Passaround - Ultralite Hunter

Got the knife last week. Everything is cool. I will play with it this weekend and try to get it out early next week.

The knife is on its way to RobKevlar. Having a rough week but got to play for a while. Will get something written up soon. Got a $3.7M construction project going. So to say it's crazy is an understatement. Thanks for the chance to check this out.

I've been thinking about getting a bushcraft knife from JK, I love dealing with the custom makers on this site and giving them my business. I'd love to check this knife out if it's still in rotation. if not no biggy, I'm sure I'll still order a knife anyways in the near future.
Either way thanks for the opportunity and letting one of your knives be passed around

It should still be in rotation, I just don`t know where! Email me your address, I`ll be happy to include you.

It`s my understanding that it is being mailed to JMSCustoms on Monday, Rob is done with it.

John - who has the knife?

I think the rules were pretty clear -

Rules:
1. You agree to post pictures that you take of the knife and your testing. If you cannot do this - do not sign up! I would like it if at least one of the testers post a review using it in the outdoors in the Outdoor Gear, Survival Equipment & More Forum.
2. You agree to PERSONALLY mail the knife to the next participant in a timely fashion - at least within two weeks, and keep the passaround post updated.
3. You agree to insure the package for $150 when you ship it to cover loss of the knife.
4. You agree that it is legal to own the knife in your area.
5. You give permission for me to pass on your address to the participant before you so they can mail you the knife

I have the knife. I shipped it out but it came back to me as "undeliverable" After some heat from the Girlfriend about "buying" another knife (she picks up the mail) I had her open it since I wasn't expecting a package. I discovered that I switched two numbers on the zip code by mistake. The PO didn't catch it either when I got the tracking number. It will go back out ASAP. I was working on the review last night and hope to have the photos uploaded to my photobucket and all of my fat finger typos clean up and published here wthis weekend.

I need to start off by saying that I am a noob to the knife world. Especially the custom makers. This is also my first pass a-round so I'm learning as I go. My first mistake was not double checking the address that I sent the knife onto. Luckily it made its way back and will be going out in the mail tomorrow.

My first impression of the knife when I opened it was it fit my hand better than expected. I found my way to bladeforums via Fiddleback Forge. Andy Roy is known for his outstanding handle ergonomics so I have high standards for hand feel. The Ultralite Hunter didn't disappointment. The micarta felt great and looked like it had aged nicely. This handle is the first aged micarta handle that I've gotten my hands on and I'm impressed. I'm usually a wood handle guy so I've stayed away from the micarta handles. I will be expanding my handle selections in the future.

The blade on this knife seems like its a little thin to be a hunter. When harvesting small to large game you need to bust through some heavy bones int he pelvic bone and the chest cavity while skinning or quartering. Yes a saw can and should be used for this but its nice to have a nice that is able to do it as well. I think this model would benefit from moving to a 3/32" or 1/8" blade thickness.

The edge when I got it looked like it had been fiddled with. I'm not great at sharpening so I didn't attempt it. The edge was able to do some feathering on some rough cut Doug Fir that has been out in the elements for about 2 years. I included a pic of that. To be honest its my first attempt at a featherstick. I'm not a bushcraft guy but feathersticks seem to be the trend in reviews around bladeforums.

Overall I liked the knife and would purchase one to add to my collection. Thanks for the opportunity to review it.

Nice review Rob.
I switched 2 numbers in the zip. I was surprised that the PO didn't flag it when they entered the address for the label. I guess I assumed their system would have caught something like that.

Nice review and pictures, Rob.

John's thinner knives work great as slicers, but that 01 would hold up to some rough use, like getting pounded through a bone.

I am not sure if you saw the JK Knives Torture Test passaround, but that passaround gave me a new respect for John's heat tread and the durability of his 01.

Thanks for the pictures and your thoughts on the knife.

Glad the USPS got the package back to you - easy thing to do.

I have always wondered why the USPS site cannot derive the town name from the address and or zip code or vice versa.

Just got the knife in the mail about 5 minutes ago. I'd nearly forgotten about the passaround. :D On that note, I don't have an address for mqqn to send it along to him after I'm done with my review.

Thanks for the update, JSM -
