outdoor hat?

I'm going to have to look into those fedoras. I've wanted one ever since I was a little kid and saw Indiana Jones and then The Man From Snowy River for the first time.

Check out VillagehatShop.com and Noggintops.com and MikeTheHatter.com for their wool felt crusher fedoras or outbacks. You can get one pretty cheap -- go to their sale section and see if they have something you like. Then you can try out the style probably for less than $30. The outbacks have a really big brim, which can be a nuisance sometimes. A regular fedora gives you good coverage from sun & rain, front and back, which a ball cap doesn't.

When up in the mountains, along the Snowy River, only an Akubra will do.

Alright, thanks! Yeah, I was grimacing a bit at the price on those Akubras over at David Morgan's shop, and he seems to have the best prices at $120-$135 (though I don't doubt for a second that they're worth every penny), but $30 I can handle!

Haha! Aye, Mr. Craig. ;)

Darn, now I'm pining for a stockwhip again...

Get a fedora and a leather jacket and you'll need the whip too .. join our "indiana jones nerd society" :D

I'd probably qualify for the Indy Nerd Society even without said paraphernalia. At least my overworked VHS tapes of the Indy trilogy would think so. ;)

Almost has Patterson's rhythm and everything. :)

"Where a horse's hoofs strike firelight from a flintstone every stride,
the man who holds his own is good enough."

The problem with Tilley or Outdoor Research or even booney hats is you end up looking like a member of "the wilderness nerd society". An Akubra looks grown-up and it's as effective as any of the artificial-ingredient hats mentioned.

Of course, my fedoras and packer hat will have to wait for cooler weather. I went out tonight with my "raful", a kind of Israeli booney. :)

Agreed:thumbup: Unfortunately most hats look bad IMO. Especially if you have great looking hair:D One of mine was very lightweight and packable but made me look like an Arab. A look which is frowned upon by Obama loving racist:D The other looks nerdy. I don't want to look like Niles, Frasier, or Ross from the show Friends while out in the field; or a tactical soldier of fortune wannabe in a Camo Boonie hat. I would check REI outfitters and look at something by North Face. They look good and do the job. You can also pick up a hat at a Cigar shop/store for men where they sell hats that look good while providing protection from the sun. I don't suggest a cowbow hat unless you have experience with horses, rodeo, etc. Otherwise you just look like a clown.

"And the Snowy River riders in the mountains make their home,
Where the river runs those giant hills between;
I have seen full many riders since I first commenced to roam,
But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen."

My all time favourite poem, knew much of it by heart once upon a time, a couple of hundred years ago!

Spent quite a bit of time up in the Snowies on horseback, way up in the hills camping, taking everything in on packhorses. I've ridden through the Snowy River and I've chased brumbies and roos through the Snow Gums.

Ahhhh... those were the days ....

Those were the days, my friend!
We thought they'd never end.
We'd sing and dance forever and a day.
We'd live the life we'd choose.
We'd fight and never lose.
For we were young and sure to have our way!

I kid you Esav, I see those "outfits" all the time when walking my dog at Griffith park in Hollywood (where Kramer was found by in the last episodes of Sienfield when he moved to LA). Near the Griffith observatory is where the "Hollywood Trail" starts and it takes you to a good view of the famous Hollywood sign. Every time I go I can count on seeing at least one "Indiana Jones/Laura Croft/Theodore Roosevelt" wannabe who is dressed as though ready for Safari. But I admit I to have gone on fishing trips dressed the same. I knew I looked nerdy I just couldn't admit it to myself. The clothes were a big part, but the hat sealed the deal. Even worse are the all Camo guys who don't even hunt. Or the Chuck Norris wannabe's in tactical black BDU's. It takes practice going into the woods without looking like a douche bag. I'm still working on it;)

You used to sing and dance dressed up in a frilly skirt?

Things have changed a lot since then I guess .....

That must have been one heck of a time. If I ever make it over to Oz, the Snowy River is on my not to be missed list. When I go, I'll be sure to wear the right hat! :D

Maybe unsurprisingly, The Man From Snowy River, Clancy of the Overflow, and Waltzing Matilda are Patterson's works that I am most familiar with. This is the spot right here: banjo

Esav: How odd, I was watching that very video just a few days ago. Robin Williams also does a somewhat macabre version of the song.

<attempted thread drift correction>

I have two Ultimate hats which I believe to be copies of the original Tilley hat. They both have held up well. I'm not so sure about "wilderness nerd"... although I have been told that I look like a potentially deranged version of Indiana Jones when I'm wearing mine.

those akubras are pretty cool, but a little expensive. i will probably try out the hat thing on a less expensive one first, the try out one of those. this is one i liked, found it on one of Esavs links:
thumbsup.php

yea, ill be joining the indiana jones club too.

A few items of trivia for you.

He grew up on Illalong Station which is just down the road a bit from my place and his early education was at Binalong, a village not far from mine.

Another of his poems, Conroy's Gap, is a place about 40 mins drive from my place. I used to drink in the same pub he did. :)

Go to YouTube. Search for "Those were the days". Stand back, there's a flood of different versions! :)

I don't know how to explain this to you ... it's like this, sometimes we post videos of people,
and they don't look like us. This one doesn't look like me either.
