I used to be a Remington guy for Shotguns, but Mossberg has really won me over. Love my Ruger 10-22 also, but there a re a few great 22 rifles out there. That Lever action 30-30 sounds about perfect too.

MM I am going to see if I can convince Todd to do some blades in A2. Everything I have heard is that A2 takes an edge like nothing else on earth, and with Todd's grinds that sounds pretty sexy to me.
O1 takes a keen edge too, just wondering how screaming he could get A2 on some of his blades.

They did cancel quite a bit of good TV shows.... But there are several that came out that are pretty good IMO.

I like "The Last Ship"
I like "You're the Worst" This show is HILARIOUS!!
I like "The Lottery"
I like "Manhattan"
I like "Rush" which is really similar to "Royal Pains"... Just with more attitude.

My wife likes "The strain" and "Extant" ..... Extant is OK... But i get bored with it easily.

I've heard that, donno. This is my first O1 blade, and it's interesting for sure. It's harder to sand down with sandpaper than 1095, and when I get I really good edge on it, it looses it fast, however, it keeps cutting at a paper cutting edge for a looooooong time, and easily restored. I like it.

Wouldn't do much good in the current rimfire drought we're facing. They're not much good if all you can do is look at them.

Start sucking up to Gunyon. :D

I don't really have an issue with finding .22 ammo, I find it all over the place. Oh well, I'd trade all that for Gunyon's supply of inanimate pigs. :p

Hmmm.... While i dont doubt that it takes a great edge.... Id have a hard time believing it takes a better edge than anything else on earth.... But you got my attention, and now i will go and do a bit of reading LOL

The steels i really want to try as it stands is PD-1, Vanadis 4 extra, and AEB-L.

The Remington 870 is on my radar for sure. It seems like popular choice around here.

My Dad might hand me down a Winchester model 94 30 30 he has had since the 60s. I don't know anything about it. Is it any good? It is a shorter gun, but the woods are thick here and that might be a good thing. From what I hear from other hunters, there aren't many chances for long shots around here.

Jeremy

For deer in New England, the Winchester would be fine if the barrel is not shot out. You will probably not be taking very many 300 yard shots.:D For everything else you mentioned, the 870 would be suitable, especially if it can use choke tubes.

Daizee does great things with A2. I have two of them and both are just... DAMN!
You took the fun out of the fun bowl :D

Hawaii is not in the middle of other states.. Hence why the interstates... But whatever :p
I think the real reason Hawaii has interstates so they don't feel discriminated against. You know how PC everything has to be now.

If you are looking for a good shotty on the cheap you might check out a Maverick 88 by Mossberg. I have had one for over a decade and it has never skipped a beat and I have put an absurd amount of shells through mine. It isnt pretty, fancy, or in any way special, but in my opinion its a really good value. There are a lot of aftermarket accessories out there that fit it on the cheap and it would make a good starter shotty. I have heard our own Moose (if I remember correctly) describing them as the "Becker Knife" of the shotgun world. As far as rifles go you always need .22 and Ruger's 10/22 is a really good option, or even a cheaper Marlin would work just fine, maybe even a Henry lever action. Just some options. Savage makes a good "remingtion 700" (or something like that) type variant that I have not heard any bad things about either, I just cannot remember the name of it. Just some things to mull over.

I have been real curious about A2 and might try playing around with some in the future. Right now I am still working on that knife project with Todd and I'm really excited to see how it all turns out before I start grinding some more steel. Albeit I have been drawing up knife designs like a mad man that I am pretty excited about that I think theoretically would made some good cutters. BUT gotta see how this one turns out first!

Everything I have heard is that A2 takes an edge like nothing else on earth...

First time I've heard that. A2 is a good well-balanced steel but it's hardly the be-all/end-all in terms of fine edges... or anything else for that matter.

Dresnor, if neither of you have shot much or at all before, I'd think long and hard about buying a decent .177 or .22 pellet rifle before getting a .22LR or 30-30. Much cheaper to buy and shoot, you can take small game with them legally (check local regulations), easy to set up a safe practice range. Super way to learn the basics.

I'm not even going to try to recommend a specific model; there are entire forums dedicated to them, so just start doing some reading. You can spend anywhere from $100 to thousands.

I'm pretty well convinced if I could only own one general purpose/survival/defense firearm, it would be a "combo" pump 12 ga. like the other fellows described. With the right ammo you can kill basically anything in America that you can see clearly without a scope. Including any bad guy that bursts into your house (without slinging bullets through him, through the walls and all over the neighborhood). Now be reasonable... I wouldn't be lobbing slugs at a grizzly or moose from 100 yards of course... but if the biggest game in your area is whitetail deer, and unless you're hunting across 300-yard beanfields, a 12 gauge is plenty of gun.

Yea first time i heard it too... But 5 minutes of searching the interwebs led me to a lot of different info.... But none of it showing A2 is "better" than some of the other steels.... I was primarily comparing it to 52100. And the only benefit i can find over 52100 is it may be less prone to rusting. But from what i have read 52100 will take a better edge, or at least just as good of an edge if all other things are similar (Ht and geometry) and 52100 is a stronger steel.

This is just what i have read and could be wrong though.

Tried using my knife steel app on my phone to show some differences between O1, 52100, and A2, but I dunno. Graphs are fun though right?!?! :D However from this graph I can definitely say I need to check my voicemails, clear my photobucket notifications, and turn off my alarm...

Yeah, everyone should own a .22.

Sorry for saying I couldn't get an Edge on my Yuma Todd, I screwed around with it long enough and got it just right, I'm very picky with my edge's, not too thin, or they won't feather right, not to thick, they won't cut right. :D It's just right ATM and it's out-cutting my thinner BK16 and feathering better than any other blade I own. :)
Plus, your edges need to be able to handle scalp incisions and random flesh cuts that aren't ragged and hard to suture.

As far as A2 goes, my BRKT Bravo is the sharpest (fixed blade) knife I own. Granted, I'm not much of a steel snob, and most of my others are 1095CV Beckers, so I can't say in comparison to much else.

Jeremy,

For "getting into" hunting you require 3 guns. A .22, a 12 gauge, and a rifle. For .22 you can't get any better then a Ruger 1022 or Remington 597. The 597 you can get alot cheaper and the trigger just isn't as nice as the 1022. For a 12 gauge as already mentioned an 870 express with a shot and slug barrel will do anything you need. As far as rifles go, I would stick to bolt action and something .30 cal or higher (depending on what type of game you plan on using it on). This is just my personal opinion, I hope this helps a little. Just wait until you get a taste of it and want to start trying other options like bow hunting ;)

If you own a .22, a 12 gauge, and a .30-06, you can hunt durn near everything on the continent, excepting maybe a grizzly. The beauty of the .30-06 is its wide range of loads. Okay... time to drink.

I am fairly certain my children are trying to kill me. They are attempting to induce either a heart attach or brain aneurysm. They have been on it today... Taking them out to play to hopefully wear them down a bit I decided a little pool time was in order. Maybe their behavior would improve? No... Now I just have wet crazy children. Lol my kids are incredible but man I just can't keep up today.
