i have been looking into a hat for the outdoors, but i really know nothing about them. traditional looking felt is mainly what i am looking for, unless you have had really good expirience with somthing else. i dont care for the ones columbia makes, because of the materiel and the looks of them, although i am sure they perform well. i would be using it in the rain andd snow, so id like it to be nice and durable. REI has some, but, again, i dont know much about hats so i dont know what to look for. i am looking to spend at most $40. any recommendations or pictures or hat-knowlege in general would be good.
Thanks in advance!

I don't normally where a hat at all, but when I do I where a GI Boonie hat.

A little bit more than $40 will get you a Tilley hat; I have mine since 1992! Very well made hat!

The Tilley hats are serious outdoor gear.

I wear a Stetson straw hat in summer heat, and favor a Stetson buffalo felt hat in colder weather.

That said, I often depend on a Tilley hemp hat in wet and windy weather.

You won’t find better protection from the elements.

You cannot go wrong with a Tilley.

Cabelas gore-tex bonie hat sets you back around 20 bucks. I've been using them for a bit, not good for hard rain or a blizzard but under most circumstances it's nice. It's comfortable and light. When not in use i fold it up into a back pocket.

Tilley Hemp Hat! I find that they are more packable then the nylon versions and I like the slightly greater weight of them.

I wear just a baseball cap. In winter I wear a wool stocking hat over the ball cap.

Go with the Tilley!! matter afact..check out there shorts also,I've had my hat for almost 10 years and my shorts for 8 yrs, very light but durable!

The problem with Tilley or Outdoor Research or even booney hats is you end up looking like a member of "the wilderness nerd society". An Akubra looks grown-up and it's as effective as any of the artificial-ingredient hats mentioned.

Of course, my fedoras and packer hat will have to wait for cooler weather. I went out tonight with my "raful", a kind of Israeli booney. :)

I need a new hat, too... I usually wear a boonie hat, but I always have to push it up out of the way of my camera. And since that's the main reason I wear a hat; to shade my eyes while on a shoot, I need something a bit more rigid.

I'm going to have to look into those fedoras. I've wanted one ever since I was a little kid and saw Indiana Jones and then The Man From Snowy River for the first time.

I almost always just wear a baseball cap. Have tried a few other things, but always keep coming back to that. Been wearing one almost constantly all my life, so always have one handy. They work well, and I don't cry if I lose one or if it gets torn up. Do have a nice Stetson white straw hat that I wear a lot during summer fishing trips, that sun gets strong out on the boat.

:D :D :D :D

Funny....but true! Even still, I wear a Filson Packer hat when I intend on spending some hard core time in the outdoors. I have to admit it looks a little goofy...which is why I wear a ball cap until I get to the trailhead.
