outdoor hat?

The problem with Tilley or Outdoor Research or even booney hats is you end up looking like a member of "the wilderness nerd society".

Ain't that the truth. :D I've been wearing a Columbia bora bora boonie lately. It's light and comfortable in hot weather, but it's nerdy as hell and isn't getting any better with age. At least a Tilley will eventually develop some character if you wear it long enough. It may look like crap, but that's better than nerdy any day. Here's a T3 I wore until it fell apart.

Now that's a hat! :D

I'm going to try Tilley again. Maybe the hemp TH4. I'll take it out to the desert and stomp on it for awhile, then give it to Dingus to play with. After a few days it will be fit to wear in public. :p

Felt hats look great and are comfortable if it's not too hot. But you need something a little cooler in the desert. (JMHO)

Great thread guys.

How about a straw or Panama fedora? VillageHat has them in some real variety of cost and style.

They'd be a lot cooler than felt for sure, but, to me, that's like trading a "wilderness nerd" look for a "city guy fell off the train" look. Most models just look too fancy for trail use. But I'm no fashion consultant. You've already seen what I've been willing to wear in the desert. ;)

In the spring and fall or when rain is likely, I wear a gortex ball cap with a longer brim. (Not the really long brim for fisherman.) Other times, I have a Bass Pro baseball cap that has a longer brim. I wear perscription glasses and I absolutely hate to get my glasses wet in the rain. I have also use straw hats in the summer, but they don't do well if the weather is rainy. They are still too expensive to be considered disposable.

Boonie hats look nerdie and although I have one or two, I seldom wear them.

Some of you guys maybe look nerdy in your tilley hats, but I my MOTHER happens to tell me that I look quite dashing in mine !!!!!!

P.S. I also wear my socks at the proper man's length. None of the stupid little socklets that end at the top your shoe either!

Love the hat but I'd be danged uncomfortable in those socks.

I didn't think I was looking nerdy with my thrusty Tilley T3; do I ?

...maybe it's the white stuff on my face that I wear all the time that gives me a nerdy look...:D

Is this the Wilderness and Survival Skills Forum or did I stumble into the Fashion Forum.

Form follows function when it comes to the gear a carry a field.

I can’t believe you guys are worried about whether you look nerdy or dorky in the woods.

Then I hike I generally try to avoid other people, and when I do cross paths with some fellow travelers, my appearance is seldom a concern.

The hat I choose must protect me from the elements and stay on in windy weather.

The Tilley hats meet those requirements quite well.

PS – Does this knife make my butt look big?

True enough Big Mike and I think most of us are having a little fun with this. It is true that in Trinidad I went on this tour into a bird sanctuary and there was this cadre of retired, bird watchers all wearing brand spanking new tilley hats and identical safari outfits without a stain anywhere on their clothing. It was funny to watch, and I partly blended in except I was much dirtier.

Of course, one time in my adolescence I actually got lucky in the bush (and it was even with my own species and opposite gender) so you never know :)

I think the T3 is a good hat. It's adaptable and takes on the character of it's wearer with time. You look like you were born with that hat on.

Good choice kgd. Is that one of the new hemp models? I would wear long socks in the forest, but in the desert it's little socklets for me.

Its the Tilley TH-4 hat. I bought it in July as a replacement to the Nylamtium model. I liked the nylamtium for its waterproofness and lightness but in some respects it was a bit too light (I like to feel a hat on my head) and I was never fully enamoured with the feel and look of synthetics. The Hemp hat is has just the right weight without being hot in the least. It has a nice feel to the fabric that is very supple. I like how the hat crushes flat naturally making it really packable, whereas the nylon ones became creased on the sides when stored packed for any length of time. It survived a pretty good rainstorm in the jungle, the water just poored off the brim and my head stayed plenty dry.
