Patch Knife Review

Nice Patch Knife Bud. It is great that the girls in your life love knives as well. My now 13 y.o. grandson got a Leatherman for his birthday on Saturday. If he does not misplace it in a couple of months, I may forgive and forget the lost knife fiasco and bring him into the Fiddleback fold.

That is a real beauty Bud! The tang tapering is really nice on that one. I really like lighter ironwood with dark streaks.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

Phil

I was finally able to stop by Fiddleback HQ today and pick up my Ironwood Patch. Well worth the wait and there's nothing really I can say about it that Phil hasnt already covered.

Great design in an awesome size. To quote my wife and daughter when I let them hold/inspect it, 'ooooohhhh' and 'ahhhhh'. My daughter has already asked, 'when you get tired of it can I have it?'. To which my wife replied, 'get in line behind me! I'm calling dibs right now!'

Picture time - and for those who may be new to the Fiddleback world - First pic is Top to Bottom; Bushboot in Osage Orange, Patch in Arizona Ironwood, Hiking Buddy in Box Elder Burl

You've got a nice one there! Is the Arizona Ironwood a heavy wood?

Yes. Dense and heavier than most. To me, it offers great balance on a tapered tang.

Thanks for the reply. That thing looks like it's tapered to almost nothing! Out of all the different ironwood pics I've seen people post, yours officially makes me think that someday I should get one. I will definetly keep my eyes peeled and it will need a TT.

Here's the pic you requested schimitte! I have using the hell outta my other patch knife and I love it. Perfect size for me.

Just wanted to bump this review and extend a thanks to Mr Phil. :) this is a fantastic review that I came back to again and again while trying to decide if a Patch was for me. I finally got one and it's a sweet little knife!

Oddly enough, the more I use knives, my sizes keep going smaller and smaller. This size is great for my uses and I'm super excited that Andy and Co are making more in this size range.

Thanks again Phil

I'm finding that's the case too.

Big knives are increasingly losing their appeal for me. Lately, I've been EDC-ing a stainless Esquire. But I have a Patch on the way too. Looking forward to checking it out.

Glad you finally got one schmittie!

Thanks buddy

Funny how that works out with some of us. A smaller knife does provide lots of control though. I hope you like the Patch when you get it. And an Esquire is one I'm dying to get my hands on!

I appreciate the acknowledgement schmittie. The main purpose of a review for me is to help people make informed decisions whether a particular knife is right for them or not. I am glad that you found the review helpful and that you enjoy your Patch. It is a versatile little knife.

Just read this on behalf of a conversation with TTT :) man what an awesome review, great pics great info and yes telling us which you would choose is right on target! Glad I have my patch :)

Nice seeing this thread again. It reminded me that it helped me convince myself to try a patch knife. It's one of my favorites now. Thanks Phil.

I'm really glad this thread was bumped, because my opinion of the Patch has totally changed. Being from the Recluse family, I was a bit hesitant about whether I would like the knife. One of my first Fiddlebacks was a very thin handled recluse and we did not get along well. For some reason it hit me in all the wrong spots and I never could get comfortable with it. The dichotomy was that it had some one of the best scales I've ever seen on a Fiddleback. It eventually moved along. When Phil stopped by for some BBQ last year I had the opportunity to handle the Patch reviewed here. Phil had already sent me the Leuku shown in this thread to test for an earlier review and I loved that knife (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1238135-Beyond-the-BC-Bigger-knives-Part-2). He swayed me enough on that one that I acquired one of my own soon after. I think ;) I could have even ended up with the Patch shown here, but I went with a BC Sr. that day, so obviously I wasn't that enamored with it.

Eventually, I had the opportunity to snag my own and under Phil's recommendation I bought one. I was very lucky to get one that was 3/32" and I think that makes all the difference in the tasks I use the knife for. It is a very nimble and light knife. What sold me was a several week road trip we took to MT recently. I was committed to give the Patch its fair shot and so early in the trip, I switched my standard EDC folder for the Patch in a JouFuu clip-on sheath and used it the rest of the way. The Patch and I finally bonded. My wife ate her steak in a very posh steakhouse and proclaimed that all steakhouses should provide better knives “to make their steak seem like better cuts meat instead of having to eat it with the grapefruit spoon of a knife they normally provide”.

I still EDC that knife a majority of the time and it's a go-to now. I been on the lookout for just the right one to get another. (If any of you have a Shadetree with black bolster in 1/8 A2 you want to let go, please let me know!:D Sorry for the plug on my own behalf). One thing is for sure is that opinions can change, and they can change a bunch. On that same trip I was evaluating large/small(er) knife combos that could come as close to possible to "doing it all". At the time my combo was a Camp + BCK. For the recent past it has been a custom shop Camp + Patch, and I am really struggling to find something that combo can't do. For me, Patch has run the full spectrum of my opinion, but I love that little knife now. I can't imagine not having one. Once again, Phil's review was spot on.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I am glad that you enjoyed it.

This is my favorite review of the ones I have done. I feel like it has held up well over time. Based on the comments I have received in the last year, this review seems to have led to a lot of Patch sales for Andy.

I still have my Patch and use it regularly. My view of it has only gotten better over time. Actually, the whole Recluse family really impresses me with its versatility. Going along with what Phillip said above about his Patch, I recommend that you go with the thinner steel options on any of these models to not sacrifice the inherent nimbleness of the designs.

Thanks again,

Phil
