Pass Around Salsa Idea

I thought I'd BTTT this, for the person that has the Salsa now.

Please try to keep it to a week and pass it on. If you are going to be out of town, on vacation, etc., send it on before you go. Remember there are
people in line behind you.

Thanks,

...thought this had ended by now... (hadn't seen a post for a long time)

DaveH - everything going ok?

I was getting a little worried myself. Kinda eager to play with the Salsa when it makes it around my way.:D

The Salsa should have arrived at its new temporary home by now. I had it for a couple of weeks (probably longer than I should have) and really enjoyed playing with it. This is a great project that Dave has put together.

I didn't get to put it to the hard use test that I'd planned on -- my wife and I put off the flooring project til this past weekend. We wanted three days in case we screwed anything up in a major way .

All in all I liked the Salsa, but I wouldn't use is as an EDC. It's way too stubby and wide and takes up too much real estate in your pocket. It's a great weekend/work around the house kind of knife -- more like a small pickup truck than an SUV, if you know what I mean.

The compression lock was pretty cool. I had no problems opening or closing the knife one handed.

Switching the clip from left handed to right handed configuration was much harder than it should have been.

The Cobra Hood does add to the openability of the knife, but is probably bigger than it really needs to be. A small lip on the upper edge of the Spyderhole would be sufficient.

The green coating didn't seem to be as well done as the coating on my Lum Chinese.

I kind of like the Salsa logo -- it makes the knife seem "friendlier."

The AUS8 blade sharpens up nicely. I didn't put it to extreme use, so I don't know how well it holds an edge. But touching it up was quick and easy.

The knife is very wide. In the front pocket of a pair of jeans, it takes up so much room that it was hard to even get my keys into my pocket. The wide handle does make for a pretty secure grip, so you'll have to decide for yourself if the tradeoff is worth it.

The grip angle is kind of odd. When grip the knife with your fingers in the grooves, your wrist is cocked slightly upward. That makes it difficult to cut with the blade parallel to the ground unless you raise your elbow -- a slightly uncomfortable position.

In short, another nifty knife from Sal and company. It's a great utility knife, but is a little limited for every day carry for me.

Thanks again to Dave for starting this project. I had a lot of fun playing with the Salsa. I hope my comments are helpful, or at least interesting, to those who are considering a Salsa.

Thanks, Chad.

Things are going a bit slow, but it's just now in Louisiana, at person #5. Here's the remaining list at this point:

5 - John
6 - Revolvergeek
7 - one2gofst
8 - Pahl
9 - Maurice
10 - DFox
11 - Mschwoeb
12 - BobbyB
13 - Fishbulb
14 - D7reamers

I'll repeat my plea, please try to get it passed on promptly when you have had your week. Also, I believe we are missing at least 2 address cards, and they may be out of order. If you receive the Salsa and the card order doesn't match or is one is missing contact me and we can straighten it out.

I will say though that I'm very pleased that people really like the idea. Thanks Everyone!

I received the Salsa today and I'll share some initial impressions.

First off, it's a neat little knife and obviously well made. It feels very stout. It has a lot of "bells & whistles"; Cobra Hood, oversize hole, compression lock, switchable wire clip, etc…You get a lot of knife for your money.

The Salsa is designed to be small and that's the biggest fault I find. I have medium-large hands and find that the handle is too short for my grip. The finger notches do not fit my fingers. If the notches fit your fingers then you'll love the grip, if not then you'll wish for a more traditional shape.

The Cobra Hood is cool but I don't see a need for it. I have yet to use it during opening. It also gets in the way pocketing the knife. However, it offers a great thumb rest in the saber grip.

The wire clip is way stiffer and stronger than I ever imagined. I had thought that it would be easily damaged; no chance. It is so stiff that clipping onto your pocket can be a challenge. I'm sure I will adjust to it.

The new style ball-detent on the comp. lock is great. Very secure! The action is also buttery smooth. It has very good, but not perfect lock-up. A slight amount of vertical play is noticeable.

I tried the Salsa out on some seasoned oak limbs and found that the handle was just too uncomfortable under hard cutting tasks. The blade didn't seem too bite into the oak as well as other steels. My L'il Temperance was biting in deeper and easier even though the blade felt a bit duller. I'll try it out on cardboard at work tomorrow.

I'll use it a few days and see how my opinions change.

Wow! Thought I had been skipped, its only @ #5 now. Well I will continue to look forward to its arrival. Reports sound both good and bad about some of its attributes, only time will tell. But that's why we have more than vanilla ice cream right?

Raden,

Sorry, this list is closed. If we do another passaround there will be a new thread.

One week later and I'm not sold. It's a great, well built knife, but it's not for me. I just don't care for a knife this small. That's o.k. Spyderco makes plenty of other knives that I love!

Sorry all, been swamped with meetings the past two days and did not mail the Salsa out first of the week like I had planned, but it will go out to Steve today.

Interesting little knife. Much more comfortable in my hand and the clip also works much better than I had expected. The nice wide thin flat ground blade cuts like crazy in cardboard and paper which is 90% of what I cut on a day-to-day basis.

I was a little worried at first by how high it rides in the pocket, but no one commented on it and it stayed put, and it gave me no problems for right hand carry. Left hand was a different matter and I will discuss that in a minute.

The compression lock is fast and easy to operate right handed, but almost impossible for me to close left handed. I only have about 40% movement in the tip knuckle of my left index finger, so this my be part of the problem. Axis locks and regular lockbacks don't bother me though.

The cobra hood really doesn't do a lot for me and if i buy a Salsa I will probably end up thinning the hood until it is only slightly thicker than the spine of the blade. I like the feel of it when the blade is open, but when closed it is far too easy for my hand to brush the blade open. This did not cause any injury or damage to pocket when carried right handed, spine against the seam of the pocket.

I normally carry a second folder clipped to my left pocket, always with the clip set up for right hand carry, so the spine is out. Never had a problem with this before (Endura, Delica, Wegners, Griptillians, Rookie, AFCK with the clip remounted for tip up), but the first time I carried the Salsa like this and went to get my keys the blade opened right up and really would have cut the heck out of me if I had not stopped fast when i felt the blade. Very scary!

All in all an interesting little knife, and if I buy one I will probably open up the choil just a little, thin the hood a lot, and remove the clip, add a tail and just carry it down in my pocket.

Thanks for the chance to try it out!!!
Danny

I'm a lefty who uses the Salsa as my EDC most of the time. I operate the compression lock with my left thumb, and it seems to work well...

Anybody seen one2gofst? (Steve)

I believe you should have it by now, let me know. Thanks

I got it and I sent you an email. I guess it did not go through. Got it the other day. Iwill keep it for a week and send it on along with a post on this thread.

I just thought I'd BTT this with some info, we are at person #7, with the remaining list being, with the possibility of some slight rearrangement:

8 - Pahl

10 - DFox
11 - Mschwoeb
12 - BobbyB
13 - Fishbulb

Hi Dave. This is a really Great idea, and implementation. Thanx from our end. As a Manufacturer, we get great input for refinement and improvement. If there any other Spyderco models you might be interested to do this with, let us know.

Thank you Sal, I really appreciate the the support you have offered.

I may start another of my own in a week or so, honestly it is a bit of work to keep track of things. We currently have some other threads about passarounds that include a shorter time period for evaluation that would help.

As far as doing other models, I'll email you. :)

Thanks,
