PASS AROUND KNIFE??

hey guys could someone engrave the names of all the members involved along the spine, also down, and around the tang if needed. i think it would be neet and all of the members would be remembered for working on it.
 
MAGNUM, I'm including an info sheet with the blank for each person to fill in and send to the next. That way we'll have an accurate list to go by. I think Alan Folts is going to carve the knife for us, so there might not be room for engraving names other than just engraving BLADE FORUMS/1999 on it.Also, I have to ask this question, Magnum. Have you ever worked ivory brfore? It is very particular, and you really have to know what you're doing. No disrespect meant, I just want to make sure you understand ivory.I've been making knives for three years, and I've never used it. Mostly because of the cost, but also because it is real easy to mess up.If you haven't worked with it before, get ahold of someone that has and will help you out with some tips.
Barry, it will be in the mail tomorrow for sure. Couldn't get to the post office today.I've included a pouch for it so it will have some protection on its journey.
 
You'll like gator, Jens. It works like cow, but kind of rubberized. Sewing is kind of a pain, though. Awl holes tend to close up as you make them, so I've often used a small punch. It's a bit more common here in Florida. :>

Haven't got the gator skin yet Jens. I was gonna make sure you would want to use it first. How much do you think you'll need? The knife is 16" overall. If you want to use the diamond back skin, I have it already and can get it in tha mail asap.
 
WELL, THE JOURNEY HAS BEGUN!! I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A NAME FOR THIS KNIFE. LETS KEEP TRACK OF HOW FAR IT TRAVELS THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCESS, AND CALL IT THE 10,000 MILE KNIFE OR WHAT EVER THE DISTANCE IS.

Hi L6: I think I´ll go for the Gator. I am going to need a piece the lenght af the blade + a few inches. That way I can coat the hole sheath.
Maybe you should contact Osbourn?

10.000 miles? I think its more. When I travelled to New York I believe it was 6000 each way. Correct me if I´m wrong

To save postage you could send it to the last person on the list before me. He could send it together with the knife

Jens, this is working out great. Evidently, I'll be the last one to work on it, so I can just through the gator skin in with it when I send it to you. I just picked 10,000 out of the air. I hope it will be more like 20-25,000. I wonder if any other people have been crazy enough to try this?? lol!!

l-6 i've never worked ivory before, thought it worked like wood? is this a problem, maybe you need someone more experienced to work on it?
 
It's real fragile and heat/light sensitive. I haven't worked it yet out of pure fear. I had a knife with an elephant ivory handle at an SCA war in Arizona. I took it out of my war chest to show to someone, carried it 100 feet, and by the time I had returned it to it's place in the chest, it was cracked. If you have a setup to stabilize, then go for it. If not, I'd say use a lot of superglue, and go slow.

ten coats of super glue, or is that overkill?

I hate to interrupt working people here but I just wanted to say that you guys are a class act. This is a wonderful idea and to see so many talented people jump on it and work together like this is impressive. I'd love to see the results written up in a magazine. Everyone of you deserve some glory on this one.

THANKS HOODOO!!!!!!!!!!! Magnum, yup, Yek is sending some to me and I'll send you enough to do the knife. I have to admit I was a bit concerned at first, but now that I've thought it over, its great. I'm glad you want to try your hand at this project Magnum! It really works in with whole theme I had in mind to start with. If it needs some touchups when I get it to finish, I can take care of that.
Have we got a volunteer to finish the blade before and after heat treat? Maybe if the same person did both it would be easier.

I might as well regrind and give the blade a hand-rubbed finish. Let me know what you think.

Yeah If Barry handled all that he could send it to me heat treated cause I do all my filework after heat treat anyways, so that would be good....

I mentioned scrimshaw earlier. My wife said she would scrimshaw an image in black not colored if you want a ladies touch. She scrimed Butch Vallotton's carry knife 10 years ago. She would do what someone else thought should go on the knife, Scrimshaw would be the very last step.
