outdoor hat?

Well, I got my Jaxon crushable wool Aussie today, and... It's way too big. My trusted family member that I had measure my head was about an inch off, it seems. Luckily, it's a perfect fit for my dad, who I've been trying to talk into getting a hat anyway, as he's mostly bald and I worry about skin cancer (and shielding his eyes, as he's also blind with badly developing cataracts, but refuses to wear sunglasses). He says he'll wear it, and it looks great on him, so all's well! I'll order myself a small sometime in the next week or so.

I'll try and post a pic of him wearing the hat soon, if he'll cooperate.

Tilley hats will get you a complement when you wear it. Great for sunny So Cal, I do field work, brim does get in the way of camera, but still a great hat.

Rothco Boonie works for me... I got a small dome so a low profile is best.

I like how they can be folded up and packed small.

They keep all but the heaviest rain off.

Personally, I think they look pretty cool.

At the price, they are hard to beat!

I've got a small noggin, so I don't care for the excessive wide-brimmed hats. My Filson Packer has been my go to hat. I still use baseball caps and a couple cotton boonie hats, but the Filson is much more durable. I'd like to pick up a good wool crusher hat for this winter.

My momma always said I was special and my wife loves me regardless of what hat I'm wearing...who cares if I look like an Indiana Jones geek:D

ROCK6

Is that a maxpedition devildog? I'm looking for a good lumbar pack.

Tilley, they are the Kings of hats... There are quite a few Tilley-like hats around, but Tilley does really stands out from the rest. Well, I did myself a small research into hats before settling down with Tilley and came to conclusion that Tilley were very expensive, but excellent warranty meant money well spend - as people say, "I'm not a millionaire to buy cheap things". So far it travelled from Amazona to Central Asia and North Africa without any problems. Except my wife sports Tilley as well now, plus Tilley trousers, shirt...

Can't believe it. I was rumaging through my closet and found my old Tilly T3 that I thought was long gone. It was at the bottom of a stack of different colored & camo-patterned boonies that I wear for hunting. Here's a pic Karen took of me with the T3 at the Painted Desert in the early 90s:

The hat is stained a little but still wearable.

Excellent thread; any updates? I'm almost sold on the Tilley TH5 or TH4. I'd like to hear some long term updates on these...

I love my Filsons but must admit that in the heat of the summer I've been wearing a lighter Stetson...

I have the Burmah 1057KH - Canvas Drover - Khaki
It has a mesh band and a canvas top and brim
The brim is stiff and holds a very good shape
The brim is nice and wide for the sun

The canvas is 'waterproof' which means it does not absorb sweat
So I can rinse off with clean water at the end of a long hike when there is a lot of salt sweat on the brim
Comes clean

The stiff brim works well as a fan for fire starting lol

I am very pleased with the way it is holding up
I have seen them for $36, which is an excellent price for this hat
A stylish hat that looks good and is keepson looking good

I prefer close to the skull hats with ear and neck protection. I'm in these things for hours and hours crawling through brush with headphones on, so thin and light weight is important also. This is my second hat like this, the first, a Columbia lasted about 3-4 years. This hat also has fold over ventilation flaps on the top, right were you need it most. I grabbed this at Cabela's.

Barmah. :)

Agreed. That's what I paid for a cheap summer alternative to my Tilley T3. The "cheap" Barmah has been treated worse, cared for less, and used a hell of a lot more than my T3, and it's still going strong. The Tilley wore out after a few years of light use. Tilley replaced it for free, of course, but it still needs more care and attention, it seems.

I wore my Tilley all the time, until I got a Real Deal hat. Now it's my go-to. I also have my tried-and-true boonie, for when I need a hat that I can shove into a pack and not worry about it.

Having had just a wee bit of negative feedback on my use of boonie hats as street wear, I finally broke down and got a Tilley TH5, and took it on its shakedown cruise over the weekend. She Who Matters said that it looked good on me... which I might have thought was just a nice way of saying it is better than a boonie, but she is seriously considering getting one for herself. In any event, while it may suffer from the "all brimmed hats look goofy" curse, the TH5 apparently makes me less of a public spectacle than before.

The hat is nicely constructed and I will say that it did okay for sunny and mid-80s (F) combined with high relative humidity; for a while, I even got to use the "back of the head" strap to keep it from blowing off my head… and I didn't think I'd ever use that feature.
