Our "Front Porch" ....

I have some news to share! As posted last month, my Son was born on December 10th, he is doing very well! It is quite a special thing being a dad, as some of you may know. The day before my son was born, I had a second interview for a promotion at work. Yesterday I found out that I got the job-with a decent, and timely, bump in pay! I hear news either good or bad comes in 3's. I wonder what the next piece of good news will be? Perhaps a flash sale success for a production bowie is in my future? :)

Congrats! Nothing like being a parent...and grandparent.

Maybe a CF scale is in your future.:)

I "bumped" our "Breaking Bad" sidebar over here to the Porch to keep the photo thread clean. Carry on.

Wow...that would be insane!...but I'd have to buy a new TV

I struggled, Needed to put a TV in my Theatre room in the finished basement and was looking at the timing, I knew about the new technology but was wary.
I went to BB and was pretty stoked. Got a Sony 70" 4K and the "newest" Sony 7.2 4K flagship AVR and a Sonk 4K player.
Went with the HDMI cables to handle the upcoming 2.2 format (Tv and AVR 2.2 ready as well) .... Great experience to watch a movie in 4k, Family enjoys it.

The system sounds Amazing.... I mounted 2 more speakers. :)

That sounds like an amazing system. Are there many movies available in 4k yet?

I used to be on top of my game but have slacked off considerably the last several years. My Tv is a 2010 top of the line Sony. It was the beginning of the 3D movie scene. We have watched a total of about 3 or 4 3D movies since we had it. My AV was a top of the line Onkyo (forgot the model number) but when it went sour I replaced it with a modest Denon AVR. Most of my movie watching now is via Apple TV,which most movies have sub par sound. My speakers are still pretty nice. I have a 5 piece Mirage system with 2 in ceiling (back) Infinity speakers along with a Velodyne sub. I can still get pretty good sound but I have to watch a disc on my PS3 instead of the Apple TV.

There is a dozen or so now and more coming all the time. ALL movies are shot in 4k and have been for some time so the content is there. Most studios use Sony Cameras as well.
There is netflix content as well as Directv is about to be 4k. Even on HD content the tv and receiver "upscales" the content and it is noticeable.
It really is an intoxicating experience and one that leaves the viewer wanting to watch 4k more and more.
Took me a long time to retire my Levinson front end but the new formats and 7.2 has softened the blow. I still miss "that Sound" for just audio listening....oh well.

Alford...that's my kind of wall! I'm a bass lover...not the Meghan T. type...YUCK!!! But the kind that rattles your eyeballs and brings smiles.

As for movies...EVERYONE should take the time to go see American Sniper.

I fought Home Theatre for years (decades) was 2 channel hardcore Audiophile. I miss it sometimes. My theater set-up plays music and it sounds amazing.
The Movie part is just plain fun.

i have got a 2 channel room and a 5.1 system in the living room - of course i had to cut corners with all the components to have both - but where would that end with all that audiophile stuff? :D

but my stereo room gets neglected lately - i need more new music :D

i can only imagine what your theatre setup must be like :D

i once heard a really good setup - focal utopia all around - each with dedicated power amps (jeff rowland if i recall correctly) etc. it was about 200K - in the end fight scene from matrix you could not only hear WHERE the spent cartridge cases hit the floor - but also small pieces of debris from the impact of the bullets in the marble/slate walls - which scattered on the stone floor... - i mean you could hear as the debris fell on the floor and where it came to a standstill...

i will never forget this - that they go the lenght and even record all of this???

i had to settle for a set of b&w 700s for my surround system back then... still have them

It's all the actual room design and treatments once are at the top 80-95% with gear. Making a theater dub as impressive two channel is a struggle if the room is optimized for 7-12 or more multichannel surround or even atmos but it can be done withe careful planning. My room was designed from the ground up by Dennis Erskine plans. A 400amp service panel supplies the power needed for 145db+ levels at all three seating rows. Focal makes some nice cabinets but not high output which most theater junkies require for peak dynamics and even frequency response throughout the room from seat to seat.

Yea it will shake your eyes from any seat with ease. My mic isn't accurate enough to measure peak rms output but it's over 145db. The room doesn't have a single rattle from using glue and 10x the amount of screws during construction.

Just waiting for it to be released on BD as I don't go to public theaters anymore as its a let down.

For anyone that's interested in home theater and have been away from the scene for a while or are new in general check out JTR speakers, Seaton Sound, JBL's new M2 and Danley Sound Labs
