overrated knives

I will second what has been said above that these threads are nothing but trouble. I will also say that I find that most people will try to validate their own purchases and financial means by dismissing knives that are out of their price range.

I owned a Blur and I thought it was a good knife and a great value for the money. I wasn't so keen on the recurve blade or the aluminum scales so I eventually sold mine.

I think the most overrated is the Sebenza. I find the styling to be a bit blah and the price to be high but that is strictly my opinion. I don't doubt that it is a very quality product and if people like it then that is great for them.

I think the Benchmade 710 is overrated but that is partly my dislike for recurve blades and partly because I think it is a bit thin.

Obviously you've never owned a Sebenza.

I was hopeful that this thread would be experience based and not just opinion and preference based. I feel like that isn't going to happen. Lesson learned.

You're lucky it's not worse. If you study your question, you will see you are not asking about experience. You could have asked "which of your knives have failed" or some such to get experience.

Asking about ratings is asking for opinion.

This should be fun to watch.

Sebenza's are overrated.

Haha, all I can say to that is, I agree. Many people love em, but they just aren't all that impressive to me. Whatever floats your boat though. And yes I do own some Sebenzas, the small ones are nice, but still seem overpriced to me. I don't care for the large ones at all, just not my cup o' tea.

So, you're speaking from "unbiased experience", but the rest of us from "biased opinion and preference"?

LOL

so far I have not found any overrated knife, maybe because I have been able to restrict myself under $250 per knife.

Cold Steel. (Prepares flame suit) Nothing will get me to like Cold Steel. 99% of their product line is made overseas of low-end materials, which is more than even than the much-insulted Gerber. Cold Steel also loses me with their silly bravado, pig-chopping antics, absurdly over-sized blade shapes/designs, and a tendency to sell products that might get the average citizen locked in jail overnight for weapons possession.

Actually I thought your post was based on your experience and not just opinion or preference, but I didn't see that in many of the other posts on this thread. That being said this will be my last post in this thread as I wasn't trying to start a thread where I had to defend my personal experience with a knife.

Spoken like a true douche bag, who's never owned a Cold Steel product. Personally, I like getting twice the knife for half the money. Their newly upgraded folders are superb and the Tri-Ad lock is peerless.

So I guess CTS XHP, CPM 3V, CPM S35VN, and CPM 20CV are "low-end materials"

You know what's overrated? Your biased and uninformed opinion. Hate on, my friend. Hate on.

OP, this is why these get locked. Some people have their personal identities wrapped up in consumer goods and take disparaging remarks about those products as attacks on their personal character and then the insults start up.

When copious heaps of bullshit are spewed from sphincter of the uninformed, someone needs to point out it's not a chocolate fondue fountain.

Recurves, Sebenzas and Busses are overrated.

Chris Reeve one-piece knives are overrated, and I really did try to like my Jereboam for six years...

But the most overrated knife feature of them all is without a doubt the convex edge... All knives with convex edges are overrated, and the full convex ones are even more overrated.

I imagine this thread will get some people fired up but I thought it might be an interesting topic. In your experience what is the most overrated knife? I will go first and say the kershaw blur. I know lots of people devote there entire collection to this single knife but for me this knife has one horrible flaw. After seeing a video discussing the extremely weak lock on these knives I put mine to the test and found that my lock would fail with minimal pressure to the spine of the blade. For me the most overrated knife is the kershaw blur. What's yours?

I dunno, I don't consider the BLUR overrated, personally. Especially the $40 Sandvic versions. Great affordable carry knives. Maybe if you have a $90 S30V one - I have a lot of versions. Nowadays I'd probably just get a cheaper Camber, but the Blur is still great IMHO. They all seem the same to me as far as fit and finish. That's not easy to do under $100 and usually under $60.

I'd be more likely to nominate some $150+ Chinese made knife or some of the sub $30 Chinese Kershaws that can be real POS's with crappy steel too.

If you guys could just keep the name calling outta your post, then we shouldn't have a problem discussing a topic like this.

Personally, I think Cold Steel make a great knife for the price. I've never had to return one for the lock bar not holding up (uhmmm...ZT). And, I can hand sharpen just about any of their steels to a nice, workable sharp edge. Now, let's look at a comparative knife at Emerson. Same basic materials, and similar design. Yeah, Emerson has the pocket catch and the unique grind but, in general, your getting just about the same knife. I've had them both and I honestly think of them as very similar knives. However, the Emerson blades typically cost twice as much as the Cold Steel knives. So, overall, for me, I just can't validate spending the extra dough on an Emerson and ultimately feel like it's an extremely overrated brand for the price to value ratio.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I think ZT is overrated. Most of their designs are tacky and they can't seem to make anything sleek or lightweight. Just my opinion, and what the hell do I know anyway?

Next time, someone start a "knives you can't seem to love" I wouldn't quite say the griptilian is overrated but for my big hands it's uncomfortable as heck.
