I love the looks of this blade, but can you tell me why the handle shape? Is there a purpose, or just what you wanted to do at the time? It looks nice, just that I've never seen a handle like that.
The name came from the width, since it is well beyond the traditional %20 percent of length.
I just stuck a little bowie into my thigh...I'm on a bandaid break...back to bowies .
Redsnake, I've been using this handle design for a while now (or a slight variation). The only thing I'm doing differently is sculpting the rear of the handle. I like the neutral feel in the heel of my hand...but I also like a non sculpted handle . Handle shapes are so personal, what feels great to one person might feel terrible to someone else. If you're ever in the area you're welcome to stop by and pick a few up .
I've handled Matt's knives with that sort of handle and it feels really good in my hand. I think on canvas micarta the sculpt ends up looking sort of bad because the mesh grain of the micarta creates patterns in the sculpt that don't flow well with the handle. It makes the scooped out back of the handle look rough and unfinished. If the handle was made of a more random pattern, like from fancy wood, it will look as good as it feels.
Maybe Matt can go to someone's house, and use their buffer? For the love of all that is holy, all that knife needs is 2 minutes on a 1750 rpm buffer with some green compound!
I actually like the way micarta looks sculpted, it reminds me of scrolled oak. I happily admit that I would rather use wood on a bowie, but the collector wanted micarta. What you order is what you get , sometimes .
Mr. Garsson, it will be a cold day in hell before a buffer is in my shop . Besides, the handle is canvas, no amount of buffing will hide the layers.
Hang on for a few days, I've got plenty of non micarta handles in the works .
