Overall Best Mid Size Busse

I would agree that it depends on the person, hand size, uses, and too many other varriables to list.

The straight handled badger attack (thanks for letting me try that one out mulder) does indeed melt into your hand!

But I don't consider that a "mid sized" knife. It is in the small to mid.

I sure do love my CABS! In the small category!

The BossJack is going to be pretty tough to beat! I like the feel in hand of the Boss Jace even more than the original Jacks!

For mid sised all arrounder I have to vote SarQ. Taller blade. Perfect thickness. Rounded exposed tang. Works great in food prep. Can chop better for its size than I ever expected! As much as I want to grab a boss jack, I could not make my self sell the SarQ! (Or the cabs, or bad, or keep my self from buying the Muck LE).

Best mid sized Military/Survival knife might be the Team Gemini. This thing is a beast. Finger guard really works. Pommel doesn't have a pointy skull crusher so you can employ a two hand push stab grip. Thick and heavy enough for all that Busse chopping and batoning in a 7&3/4 inch knife you can easily hang off your belt.

This one.

I classify my blade sizes as follows:
S = under 5"
M = 5-7"
L = 7-9"
XL = over 9"

That being said, I pick the following 3 from my collection as my best midsized INFI in this order.
SAR 6
SARsquatch
Skinny ASH

I just recently acquired a Camp Tramp and am very impressed, which now makes me very curious about the Basic 7. :p

For me it is still the BATAC and the new BJLE I just received. I have 2 hands so I'm not picking one knife.;)

I see my Basic 5 as my "small knife" and my Basic 9 as my "mid size" .... the OAL on the Basic 9 is the same as my NMSFNO and FSH but it weighs less than my SFNO LE .... I have a Camp Tramp in the 7 inch range which I like but prefer the extra chopping ability on the Basic 9.

Large to me would be my BWM LE and Basic 11 and Extra Large my NMFBM and Killa Zilla's.

In the small and mid size categories the light weight of the "Basic" series plus the comfort of the Res C handle and the brilliant ASM edges just makes them the "best choices" for me ....

My first Busse was a satin ASH-1 .32" and I loved (and still love) it. I picked up an ASH-1 Skinny and it's a great knife as well but I'm a big satin fan which led me to the ASH-1 LE. I'm surprised this blade isn't getting more love here as I think it's truly a great mid size user and gets my nod as favorite. I've really enjoyed my SAR-6 as well and it's gotten a lot of use but handle not quite as comfortable as the ASH's (perhaps if i could throw some magnum handles on it... :))

SFNO also a great mid size. Just haven't had the time yet to get out and really bang it around in the field. NMSFNO is a beautiful knife. Love it. However, whether accurate assessment or not I put this one outside of mid sized.

@Houndstooth: that is *the* one(for me)...what is it? and what are the specs?...can it be found with magnum scales and zero convex?

I agree FredHoward -- ASH-1 LE is THE mid-sized Busse. :thumbup:

Maybe it gets mentioned less because there were two other ASH-1 knives that are more likely to end up as users -- the CG and Skinny. How many of us have actually used our ASH-1 LEs? I hope a lot but bet there are some safe queens, including mine.

SFNO always comes up !!

Not too keen on saber grinds which is why I traded mine a few years back

Reading these responses has made up my mind for me. It was close between my NMSNFO and my Squatch. But, for "mid sized" I will go with the squatch. The tall blade, thin stock, great handle, and for once a useable pommel. What do I EVER need a skull crusher for anyway? The Squatch is one of the highly underrated Busse's out there. I understand why the SS and shiva are unloved but the squatch should be revered. And yes, I will put it up against a SNFO overall with the nod to the SNFO in the looks category, yes the SNFO is darn near perfect there. But for use the squatch is the overall better. There I said it and now I feel better.

I agree, the Sarsquatch Comp is pretty tough to beat in the outdoor chopper/all around category, although the SAR 6 is very close.

With all respect to the SARs, the handle never worked for me -- much prefer the Fusion or TAC handles. Never had a Squatch either, but those that do really like them.

DSF.

-It's streamlined compared to every other midsized knife int he busse catalogue
-Because it's handle isn't as tall as other models, it maintains a more blade heavy balance without increasing weight
-It has the length of larger busses but takes up a significantly smaller footprint
-The height of the blade can make it feel more stable while chopping and cutting, where taller blades feel like the way to shift back and forth more
-CHEAP, especially compared to some of the more sought after models like the sfnole
-The format, long relatively no-tall blade, gives a better feeling while chopping compared to it's larger counterparts like the nmsfno. One feels like a heavy chunk of steal in your hand doing what you'd expect, the other feels like your getting way more chopping power then seems appropriate for such a small package.

The one and only drawback I can see on it is that it's not choiless. For edc 'in all environments including city' I'd go with the choiless boss jack, because as great as the dsf is it's a little long for easy concealed carry.

My size-chart looks pretty similar:

S - 3 - 5"
M - 5 - 7" (7.01", .03", .05", .75"...)
L - 8 - 10.5"
XL - 10.75 - 12.75"
XXL 12.75"+

ZTSJ, BJ- or any Satin Jack (for the most part) - or -
