Awesome piece Matt!! I like every inch of it.

Don't listen to Garsson about the buffer!! Keep on hand sanding as it is the ONLY way to get a fine finish. Buff only after sanding to 2000 grit ;)

AFAIK, 800 grit is about as far as you can get with Micarta before you clog up the sandpaper, and I really don't care for wet-sanding Micarta at all, it turns into paste very quickly.

I see a Harbor Freight delivery vehicle pulling up to your new house very soon, Matt, and he will be bringing a lovingly crafted, Made-in-China buffer. You can keep it outside if you want to.:D

They just keep getting better and better Matt, great proportions and visual balance on this one, the Hamon is stunning. I quite like the micarta ..... but only on other peoples knives;)

Cheers,

Stephen

Very nice Matt!

The wood or ivory over micarta is always going to be mentioned with a piece like this... that's a given. But I honestly don't get the hatred for the handle itself... I like it!

I'm with Bailey... my buffer is my least used tool in my shop. I do NOT agree with STeven on the part about micarta... you can sand micarta as fine as you want. My favorite finish on it is hand sanded to 1500, buffed VERY lightly, and then gone over with 0000 steel wool.

Ugh, off to work

:D

I'm with the "like it" crowd, too.

Heck, you could have scotchbrighted the blade, saved a bunch of hours, and sold it as "tactical" for more money:)

I even like the guard, assuming the Micarta handle means someone's goint to use this one.

John, this bowie and one very similar are going to Thailand. Both pieces will be thoroughly flogged. The other piece also has a somewhat controversial handle, but the hamon is bitchin ;).

Just to push everyone's buttons ;), if I had a blasting cabinet I would blast all micarta handles. I like the textured feel of coarsely finished micarta; it provides a positive grip and feels a little soft. Polished micarta, on a big knife at least, is a liability; it's like hanging on to an ice cube.

Is your family aware of your gradual drift into mental retardation?:D

Just make sure you get a buffer before you buy a blasting cabinet.;)

As far as Wheeler goes, since you spent like 3 months building Joss's Micarta handled utility knife, exactly how much LONGER IS it going to be before I get a) a return phone call, b) my dagger????;)

I've been drifting for almost 26 years.

The only addition I'm willing to make to the shop is a 2hp variable speed AC motor for my KMG. I'll take a pic of my "shop" this afternoon.

As promised...shop pics. I'm ready to get laughed out of here.

First up is a shot of the entire shop room. The lighting in all the photos is off and seems somewhat dark. I've got the room rigged like a tanning salon.

In this photo you'll see two exquisitely crafted benches. The old world craftsmen at Lowes expertly cut the lumber to the exacting tolerance of .75" I couldn't figure out why everything was leaning to one side...:).

Here's my sanding station and a small vice.

Number 1 and a couple various pieces in the works.

Next up is the world's worst milling machine. Harbor Freight mini mill, it's made in China and that makes me sad ;).

Now, here's the world's GREATEST disk sander. Beaumont Metal Works.

Here's my grinder. KMG with a 1.5 HP ac motor.

A mixed bag here. Disks, platens, a wheel, a saw, sandpaper, drill bits, and end mills.

And finally, a shelf full of mostly trash ;).

I didn't take a photo of my wood collection, which is actually pretty impressive, my forge and anvil, or my photo set up. Maybe next time...

Youre lucky you better knives than benches, haha! Good to see shop pics. I just bought a house and havent ground anything in a month and im just now getting my basement empty enough to set up my shop.

BTW im with you on the buffer. The only thing I buff is wood and maybe nickel silver, and only VERY lightly. Buffing metal all youre doing is rounding out scratches...i prefer a sharply cut fine finish.

Not only do you make a very clean knife; that's one clean room too. Your mama taught you well:D

I was wondering why things looked so tidy. Then it hit me...No Belts. where are the handful of new belts along with the wheelbarrow full of used up belts that you will find a use for...some day?
