Paracord Baldric

Awesome Guys!!

Great slings  I made a survival bracelet using the same method Brian, and have been really tempted to make a sling too - just need some more paracord before I can go for it :grumpy:

Can I ask you guys to show the knives you have in your set ups, and name them - It is really cool to see their proportion with a full camera shot

Thanks

I have one included in the passaround I am doing right now. Like Brian said 50-60 feet of cord and a couple hours of your time.
That is a nice one, tight wrap...looks good:thumbup:

Hey Brian, nice, clean job. I know this as the Bosun's braid and learned it when learning to net. I've used it on the handles of net bags.

A couple of thoughts: for me, I want the cord to unravel easily and agree that the usual 'Daisy Chain' leaves a little to be desired from an esthetic view point, so how about the Poser Braid?

I just did this quickly with a couple of different coloured pieces of 550 I was using for a picture in my Cheat Sheets thread. There's a Zippo included to help give it a size perspective.

Here it is in just one colour as a knife lanyard:

The other thing is I wondered if you are right or left-handed? I'm assuming right-handed from the picture. I like wearing my knife on my left side, so if I draw it I grab the sheath with my left hand and withdraw the knife with my right. When I'm not using it, I push it around behind me. Works well for me. From the picture, it looks like Jeff does, as well.

Like you, I hate anything around my neck, although I might make an exception for Halle Berry.

Just my 2 cents and please don't think it is a criticism, your work is impeccable.

There's a new knot to try! I like that one. The one like Brian made ("Bosun's knot?") is stiff and stays behind me when I want it to be out of the way and it doesn't "sway in the breeze" as I try to grab the bottom of the sheath with my left hand. Herniated disc in the neck makes even a very light "necker" a,... well, pain in the neck.:p Literally! I just got a special, very nicely made neck sheath from Mtnfolk that goes with the knife in my avatar for a VERY light necker setup. We'll see how that goes.

As for the pic request:

BRKT Canadian Special - a boring knife which will do anything I need a knife for. A scary reminder that I really don't "need" all the knives I have.

I uses something similar though not as fancy it ends up being about 30 ft of paracord in a simple 3 strand braid. I have a carabiner attatched to both ends so I can readily switch out what I carry on it..Usually its a canteen, Fak, or machete..I only use it when I'm working with a large tool (giggity) or on the move..as when I'm just around camp or working on skill I wear a mora on 550 around my neck

Hey Doc,

Nice pictures and nice knots. I have something new to try now too. Good thing I have lots of paracord laying around :D

I agree that the unraveling quickly is a big plus. I am quite sure that I am just going to end up with multiples, because I really like them all.

The other thing is I wondered if you are right or left-handed? I'm assuming right-handed from the picture. I like wearing my knife on my left side, so if I draw it I grab the sheath with my left hand and withdraw the knife with my right.

Even though using one of these is fairly new to me, I have come to the conclusion that I like it on my other side as well. So, I really don't know why I have it on this side in my picture :D

My only defense is that I wasn't going to take a picture of it "on" but couldn't get a good overall shot with it off. So it was a hurry and "hey Brendan, come over here and take a picture for me" sort of thing :D

Can I ask you guys to show the knives you have in your set ups, and name them - It is really cool to see their proportion with a full camera shot

Thanks

My first 3 photos is using the Bark River Fox River, old school one that has the loop on the top of the sheath.

My next picture, later in the thread, is with the Breeden 4" Pathfinder.

Just thought I'd post a link to a small tutorial on the Cobra stitch for those who were wondering how to do this, step by step. In the tutorial he's making a bracelet but the same concept applies for the baldric, just more cord needed.

http://files.bns-code.org/550_cord_bracelet.pdf

This is one continuous piece of paracord, but if you wanted, you could use two or three separate strands for the core rather than looping up one piece. Then you'd have quick access to a useable length without cutting or unraveling(by just pulling out one of the center peices of the weave), and your baldric would still be functional, just a little thinner. Haven't made a baldric using this, but I do wear a similar bracelet and I've been thinking about making a hatband for my boonie hat, hope these pictures help folks. It's a pretty simple process.

P.S. In tying my bracelet I came up with a time saver that keeps the center taught and level and allowing you to speed up the process. By anchoring the first loop or ends to a solid base(I used my bed frame :p )using a carabiner or smaller piece of wire/rope and then attaching the other end to say your belt or belt loop with a carabiner/s-biner, you can adjust the tension of the rope by moving forward or backward.
Came in real handy for me in keeping all the strands oriented and keeping the knots tight and symmetrical.

I've tried the baldric for the last year or so and REALLY like it. I wasn't too fond of the paracord and wanted the option of using it as a belt.... this is what I came up with....

1" wide leather belt with brass buckle, (2) 1.5" ID brass rings held together by copper rivets.

Worn as a Baldric... (fuzzy pic :o )

When worn as a belt, the rings allow it to swivel straight...

When worn as a baldric, the rings allow it to swivel on an angle to fit the contours of your body...

The knife and canteen are each held on with heavy duty snap loops... (notice the paracord loop on the knife sheath attachment as an added precaution.)

I use a long leather belt for my Baldric with my Machax. It works quite well. Not as evolved as yours, though. Good work!

Doc

All these are very cool! I think I'll have to make several: Leather braid, 4 strand diamond for my mountain knives; 550 for my BK 11; and leather, because it looks so functional!

Very nice work guys.

This is really sweet... I haven't seen this set up before...

Anyone else do this? It's basically like neck knife carry, but more like, well... upper torso carry? I like the idea of putting a water bottle or other pouch on the baldric as well...

I love looking through old threads sometimes, the knowledge is plentiful.

Brian Andrews looks so Gangsta back in the day when he was young, or at least one kid shy of his trio today.....

ANOTHER BRING OUT THE DEAD thread revival :D :D :D

I think I know how I'm going to spend next weekend! I think this is a great idea, gentlemen! There is a surplus store 1 block away from the college I attend, and 100' of 550 is like $8.

Thanks for the ideas!

These all look great. Keep them coming!

How do those go with a backpack on?

TIA
B

I put the pack on over the rig. It is still very accessible, and I can shift it around so that it is more to the front or to the side (under the arm). I have also used it with the pack on first, but I prefer to be able to dump the pack quickly without losing my knife or getting tangled in the rig (e.g. if crossing a stream).
