Owning the kills initiative: October challenge

Okay, I'm in. I read somewhere that once you announce your intent to do something, you're more likely to actually do it. Something about the power of public shame...

Do we need to post pics every day? Or just once in a while to show improvement?

(i'm in BTW:D)

I done my first one today between mowing and cooking dinner. Plan on posting it at 12:01am, just to be an ass. :D Moose

I made 2 tonight between mowing and dinner. These are from a Maple tree I got in the yard. My girls were kind enough to pick up sticks before I mowed. My support for the first one broke about 3" back, and would up short. I made it work. Trigger on the first one is LIGHT, the second a little heavy, all has to do with the angle I guess. Moose

I went big, and went tiny! Knew I could do a normal sized one but want to see if I could take one twig and make this one! SAK for size referance. Maybe a good mouse trap?? That piece of glass is acutally pretty heavy.

Keep up the good work.

Come on people! You don't have to post every day. How about just try one, to get the ball rolling??

Heres another for just cause, the stick in the background was there from son setting it off repeatedly, looks like its part of trap, but its not.

Nice traps guys.... keep up the good work.... If no one else joins in at least we'll be awesome at fig. 4's LOL......I think Novembers challenge might gain a little more inertia.. But heck today is only October 1st.

Here's mine. It took some fixing and fiddling, but I got it to work. :)

I made the trigger stick way too short, so here's my field expedient extension.

I'm not sure if this will work, but here's a video of the trap being sprung. As you can see it takes a bit of force to spring. Lessons were learned!

Yeah, mine have either been too light, or too heavy. Only one out of the last 5 has been "just right" in my opinion. But hey, that what we are doing here, right? By Halloween, we should be some fig 4 experts. Thanks again RR, this is gonna be cool. Moose

ETA Good extension, way to think outside the trap.

Good stuff..Nice one JG...Just imagine how proficient you'llbe after making or setting 20 or 30 of these...

i just attempted my first one while sitting here @ work & reading this thread.
im not sure its gonna work

**EDIT
i was right
i cut the horizontal piece in the wrong place.
the angled piece that holds up the deadfall is not able to "lock" into the notch

Ok, I will be traveling tomorrow, so I want to get up on my next one.

Yep, toothpicks, done it with a Becker BK2. The red you see isn't my blood , its dye from my leatherwork. See, you don't have to be outdoors to get in on it.

Hardest part was setting the trap, I didn't have enough weight to force the lock in, so, remember, you need 5x the weight of whatever you hope to catch in order to make a humane kill.;) Moose
