and hemlock sap.. This takes A LONG Time to get with a ferro (round 30 sparks) but even a littel dab will bun in excess of 5 minutes.. so once you get it you;ve got fire almost regardless of weather

More to come

Here is tinder 5.
I have 6-10 coming tonight as soon as my slow computer cooperates.

Tinder 5- cattail

I'll bite:

#1 - Resin saturated conifer shaved into fine "Duff" - This was actually used to light my wood stove for the day

#2 - Sagebrush bark in a traditional tinder bundle - Sparks don't always catch in the center of the bundle!

Tinder 7- LEAVES OF CAT TAIL- I was totally surprised by what happened at the end of the video! Who would have thought that a single cattail leaf, lit with a doans, could make a coal that burned strong for nearly five minutes!

Tinder 9- Red Oak scrapings
This one is the most effective tinder I have used so far for actually starting a fire. Easy to light, burns hot.

#7 Pine Cone:

The key here is to "melt" the pine sap - you are actually lighting the sap:

#8 Pine Needles:

It took a few strikes but burned well:

I thought that I would try a tinder that I was surrounded by growing up. Dry Sage flowers.
Tinder #4

I've never tried burning this before, and I quickly found out why. Despite burning well, it stinks! In an emergency I don't think that I would care.

i know im late...but i reckon i know exactly where i fit it in...
im a failure

i reevaluated quite a few things...i believe we should make it easy..then worry about the things we ought to be able to do...

later is better

Fall/winter is a great time to do this since many seeds are dead and fluffy!

It's hard to make fire and take pics, but here's my next four attempts.

#5 and #6, milkweed seedpod fluff. Even more of a flash tinder than cattail fluff. Very brief flame.

#7 and #8, Queen Anne's Lace. This stuff is great.

Except for the wind, rain and wet snow! :)

This has been a very warm fall for us up here on Long Island but the past 2 weeks have been a rude awakening on some days.

But yes it’s been fun and I keep grabbing handfuls of dry “stuff” and try to light them up.
