A year or so ago there was a thread about leaving the list price in the sales thread. I've left most of mine-- the ones I mark $OLD it is mostly because of force of habit of changing it.

I know it is a 100% personal choice and I'm gonna keep leaving mine viewable (unless there's a good reason why I shouldn't that I'm unaware of) and I'm not campaigning to rewrite Exchange rules or anything like that...

So, let's hash it out freshly here about the upside & downside of LEAVING PRICES VIEWABLE in the Exchange...

And feel free to "set me straight" on the issue publicly or via PM <your choice>, I'm a big boy I can take it...;)

Here we go again...

10 years ago everyone always left the price up. Then a few years ago it flipped, and now only a few of us still leave them up. IMHO, most of the new guys take down their prices just because they think that is the norm.

Maybe we can win hearts and minds, and get more people to leave the price up.

I'm for it. How are young piglets supposed to know what a price should be if they can't find anything to judge by,?

As a noob piglet as recently as a few months ago, I found listings where the prices were left up to be very helpful. Thankfully I pretty much knew off the bat that the prices on E-bay were suspect. Google did help me find other sources for original prices on some stuff in ganza threads, etc..., but that only helps to a point.

I also wish the Busse specs and pricing sticky was kept up to date.

The only reason I take the prices down is folks will drive you crazy wanting to buy it or trade for it if the price is showing. I've done the jumbo --SOLD-- and still get a dozen messages but when the price gone it doesn't happen. I've never cared too much either way to be honest. I do my own research to value what I'm selling.

Twice in the recent past I've PMed about buying a knife via phone, and made a commitment to buy said knife. I get to the computer a couple of hours later when not driving and they price has been replaced with s SPF. Well, I'm not so smart, quite absent minded and a total loof; I can't remember the price! So... I have to embarrassingly PM the seller and ask he price. As a matter of fact, this happened to me last night! I'm 100% for leaving the asking price posted!

-Will

My current practice is to subdue the price, while marking it sold; so it will go from "$400, shipped" to $400SOLD!!

Aftermarket is a fickle thing... first there's what Busse sold it for if you were able to take advantage of the opportunity by vesting your interest into it which seems to be many folks' ideal target buy price without too much thought into how the next guy will benefit from seller's said vested interest/commitment.
At the opposing end of the spectrum there's the Weimar-esque let's make a living off of auction site pricing... 'nuff said about that.
Then there is the exchange, where as a seller with little recent info to work off of you kind of throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks  with hopes of not taking a loss and as a buyer constantly watching for a good deal to snag so you can scratch that next itch you maybe didn't even know you had. :D

Just like everything else in life, you win some & lose some, but if you break even when all is said and done or slightly better, great. If not, no biggie, and YES, approximate price history indicators are very helpful to all who wish to do their own research. ;)

I leave the prices even in instances where buyers ask me to take them down and I never understood why people remove them. Then again, if I score a knife for a good price and end up selling it, I usually list it for a good price. It's a form of paying it forward :).

Well I will be in the Minority here so-It is really nobodies business what a particular knife was sold for, it is an exchange of goods and services between the seller and buyer. The seller posts a price, the buyer or consumer determines if it is a fair price or not and then acts, also sometimes we are fortunate to get a great deal and if we decide to turn around and sell the knife someone will say he bought that knife for $500 and now wants to sell it for $600 that's BS-We live in a society where people can trade, sell, or buy things without everyone else knowing what was paid for the goods or services-Just my opinion, I will continue to mark knives sold without the price, because at the end of the day it is really nobodies business-People can also look of values of knives on the Busse Collector Page-Supply and Demand- if someone is willing to pay the price the item is not overpriced-Cheers!!!

I've never sold anything here but on another forum I frequent we normally leave the price and edit the title of the post to SOLD. Saves people the trouble of going thru dead listings.

Tommy's post spurred a thought in my mind that there is a consideration that maybe hasn't been raised:

Although I, as the seller, may have no problem with leaving the price viewable...

The buyer, OTOH, may not want anyone to know what price was paid
...

Do you think this needs to be taken into consideration also?-- after all, a sale on the Exchange is a two-party covenant, it is not fully all about the SELLER's wishes exclusively.

For example think of the fallout of angry spouses which know your BF username/password being able to search/view purchases and prices come to mind as an example of the BUYER not wanting a price listed but not having a way to make the sales price non-viewable.....:mad::thumbdn:

Of course, the BUYER can ask the SELLER to keep names out of the thread. This would be the most wise decision.

Please, let's continue with this discourse...there won't be a consensus probably, but at least everyone will be able to look at the issue from many different viewpoints and make a more "educated" decision!:)

[Shrug]......one could argue that if a "fair" price is what someone is willing to pay, then their knowing the previous selling price shouldn't make a difference.
