outdoor hat?

Not sure how many seasons you deal with ( friends with extensive experience at Fort Sill claimed 5 seasons of mudd - they must of exaggerated?). Have had a Akubra for better than 40 years - basically it's my warm -wet weather hat , Tilley is simply great hot weather sun shield hat - these work way better than you'd imagine -'nother one of those things you've got to use to appreciate. About 5 years back I poped for a Russian style sheepskin winter hat (around $125.00) - for really cold weather this gets laughs and then a sorta wistful look followed by a comment along the lines of "that looks warm?" to which I smilingly reply "yup".Don't know why I've spent decades of Wisconsin winters without one - just too dumb to come out of the cold." My work vehicle always have a boonie and a watch cap along with my hard hat - I generally pay around $2 for these at gun shows - hell of a lot of utility for very few bucks - don't last forever - but ya ain't makin payments on 'em either. I really do wish I lived somewhere where one hat would do it!

that looks like a really good bargain!

Yup! Can't wait for it to get here! I just watched The Man From Snowy River for the umpteenth time the other night...

I don't know if I'm the only one to notice this but I think I have seen you before.

Haha! I see it too. :D

The LTM6 AIRFLO® Hat

I needed something durable and cool to help keep the sun off my head here in TX. I've been using various other types of headgear, but all of them were just a compromise. I'm looking forward to getting it!

Andy

I wore this hat all over S.E. Asia and the South Pacific for seven years. Best hat I ever had! Cooler in hot weather, didn't blow off in the winds, kept me dry during monsoons, and after all those years, still looked brand new! Nothing beats a Tilley.

Hi Guys,

Kismet at post 115 has a photo of a hat I had for years-a no name ventilation hat. I finally bought a Tilley LTM6 Airflo and it is much better. I like how light it is.

In the winter I have wool felt crushable hat I got at Wal-Mart years ago. I took off the cheap head band and replaced it with braided 550 cord. It is very comfortable. I think it is better than more expensive felt hats I have tried.

I keep an emergency hat in my Camel-Bak Ambush pack that is a Columbia ball cap that has a French Foreign Legion look to it with the material that drops off of the back. It definitely qualifies for the Wilderness Nerd Society, but it keeps the sun off of my neck.

I have an Akubra, but it is too hot to wear in South Central Texas most days. I also have a Stetson straw hat, but it does not fit the hiking culture to use it on hiking trails. It does do a good job keeping the sun off in the summers.

I use a boonie when I go bow hunting. The smaller brim helps to keep it from getting knocked of of my head when I am in the woods.

When I was in the Army we used BDU caps or helmets all the time. Of course, the caps were more popular than helmets. It is possible to wear a ball cap for protection, but I think that a full brim hat is better.

I think the best all around hat is the Tilley. It is light weight, durable, and keeps my head cool.

My secret for getting around the nerd look is that I use the hat I need for the hike, then when I get back to the car I take it off and replace it with a normal ball cap. That way when I stop at the gas station I can hide the matted "hat head" hair as well as look semi-normal with the ball cap.

You can get a Brazilian Tarp hat for 30 smackers.

But it does make you look a lil nerdy, Thats me on the right.

And I did get myself a truck tarp hat! Thanks Tony!

It just arrived yesterday in fact. The thing looks bomb-proof and I'm sure will be the hat that outlives them all! (much to my wife's dismay :p)

She may not like my hat much, but she sure does like her truck tarp purse...go figure! -Matt-

Thats cool man, I didn't know they made purses.

Yeah once you shape the hat the way you like it, its great.

There's a link near the top of the home page that takes you to a page where they have a purse, backpacks, shoulder bags, totes etc. I just wish I had a bit more money, I like their backpacks and shoulder bag. If the purse is any indication of what the other bags are like...heavy duty stuff!

Yeah, the hat is gonna take a bit of time and work to get it where I want it, but it's definitely good to go! -Matt-

I really like the Filson Packer,or if it is really wet, the Outdoor Research Seattle sombrero. A good all around choice is a G.I. "boonie"that has been waterproofed works well for me.

Shouldn't that be a question for the Wilderness Pussy thread?

No, it's actually a partially completed Willow fish trap.

Doc

actually Doc the reason i asked is some where i seen a beaver trap made by the cree or montangais very similar to your willow trap. i thought wow there's a beaver trap. it's built very similar to your trap. it is set in a runway under the water. the beaver swims into it and drowns before it can get out.

That's interesting. If you come across it again, be sure and post it. I don't know why, but I get the feeling you're a fellow Canuck?

Doc

Doc, i get mistaken for being canadian quite often especially when traveling in the southern u.s. i end most every thing i say with eh. i live about an hour from soo canada. i find the cree and montangais interesting due to their terrain being similar to mine. also one of my favorite small games rifles is a cooey model 60.:)

Here's me in my Watership Hat Companie "Vineyard Haven". I've also recently bought a Tilley, and am eyeing a Filson insulated packer as winter is rapidly approaching the Great White North.
