The sharpmaker (or lansky crock-stick) makes easy work of a recurve, infact its no different than a regular blade, only with bench stones is a recurve an issue.
I was stupid when I was buying my sharpenig equip., I purchased my set of stones one a a time (DMT C, F & EF and spyderco F) first before getting a Sharpmaker, looking back I should of done it the other way and got the SM first (as was recommended by, well everyone)
When my friends ask me what they need to get their knives sharp I recommend a sharpmaker as the onl piece of equipment they'll ever need to buy (plus the diamond rods of they want to make their lives easier but not necessary) you can pretty much put an edge on any type of blade, any shape, serrated or plain. I'm very competent in my free handing and enjoy doing it and after using my set of stones and stropping I get almost perfect edge, but if I somehow lost all the rest of my sharpening setup, as long as I still had the SM I could keep all my knives up to my standards no problem.
For a recurve, or anything else said to be hard to sharpen, a SM makes simple work out of it and does plain edges amazingly as well.
