PASS AROUND KNIFE??

Is it possible to do scrimshaw on it if the ivory has been coated with superglue ? I thought it had to be " raw " to do this.

Hansen,I see magnum .44 wants to mirror finish the ivory which is best for scrimshaw. If the ivory is too rough the ink would run in the cracks when wiping. We don't think the super glue would be a problem. Maybe something like 3 buffalo grazing?

Hey guys.

I received the blade blank this morning. I should be able to get it ground tomorrow. I need to now the name and address of the next person in line. I will have the blade shipped no later than tuesday morning (barring anything unforeseen).

BTW, who is going to drill the tang for pin holes and how should it be done?

RGRAY, fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, this is going to be one beautiful blade!
Who is going to prefinish the blade before and after heat treat?? I don't have anyone on my list.
After they slick it up and get it back from the heat treater, RON SIMONICH, and clean it up again, it goes to ALAN FOLTS for the file work, and then to OZ for the brass work. Then it goes to Magnum 44 for the handles and then back to me for the final finishing. What do you guys think, satin of shiney? I can even bead blast it.
Then I'll send it to Jens for the sheath, and he can send it to RGRAY's wife for the scrim. Have we found a volunteer for the engraving yet? If not, I have a gentleman locally who would do it, if not for free, very reasonably.I hope we can get all our names on it somewhere, either the blade or the gaurd or even the bolsters I guess. Heck, RGRAY'S wife maybe can scrim them on if she can work them inro the picture. Let me know if we need to change the line up, and be sure to add your info to the sheet I included with the blade. Take care! Michael

Hi Michael, my wife(Bobbie)said she would scrim the names. Maybe first initial and last name, alphabetically or in order of work. Everybody should print the way they want it on the list you are passing around. We are thinking maybe the buffalo off of the buffalo nickle in the middle of the handle with the names around it if there is room or on the opposite side. About how many names are we talking? We will know better when we see the finished knife. I will be looking for other buffalo pictures in the mean time. We're getting excited too.

sounds good, i like satin finishes, no bead blast to fancy a knife for it. i like the 3
buffalo idea. maube we should put blade forums 99'. it sounds like it would be a real pain to fit 5 names on a bolster.

RGRAY, COUNTING BOBBIE'S, THERE WILL BE 10-11 NAMES. I THINK IT WOULD BE BEST TO DO LIKE YOU SUGGESTED AND SCRIM THE NAMES ON THE REVERSE. THAT WOULD GIVE BOBBIE MORE ROOM FOR HER ART WORK.

OZ, YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO TRIM THE BUTT END OF THE TANG A LITTLE. EVIDENTLY I LEFT IT A TAD BIGGER THAN THE HILT WHERE THE GUARD WILL GO.

O HYEAH, WHO IS GOING TO FINISH THE BLADE AND REFINISH IT WHEN THEY GET IT BACK FROM THE HEAT TREATER??

I think that it would be better if i reground
the blade and hand rub finish the blade after heat treating. That is if no one has any objections.

HEY FORUMITES, WE NEED A VOLUNTEER TO FINISH THIS BLADE AND SEND IT TO ROB SIMONICH FOR HEAT TREAT. IF YOU WANNA DO IT, LET ME KNOW SOON PLEASE!!

CHECK OUT THE BEAUTIFUL GRIND THAT BARRY JONES DID . IT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!

YESSSS, WE HAVE A VOLUNTEER!!!CORDUROYBEAR IS TAKIN ON THE FINISHING JOB AS WELL AS THROWIN IN SOME FILE WORKED HANDLE LINERS! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
THEN ITS OFF TO HEAT TREAT.

Wow, gorgeous grind, Barry. With the full flat grind like that it's going to have monstrous acuity, and you were right about the swedge, it adds a lot to the look.
L6, that little bit of reprofile shouldn't be a problem. Were we going to do bolsters again? I can donate some of the same brass that I'm using for the crossguard for them to keep some uniformity there. Just let me know dimensions. The brass I'm using is around 1/4 in (5mm) thick, so I think it could work for both applications.

OZ, we figured since we're using mammoth ivory for the handles, it would be best to put bolsters on as well as a guard. That way we wouldn't need as much ivory. Thanks for donating the brass and your time to this project. We were also hoping someone might donate some engraving since we'll have alot of room with the bolsters and all. HINT HINT HINT!!! Looks like the pass around knife is gonna make it all the way! Take care forumites!!!!! Michael

I think bolsters will reduce the space for the names. You said there would be 10 or 11.
IMHO a front bolster would be nice to engrave. Bobbie may be able to put "bladeforms.com 1999" under the buffalo grazing

I'll go ahead and include brass for bolsters anyway, but I'll leave the shaping of them up to someone else. I'll just make sure that it's a bit more brass than would be practical to use. More can always be removed. If we don't use them, no problem. I just don't want us to be caught in the cold if anything goes wrong. Leave options open. And I'm sure that there is someone along the line that could use them if we don't. I like the buffalo idea, by the way. Gives me some ideas on how to theme the filework for the guard.

Oz, Maybe a Old West theme? Bobbie was thinking about doing the lettering in Old West style. Like the old WANTED posters. Lets see what other people think.

My skill on filework is pretty basic. I was thinking of something simple yet elegant. It would look a bit like this, looking at it from the side.
| \ \ \ \ \ \ 0 / / / / / / |
Nothing too gaudy, but enough to fit with the rest of the elegance.
Opinions?
