Para 2 Maxamet

It wasn't that it didn't come sharp, but not hair popping like a PM2 should be.

More pics please...your handles always look good. Thanks BKH. I'm gonna be picking one of these up soon I hope...already have flytanium scales waiting that I think will look good with the stonewash.

I must not have been paying attention, I didn't realize these were stonewashed 'til I opened mine. Very pleasant surprise for me, looks very nice. Kinda thinking I might need to do something about that shiny clip, though.

so whos used theirs? what materials did ya cut and how did it do? thanks.

Also interested in your sharpening experiences; especially if you re-profile the bevel.
What kind of angles are you using, what grit(s) are finishing at etc.

Would appreciate your personal input (already checked out YouTube vids).

Thx in advance

Got mine out of the box and gave it a work out saturday, and I have to say I'm quite pleased with this steel. So far I don't like it better than M390 (for the para 2) but I like it just as much, for different reasons. I broke down a few cardboard boxes, the edge didn't really seem to care too much. Still lazer sharp. Then I decided that as a fun test I'd cut all the way through a pine log (from our christmas tree.) It was about 5 inches diameter. I was pleased with the toughness, I did get a small chip (sorry no pics) probably a 16th of an inch wide and a 32nd deep. That's because I made a few pretty abusive side to side movements, sticking the knife into the wood and then prying sideways with the bevel. (I did this to test it mostly) It did fine with a little pressure, but when it chirped I heard an audible click.

After this the knife had no problem slicing printer or receipt paper, struggled a little bit but could still make push cuts, and was starting to loose the ability to do s cuts. The dulling seemed to be blunting from me putting lots of pressure into hard wood. Sharpening was interesting. It seemed to bite into the diamonds better than S110V, but as I did visual checks for stock removal, it was slower than S110V, kind of interesting, just the way I felt it. I gave up trying to get the chip out eventually. Maxamet gets a little bit of a burr if that's the way you sharpen, but it's a PAIN and a half to remove. Strops did the best. BTW factory edge angle was about 16dps. I was happy with that so I matched that edge.

We'll see how my edge does compared to the factory. I'm running the standard KME 1500 grit. I havn't seen anything crazy like the edge falling off during sharpening, or excessive chipping. Only chips I have gotten have been something that would chip s35vn or similar.

decided i needed one. found a dealer with one in stock.

hows maxamet been holding up on the pm2s? ive seen other knives having some chipping issues. anyone seen this yet on the pm2? thanks.

I have chipped mine, but nothing that wouldnt have chipped s30. No microchipping at all in my experience.
yes Sir. your post on feedback of your results using it, was great. appreciated it. wondering if anyone is actually using theres or just holding it for the colletion.

I have one on the way, but won't be allowed to see it until Christmas. It will be a user, as it will be my first PM2 and I've got no real plans of buying multiples at the moment.

My pleasure. :D

I've used mine, but not a ton. The problem is I don't carry it exclusively. Still, I have encountered no chipping whatsoever.

Using. Not too much yet, but will update with anything interesting.

Got frustrated with mine, so I temporarily retired it, until I cool off.

Out of my dozen or so Spydercos, only two came in not very sharp. This was one of them.

No problem. Touched it up, got it to where it was good. It chipped later during use. Decided to re-profile it. During the process, got another chip; bigger than the original one sustained during use. This has never happened to me in my many sharpening sessions with any other knife.

I was excited about the steel on my favorite model. But I am about to give up on it. Use it as a beater perhaps...

Any updates after a week or so of use? BHQ was sold out so I picked up some S110V to use in a FrankenMillie until after the holidays.

Well that sucks. Mine came in very sharp. I have been using it and have had no problems so far (knock on wood :)).

May I ask what exactly you were doing both times it chipped? What angle did you sharpen at? I think Jim Ankerson said that he had chipping on Maxamet when he took the angle down a little from factory. What about sending it back to Spyderco as potentially defective?

some more info for you. Apostle P and Big brown bear have a few videos on sharpening this. thread below.

Remember when zdp189 had these issues for a few folks. Believe it has to do with technique and the type of abrasives. But yet to be determined.

Spyderco will sharpen it for you or you can do a one time replacement if they give you the option.

Note that all these hardness testers are calibrated differently so while this one says 74hrc, spydercos may say 68hrc.
