for her.

Yeah, LEAF (Law Enforcement & Armed Forces) is the one I had in mind. I thought that the other one was a civilian adaptation. There's a guy on YT (Luke @ TheOutdoorGearReview) who does quite honest review of many, many gears and he has a lot of material on Arc'Teryx & Osprey. I will put his channel up on the other thread for Silver to view. He may even have some material on other backpack makers.

The problem with Osprey's side mesh pockets being that they can snag if in the dense woods.

Justin you ever have your hands on the FILBE packs?

Lol I'm not doubting that casino. They are tons more comfortable too I'm sure. I looked at kelty's but shy'd away when I seen the prices. I'm a penny pincher and have to generally have good cause or reason for gear. Momma doesn't except cause I just want it. Lol, but I still wanna snag an external frame to check it out.

A LOT of good options, you guys are TOO helpful though because I'm not really on the hunt for a bag, I'm just being curious :D

If I can keep the cost to about $100 I'm happy, BUT I'm not really shopping around. I just wanted thoughts on Maxpedition vs 5.11 as they're both names I've seen come up a lot, but in just realizing now how different they are as far as country of origin and price.

Specifically I wasn't sure if anyone had bad experiences with 5.11 or really thought Maxpedition was superior because it is US made and more extensive.

A guy I work with carries a rush 72 out of town every week. Jammed down with his work cloths and half full of gear. GB hatchet and all. He swears by it. I got the $30 SOG knock off and hiked 6 miles with 30 lbs and the waist strap broke and some of my stitching come out on some webbing. Its what I use when I travel though. For its purpose I still don't know if the $30 was justified.

I have a Condor compact assault pack, which is the poor man's Maxpedition falcon II......... nearly identical without all the high quality touches. I've barely used the pack and I don't see myself wearing it out, but the stupid clearance sale on the Maxpedition website got me curious and has me day dreaming about things I don't need!

I have an insane amount of Arc'teryx gear. Like probably enough to make my own channel. When I watch reviews they never help me though. I think I have enough experience wearing them to know exactly which changes I want for which applications and go from there. The downside is they make so much specific gear, that you can find something that fits a super specific need and end up with way too many pieces of it.

Ok so off the top of my head:

Leaf stuff:

Alpha Jacket Gen 1
Alpha Parka Gen 1
Alpha LT jacket Gen 2
Alpha LT jacket Multicam Gen 2
Wraith
Atom SV Gen 1
Atom SV Gen 2
Atom LT Hoody Gen 1
Atom LT Hoody Gen 2
Atom LT Jacket Gen 2

Alpha bib pants Gen 1
Alpha pants Gen 1
Alpha LT pants Multicam Gen 2
Alpha LT pants Gen 2
Alpha LT pants Gen 1

Bunch of midlayers like the Naga Hoody, Chimera blah blah you get the point.

Now they have so many footwear options oh man.

You're sitting on a nice chunk of change there my friend! You ought to consider cashing out on eBay since you will be very preoccupied in the next few years chasing your lil-made-by-Justins ;)

Anyone ever use the FILBE ruck pack?

That new Maxpedition Gyrfalcon looks pretty sweet and not too far out of my range. Damn you silver I thought I was done looking for awhile!

TT,

I've never tried the FILBE. I was told the ILBE didn't fit well over plates and that the FILBE addresses that problem. I never tried to see if it was true. I don't hike with plates so I never looked into it much. I did look at all the pouches etc to understand what it was and it looks like a great system. For me packs are all about the fit so I tend to stick with a brand once I find something that works. I suspect the Coyote is a little better for blending in to civilian life compared to the Marpat as well.

I wouldn't have thought to check if that kinda stuff sells for anything.

I am pretty sure that lightly used Arc'teryx has always a buoyant market. Personally speaking, used clothes have never been something for me but I have sold plenty of marque clothes, shoes and sporting gear that were too new and valuable just to giveaway to Goodwill. Anything else which was used but not abused and not marquee, went to the local Goodwill. It's so liberating to declutter the cr*p you will probably never ever use again ;)

Just thinking about it, none of it I'm ready to get rid of. The alpha jacket has a patch on it and a couple tiny spots of delaminaton so it's going back to warranty soon. Probably get a new one out of the deal if not some more patches. The thing has been beaten like crazy.

When it gets too beat up I'll retire it and switch to the parka for appropriate weather.

The rest I don't want to part with at all!

Ha! Sorry....... but not sorry ;)

Unlike you true woodsman and adventurers I'm just at a point where I'm whoring out day packs. So many good options out there to only have one!

So.... I love packs and bags almost as much as knives... Finally got around to googling the KHARD 30... Awesome bag! Pricey as all hell and apparently came in a grey color (meh) but the design is exactly what I would want... Too many hobbies!!![emoji35]

Hey guys, I'm a pack dummy... especially with Justin's favorite brands, but what makes that KHARD over $400? The materials?

I read the features on their website, is it all that goes into weight reduction that makes it so special?

Ok SURVIVORS!, thoughts on 5.11 vs Maxpedition backpacks? Features? Materials? Quality? Any other considerations?

I think they both make good product and I have both. I prefer the 5.11 rush packs because you can interconnect different rush packs. They are heavy though. I'd suggest you figure out what size you want and go from there. You can't go wrong with either.

It comes in Wolf, Crocodile and Multicam.

Wolf is the most popular. Arc'teryx really was the trend starter in the "urban gray". It was developed.. here watch this video, it's short:
