Paul Long Rocks my old Bagwell

That is a great buff - very hard bosses, very mature. What kind of of double is that? My buddy has a .470 Nitro Chapuis and a .500 Nitro Searcy. He is trying to talk me into a double rifle. I've got three knives with Paul Long sheathes - all of them very nice -I'm gonna have to get a sheath (or 100:D) made from some elephant cape when I get it back from the tannery.

Very nice elephant. The double is a blaser I had the gun fitted for me and that is what you need to do to make it feel like your grand pa's fox shotgun when you mount it it is there and the fast 2 nd shot is what a double is all about. You do not need a double a good bolt gun like yours will always get it done. I have shot a few with a custom cz built by Lon Paul in 375 H&H and still use that gun for longer more precise shots but for up close when things get fast a big double with good express sights is the ticket plus it is fun as hell to go old school. Looks like you will get the use out of it I would listen to your buddy and get a double check out the Heym's. Again great elephant

Can't wait to see it up close and personal! Great craftmanship from Paul and Lestor. A perfect match for the Bagwell!

Paul,
Great buffs, sheath and knife. Can you give more info on the knife specs?

Ray

Nice guns, guys. Everyone wishes they could afford a double but you can't go wrong with one of the Winchester Model 70 Classics. I had one of the original Super Grades when they released them in the early 90's and my brother has 4 of them now. He is on the lookout for a Safari Express in .375, but since FN shut them down, those things are kinda scarce. I told him to check into getting his .338 Win Mag Super Grade upgraded. Folks rechamber those all the time for Weatherby and RUM rounds. I wouldn't think that .375 would be a prob with the appropriate mods. Can't wait to see what you do with that elephant hide, Joe.

Ray the knife in the sheath is an older forged carbon Bill Bagwell Fighter/bowie. The blade is 9 1/2 Long by almost an 1 1/2 wide. .

Great looking sheath. Compliments the knife very well. Really liking Paul's bow tie retention system that he has recently come up with.

I really like Paul's new retention strap too. It just adds another dimension and degree of uniqueness to the sheath.

But speaking of sheaths in general, functionally is a strap of any type really necessary?

Let's face it, is there any chance at all, or what would you have to be doing in order for 91/2" bladed Bowie to come out of the sheath? Somersaults maybe? ;) :) Even with a smaller say 6/7" blade?

Before finding Paul, I found the problem was most always the sheath/knife being made too tight. To the point where one would almost bust a gut putting it in and out. To Paul's credit, every sheath of his always seems to "fit like a glove".

I will never ride a 4-wheeler again without a retention sheath....

Kevin, the great thing about it is it is not attached to the sheath. So, you have optional use. And, think of all the scrap leather Paul has laying around the shop. It will keep his place a lot more tidy! :D

I think the retntion strap is a great idea. I believe it will come in real handy when lashing it to a pack or putting it in a pack. No one wants to reach in there pack feel around and come out bleeding. It's just Pauls way of going that little extra for the customer and I know when packing the knife when I do not need to draw it fast or traveling on horseback I will use it

Agree completely.

I don't usually post in threads where my name is seen as frequently as this, but with regard to the retention strap.....

It is intended, as Joe said, to be used or not used. As a display sheath or around a camp or some other benign setting the strap is not necessary, but the afore mentioned 4 wheeler, tied to a pack, or horse back, it might be very useful to pop it onto the sheath just to make sure your knife "absolutely, positively" arrives along with you. It is not an extra cost option. It comes free if the sheath is for a knife where the application of this strap is possible. I just thought it would be a handy thing to use.....or not use.

The "fit like a glove" comment by Kevin is possible and very likely when I have the advantage of having the knife in my shop so I can actually fit the sheath to the knife. I've done it also working from good tracings on bowie style knives, but really it's luck of the draw there.

Paul

Paul made it to the post office yesterday more buffalo skin on the way and matt lamey said the knife and one of my studs he finished to match the knife will be going to you early in the coming week. You are a true gentleman and it is more than a pleasure to do business with you. Thanks again

The thing I like best about the retention strap IS it's optional use. I think it's a brilliant idea.

Roger

As I said earlier, I completely agree that the retention strap adds to the looks and is a cool idea and is good to help hold the bowie in if stored in a pack.
But my point is that, ones got to be doing some crazy stuff to loose a 9-1/2" bladed bowie from a belted sheath.
I will definitely ask Paul to supply one with my next sheath.

The "Gambler's set" sheaths were made from a tracing and could not fit any better.

JP,
Paul does indeed do excellent work. I have one of Paul's sheath and have to agree he is one of, if not the best, that I have seen. Obviously this is a sash sheath, but is there another way to wear the sheath. i.e. hidden belt loop around back? I like the idea of having the option wearing a knife on a a belt, or tucked behind it. The removable retention strap is an excellent idea. The next one I have made will be similar to yours.
Bob

This one does not have a hidden belt loop on the back Paul offered to put one on but I declined. I carry a knife in a certain way either behind hip thru belt or behind hip in pants. Know and then in front of hip for crossdraw if very active. I use a right hand sheath like I said carried behind my left hip I draw it left hand hammer grip blade down edge out in one sweeping motion . I have gotton used to carring on my left because know and then when allowed I carry a pistol on my right strong side. I like to carry what I carry in the same spot all the time so I can build muscle memory and then hopefully in a panic muscle reaction just takes over They say you have to do something 2500 times till the movement gets commited to muscle memory. I have drawn a knife or a gun the same way for so long I do not fumble to much I hope this makes sense. I like an oversized stud about 2 inches from the mouth of the sheath that way I can carry a 9 1/2 to 10 inch blade comfortablely with out the tip of the sheath bending over when I sit and the knife is inside my wasteband. Paul said he renforced the tip on this sheath internaly and can't wait to see how it works
