OT/SS.22 Rifle?

The Ruger 10/22 was the first rifle that I bought. I was 13 or 14 when I bought it. I sold it 20 years ago, an I regret selling it. IMO, the 10/22 is the best .22 you can get. There are MANY aftermarket products available for this rifle. I look forward to picking up another 10/22 to teach my son how to shoot.

Marlin 60SS

I know there are lots of people who like the 10/22 but it simply leaves me cold. There is something about a tube-fed .22 that just makes me happy.

Here is the Ruger 10/22 I put together, not stainless, it has an aluminum bull barrel (threaded for a can), aluminum receiver and a Boyds stock, super light weight. You can buy tons of after market accessories for the 10/22.

I like the 10/22, but in my opinion, there are a couple "must have" aftermarket replacements. They are made by a company named Volquartsen; first is their Auto Bolt Release (so that you can simply pull back the bolt to release it rather than having to use two hands) and the second is their Extended Magazine Release.

Ruger 10-22 will be the best rifle you could get. Accurate. Inexpensive. Last forever. And there are like 500,000,000,000,000 accessories for it. Barrels, carbon fiber nick knacks and lightened fluted parts.

And they are just about the funnest gun I have ever shot.

I recall my Ruger stainless 10-22 was only stainless in the barrel. The receiver is aluminum and most (all ?) of the hardware is carbon steel stuff. I'd recommend buying the plain carbon steel 10-22 and save the money. Teach him the value of keeping the barrel clean and oiled. Later on, you can rebuild the plinker with an aftermarket stainless bull barrel and turn it into a custom version 10-22.

Bigfattyt is exaggerating about the 500,000,000,000,000 accessories. There are only 400,000,000,000,000.:)

Ruger has a newer varient of the 10/22 out. It basically mimics the AR-15 platform with grips, stocks, etc. but is based on the 10/22 receiver and takes its aftermarket mags and trigger units etc.

If you want a first time rifle for a youngster I would go along with the more steps to ready the gun for each shot the better crowd. A pump, turn bolt, or lever action may help that person go through their shooting steps before each press of the trigger.

For a first time shooter I like to introduce them to the machanics on something with zero recoil and not a ton of power. The pump pellet gun seems to be about ideal for this usage and can be done in your garage instead of, like most people, needing to go to a range to fire a 22lr. Even the staunchest anti-gunner really enjoyed destroying ice-cubes with the pallet gun from across the garage.

I agree, if its a first rifle for a young kid, go bolt, or single shot. Graduate to a semi auto.

I agree basically, makes a lotta sense.

However...+ 1 for the 10/22... As a safety/control measure for beginners, you can do what i did with my kids. Dad carries the ammo & issues 1 round at a time.

Guys--- I went with the Ruger 10/22 SS AWM. ;)
Thanks!

good move, the 10/22 will give you less problems than any semi auto made, and is pretty accurate as is:thumbup:

Unless you get into serious bench shooting you'll never need to trick it out, and I like to keep 10/22's as is for the light weight. I use bolt actions for my bench shooting.

Good choice. That was one of my first guns. I need to pick up another one of these days.

nice rifle... I like that configuration. you put it together yourself from parts, or did you buy it more or less like that? where you you prefer to buy your 10/22 guns/parts/accessories?
