PayPal warning

It has to do with the geographic association, it is a "hot or key word" and it triggers an automated lock down.

I can see how it's a hot word but still think if non criminal Americans use hot words in their communication they would not be surveillanced. After all its not Communist East Germany here in the States. As I understand it they only get warrants to surveilance if one party of the communication or payment is a terrorist or other known criminal or suspect and after the patriot act they can do it kind of without a warrant but still not against innocent Americans.

Anyways I believe if u got nothing to hide u have nothing to fear.
However if (!) this story here is true and even if you are innocent, and have nothing to hide, they delay payments for days and make one look like a no good customer who doesn't pay in time well
then there is something to fear even if you got nothing to hide.

Scary? Or is this only a small price to pay? How far can they go to protect us?
They might argue holding back a payment might not be enough. What if its a real so far unknown terrorist who besides that payment in question might strike tomorrow? Holding the person in prison, just in case, until the meaning of "damascus" is clear might save countless lives,
or not and one incarcerated an innocent or interfered with his payments and tainted his honor in this case (if true)

I still don't buy that they go this far and on top of that admit it and reveal the hot word in question.

.... Btw I thought they don't spy on citizens as long as communication and payments (I assume) don't connect to foreign targets. Looking for keywords and affecting things of our lives such as delaying of payments seems kind of weird to me. What is also strange that PayPal would reveal what they do and go in such detail as to name specific key words. Even indirect hints of such nature are usually not given as in not to aid the real terrorists.
Not calling BS but very surprised if true.

You would be wrong. I am not guessing., I worked for AT&T and was involved in its compliance with Echelon.

They didn't mention exact keywords, but it didn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out. Especially after a second person had the same problem with the same seller. I don't think Dan Graves is secretly supporting ISIS, so the keyword is obvious.

It's not a secret. Just not mentioned by the media or the governments involved. I didn't have any degree of clearance at that time.

lol. Yeah they made it kind of obvious. Usually they'd just say we don't know or some technical thing happened.

Maybe the customer service PayPal guy had no clue and was just guessing what might have happened based on a movie he saw. If he'd been trained properly and really had something to hide you shouldn't have come to know.

Any large amount of mine takes much longer to clear than small amounts even if it's certified check (supposedly as good as cash) and from my bank account to another one of my accounts. Weirdos. Took some back and forth messages to Wellsfargo to not miss my college fee deadline.

PayPal sucks.. Have been waiting ~2 weeks for a refund to process.. "temporary hold". They must make a fortune sitting on all the cash that they put on hold.. Can't wait for Apple pay to develop and provide some competition.

Making a fortune with interest rates what they are? Hmm, not really. As far as certain keywords, remember there is the No Such Agency that can and does surveil at their own discretion, it's not a conspiracy theory, it's a federal law (Patriot Act).

The verbal content of your telephone conversations has been at least screened by computers decades before the Patriot Act was passed.

That's why I can't understand the excitement over collecting call detail - "metadata". The Government has been at least screening the actual words, and listening to some conversations verbatim, for generations.

.. They processed 63 billion in 2014.. If they hold on for an extra day on average.. That's 172 million in cash on their balance sheet..

I finally got the funds refunded and my account limitations off.

PayPal claims it's not them but government regulations and apologized.

I sent the maker the funds immediately and he was cool about it.

*Im also not sure why someone is questioning my account about this issue, just call PayPal and they will tell you not to put the word damascus in the description or other terrorist related words.

And what about this new cupboard which I didnt buy in my house and suddenly the electricity bill is much higher.
Oh wait that was the joke about KGB bugs.
Ours of course are more advanced.

Lmao at you doubting my post. I was trying to help other buyers (I didn't know but there has been another thread about the very same issues). This is why I post less now, people like you who have no clue on a situation and immediately start proclaiming doubt and questioning if the OP is lying. Maybe check the reputation of the poster before making ignorant statements.

Come on, the agencies and many here at BF say if you got nothing to hide than there'll be no impact on you with all the surveillance and what not.
You haven't done anything evil thus there shouldn't have been anything negative been happening to you. That they held back your payment means either your story could be wrong or our agencies and conservative friends are lying and the liberals are right.
Never said you were lying but if your story contradicts what most others claim then why not question it to receive more clarification?
Sorry if that would seriously stop you from trying to help others. I hope my doubt will not affect your selflesness that much.

You seem to be the only one that does not understand. Again, there have been many knife collectors that have had their payments suspended "without doing anything wrong". What I didn't like is your ignorant comments, which you continue to post. Most people research or do something very simple as a search to see that Paypal will immediately suspend any transaction with the word "damascus" in the description. In fact, its easy for you to just give them a call and ask them, they will tell you point blank you should not put that word in the description, its flagged by the government.

Don't insinuate that I did something wrong to have my transactions suspended for "doing something evil". I deal with some of the biggest makers in the custom industry, a simple check of my IG or any of my post here would indicate the level of my collection. I'm beginning to think you are just a troll that doesn't even like knives. I won't be wasting anymore time on your nonsense.

Do you not see a disconnect between what a lot of people claim should never happen and then what actually happened in real life, to you even if you were not (!) doing anything evil. Again "not anything evil". If I didn't say that clearly enough earlier, my mistake. Sometimes I'm indirect and didn't want to hint that you were most likely wrong. I just voiced surprise and indirectly questioned the people who say nothing to hide, nothing to fear... Again thats just what I intended but might have come across wrongly.
Again sorry for the confusion and I seriously hope that it wouldn't prevent you from helping others in the future.
I have been bitten once by a Scandinavian knife but I'm far from a Troll, I hope.
How did you guess (wrongly) I might not like knives? Didn't even talk about knives here. Once I badmouthed the Buck Redpoint with folded teflon washers and a pivot screw so short its thread had only one turn into its pivot nut. Did you refer to that post?
