Update:
Doctor came in and said "Today is the day!" They're taking him off of the propofol which is what has kept him in a state of amnesia so he won't remember what has been happening and going on. They are going to cut his fentanyl in half which is a pain medication. They are going to put him on presedex which will make him tired but still able to function and remember things. Presedex also keeps him more calm than the propofol has. Propofol has a tendency to cause anxiety so when he's been waking up and starts his heavy and fast breathing, that's why. After the medication change, they are going to put him back on spontaneous ventilator meaning he will be initiating the breaths on his own and taking the breaths on his own but the ventilator will kick in if he isn't doing what he's supposed to do. Today is a big day!

Sounds very positive! Fingers crossed...

C'mon, Michael. Breathe dangit.

He is still mildly sedated, off the ventilator and breathing on his own. as of 6 minutes ago.

Sorry to hear of the ailments, and hospital time Michael.

Hopefully it is a faster recovery than they expect, and less discomfort than you have had till now.

Update:
Dad is breathing on his own and is between 12-16 breaths per minute which is normal. They tried to get him to sit up and sit in the chair but as soon as he realized his arms weren't tired down anymore he tried to pull his tube out so that was a no go. For 2 hours before I got here the nurses and doctors had tried to get him to respond to commands and he wouldn't. I held his hand and rubbed his arm and leaned in and said "dad can you squeeze my hand? I need to know if you're OK" ...he squeezed hard. Then waited a minute and did it again and has not loosened his hand off of mine for 10 minutes. He is swallowing now. He is moving a shoulder to adjust in his bed from time to time. He's doing great!!!!!

Keep up the progress Michael we're all pullin' for ya.

This is unbelievably welcome news! Thanks so much for the update ...
