My first two are both with cattail fluff. The stuff works, especially if you use a huge pile! :D

I ended up making about ten fires with cattail fluff, it was so fun.

I even made a mini-torch.

Next go at it, simple Cedar branch, very very dry and took off well with very little prep

Then I tried making it finer and I have to say it worked much better when I left it alone, I think it wasn't getting enough air this way, but none the less it still started.

#2 Milkweed Pod fluff (note it was pouring rain when I did this)

Its been a wet, cold day here in East Tenn, so I dusted off my RC4 and headed outside while the girls were playing. First one is some kinda vine I found dead hanging in the trees, the other is a couple of plucks from a fir tree my brother planted when he was 6. Shavings and rolled up balls of fir needles. Thanks RR, this is fun. Moose

I favor getting a ferro rod blank and putting a handle on it myself, I can get a larger rod and sweeter handle for less money!

Here's the one I made up with a blank from Bens Backwoods, and the knife is a modded Old Hickory.

Is that a spent shell casing for the lanyard hole? very cool either way

Tinder #4: Saw dust from a maple branch.

I got this tip from RR and Payette Rucker in the recent SAK thread.

I simply sawed a small branch until I had this pile:

It didn't light up as easily as I expected. The reason was lack of airflow. That problem easily corrected by fluffing things up bit.

I'm not sure what this stuff is called, but you find it next to water on the top of 7' stalks. (Yeah, my plant ID skills are pretty bad:thumbdn:)

This stuff burns so fast that you actually have to compress it a little to get a flame that does more than flash across the top.

I have not dropped out. I actually have four more tinders already done but I don't have the pics uploaded yet. I have been building a bow this weekend and it has taken longer than expected. I'm only posting this as an incentive to make myself post the pics once they are all uploaded.
There, I've said it. Now I have no excuse. Will post pics tomorrow.

#5 Grass seed pods - these grow in the field next to my house
