I know everyone is busy this time of year, but whats going on with the bowie??? Have we changed our minds and decided not to finish it?

Hey John, a stand would be real nice. As far as the names, we've decided to throw in a certificate with all the folks names and who and where they are on it. A nice brass plate with Blade Forums on it might be a nice touch. Take care! Michael

OK guys and gals, I recieved the knife today, it has a very good flat grind on it, looking good! But before I heat treat it I want to be positively sure to heat treat it befor the filework! As I understand, Alan Folts is going to do the filework and can do it on the hardened blade? Please be sure as a normal file wont cut it when I am done. And please let me know for sure that it is 440-C? Thanks.

And who do I send it to?

It's 440c Rob. Bought it myself!!I guess it goes to Alan next for the file work. I've never carved a blade with the guard already on it. Take care and great job guys!!! Michael

L6, This is my first posting on the Forum. It took me 1.2 hours to catch up on this Bowie Pass around knife. Its a great idea! I never caught who is going to engrave the bolsters. Is anyone down for that yet? I have a friend that always does mine. He isnt a knife maker but is a pro. He has specialized in Colt single-actions for 35 years. I could have him do it. What do you think? Bruce Bump

Bruce, looks like your friend gets the engraving job if he would like it. Just let us know if he will as soon as you can. His name will get put on the certificate, and might even get in a knife magazine or book along with the rest of us.

Oz, are you going to silver solder the guard onto the blade?? What do the rest of you folks think about silver soldering the guard? Till I came here, all the knifenuts I alked to considered silver soldering a sign of excellence and craftsmanship. In the forums I've read posts that some folks think it's a sign of covering up sloppy work. Lemme know how you feel about it.
Looks like we're not going to finish it by Christmas. Oh well, I guess we can consider it a Y2K knife. lol!!
Take care everyone and have a wonderful Christmas!! God Bless! MIchael

L6 Yes he can engrave the bolsters. His name is Tom Moro . He does many syles but loves the wild west era that should fit in nicely with the buffalo theme. Just send the knife to me when the time is right. This is fun! Bruce Bump

This is the display maker.
When It's complete I'll make the display. You can either send it to me for a perfect fit or, exact dimensions and balance would work. Should the sheath and knife be displayed seperate?? Should the cirtificate be framed on the display or, should the base of the display hold the folded cirtificate.
The engraved plate "Blade Forums" is no problem. Let me know

IMO after it comes back from Europe with the sheath it should go to Bruce for the engraving than to Bobbie (me) to do the buffalo scrimshaw than to John for the stand.
John, use your own judgement when you see the knife and sheath.
Then back to L6STEEl (Michael) since it was his great idea.
We should think about the plate maybe "Bladeforums.com 2000"

Rob, I agree 110% with you! I always solder my guards. It just adds an extra touch of class to the knife as well as the moisture thing you pointed out. Oh yeah, I didn't mention this before to you guys, but I decided to keep the knife for myself. Hope you don't mind. Lmao!!!!!!!!!! Don't I wish!!!! It sure is great working with all you Forumites to create something this unique! Take care! Michael

My intention was to leave the soldering of the guard and bolsters to the final assembly. The dovetailing of the bolsters with the ivory would go much smoother if the pieces are still separate. Does a 45 degree angle sound good for the dovetailing?

Props for this idea. it is great... i hope it becomes a tradition on this site... i would love to bid on it if it is auctioned off... maybe the raffle would be better, i might have a better chance at winning it because it sounds like it can pull in a lot of green.
Can anyone post another pic of it in progress, that would be great.
thanks
J

I hope you folks decide on a raffle.
I know it will bring in a lot of money and it would make it possible for ME to win it!

I like the raffle idea also. I think it will bring in more money for the knife and also let everyone have a chance at aquiring this great knife!!
