Here are some pics of a sheath that master sheath maker Paul Long has created for my old carbon fighting bowie by Bill Bagwell. This knife has been pictured here before and is my carry and user blade. In a past thread I showed a new one almost just like this one that I just got in case something would happen to this one. this is the third sheath that I have for this knife and by far my favorite. I told Paul that this sheath would be used extensively and that it had to be rugged and not overly fancy. The special part about this sheath besides it is carring my favorite carry blade and Paul's superb craftmanship is that the inlay is from my largest cape buffalo to date. I harvested this bull in the Selous in Tanzania about 3 years ago. Cape Buffalo skin is very tough and should last my life time if it is properly cared for. Another special part of this package is the oversize custom stud that my gunsmith Lestor knipe hand turned and fluted and then browned to match the buffalo inlay. This whole package is very special to me knife, sheath and stud and will acompany me on many of my journeys city and wilderness Special thanks to Paul , Lester and Bill for all the fantastic work. Will post some more pics of close ups when I get blade in hand. Thanks for looking

This really shows the difference between a sheath designed for hard use, and one designed for, ahem, sitting there, more or less(showcasing aesthetics).:o

You should get some good enjoyment out of this one.

Joe, next time you plan an African hunt, be sure and add a tag for a good knife sharpener.

Paul does great work, ive got several to send his way soon. Seeing this belt stud gives me some ideas on the one you sent me....

With Hollywood face and bulging arms I mistook you for Wheeler for a sec. But you're too bronze for him, cuz he lives in coastal WA where the sun don't shine and blacks are brown and whites are anemic white.

Terrific knife/sheath combo for safari--big blade/tough sheath for big country/beasts. A user not too fancy, eh??? The sheath looks like a museum piece compared to the crap I pack on my hunts. Well, if there is such a thing as unanimity on this forum, it's where to go to get a quality sheath. And I must make my pilgrimage to him soon.

I've heard of African hairless dogs but not hairless buffs. Very impressive head. Looks like a shoulder shot, which must of dumped him in a cloud of dust, precluding any matador-like heroics with the Bagwell.

Ken I shot that bull with a .470 nitro broke his right shoulder with the first he spun into it and I broke his left shoulder with the second shot he still went 60 some yards till he collapsed you can see how his front legs are folded back when his shoulders finally gave out. The two shots in the back are when I walked up and finished him. I have alot of respect for that old boy i hit him good two fast shots and he kept going. He was the baldest bull I have seen he was real old only problem is the same thing is happening to me.

Sixty yards with both shoulders busted with a .470! Now that's amazing . . . and scary. You had a backup gun right? In my experience with N.A game, including moose, a shoulder shot collapses them so fast you're not sure you hit'em. Beware, the buff!

Ken

In my limited experience killing cape buffalo I have shot five if you hit um hard and they are calm not pumped up already they will die like anything else. But when they are pissed off already and got there adrenilene up they take some killing

That's one of the nicest Paul Long sheaths I have seen. The little subtle touches in a knife or sheath can really make a difference IMO.

Speaking of adrenaline, yours must have been up there too. ;) :D

Thanks Kevin you have excellent taste

Very nice sheath and cool pic of two critters most likely to stomp you into a grease spot:D Kenny Rowe made me a folder pouch out of cape buffalo. It is a very interesting looking hide.

Great Hippo what country did you shoot him and what did you use

Shot him in Zimbabwe by the Zambezi River with a 375HH Model 70.

My buff isn't near as big as shot yours. Shot it with a 416 in Matesi. I'm going back in May for buff again. (With my Paul Long sheathed knife too :D)
Went ele hunting last October - dangerous game is addicting, eh?

That is a great buff - very hard bosses, very mature. What kind of of double is that? My buddy has a .470 Nitro Chapuis and a .500 Nitro Searcy. He is trying to talk me into a double rifle. I've got three knives with Paul Long sheathes - all of them very nice -I'm gonna have to get a sheath (or 100:D) made from some elephant cape when I get it back from the tannery.

Are you getting the hide dyed? If you go grey, black or peanut brittle, I would surely relish a piece big enough for a sheath inlay!!!!

(and would be willing to pay for the privilege)
