. Just wait until you get a taste of it and want to start trying other options like bow hunting ;)

Man i got a recurve bow a while back and have only used it ONCE outside... And i probably wasnt suppose to be using it where i did.. But i was only shooting at a target that i brought with me so i said screw it LOL

I have used it 4 or 5 times in my basement.... But i have to shoot from a kneeling position because the roof is low down there.... And that gets uncomfortable pretty quick.

I like the bow a lot... Just dont have any place close to ever use it... So now its been sitting in a closet for months.....

Just went to the mail box! Got a package from Dex. Brother your stuff is top notch! I am totally recommending his services!

Time to go out and get me an 11 to fill this thing!

First day of work went smooth. Actually, kind of boring, haha.

Sweet sheath TBL!!

And great stuff Warrior, its better to be bored and get paid for it than be bored and spend money LOL

Ok guys. Amanda and I want to take the plunge and get into hunting. Deer, turkey, rabbit, partridge, stuff like that.

What do you guys recommend for guns? I realize one gun won't be good for all the game animals mentioned above. I was thinking about buying one rifle and one shotgun.

We do not have much gun experience but learn quickly. The guns would have to be reliable, easy to maintain, and not super expensive.

Thanks in advance,

Jeremy

The .30-30 is a good deer rifle, for a long time it was the deer rifle and is still very popular. If you decide to buy another rifle for large game Savage offers a whole lot of value. Check used gun shops for used Savage 110's, they can be had for under $300.

Mossbergs and Remingtons have a strong reputation for a reason, they're good guns. But if you're looking to wade in and not spend a lot of money right away I would recommend looking for a used Harrington & Richardson or New England Firearms single shot 12 or 20 gauge. I've found plenty of decent ones for just under $100 and there is good after market support for them so you can turn it into a project. Or hit the pawn shops looking for old department store pumps.

A quality pellet rifle isn't a bad idea for getting into shooting since .22 is in short supply right now.

I'd Recommend a mosin nagant as your rifle, they can be had for less than $200 and with the 7.62x54r being a budget .308 it has more than enough power for most game

Ok to be clear. I didnt say A2 is the best steel on earth...lol I just said that some people I trust have said that it takes an amazing edge.
Ethan specifically was one of the people who mentioned that A2 for some reason seems to be very toothy and sharp sharp sharp. That got me paying attention, then I saw where a few other people had said the same about it taking a screaming edge.
Dont know how well it wears, or how tough it is, but I have heard that it takes an edge like little else. YMMV

ANY Russian ammo is pretty much drying up atm, so I would be hesitant to suggest the Mosin atm, only for that reason. 7.62 is drying up fast.

...A2 for some reason seems to be very toothy and sharp sharp sharp....

"Toothy" and "sharp sharp sharp" are two different things by definition. ;) If you like toothy, look for steels with lots of big carbides (A2 and D2 are probably the most common). If you like polished super-fine edges, look for stuff with almost nothing but iron, and not too much carbon. (that's over-simplifying it quite a bit, of course)

"Screaming sharp" means different things to different people.

This sort of thing can get confusing real quick; it just depends on what sort of edge you like and how you prefer/are able to sharpen. Ask ten people for their thoughts on the steel that gets the "best" edge and you may get 20 opinions.

Thanks for all the recommendations about guns guys. I think I am going to try harder to snag the Winchester 94 from my Dad. Simply for sentimental reasons. I am still looking for a shotgun and a 22 would be fun as well.

Nice sheath TBL! Dex does awesome work, doesn't he?

Jeremy

Ok but to be REALLY clear you did say, "A2 takes an edge like nothing else on earth" :p

-Snark.
Just cause it takes an edge like nothing else, doesn't make it the best! Butter takes an edge like nothing else in the world, but it won't cut $#!+

Ya man! would you happen to know if a 14 will fit? blade length is the same as the 11?
Yes, it will, so will a 24

It would fit but it will fit different. From talking to Dex for a while on the phone we was really adamant about making different sheaths for the BK-11, BK-14 and the Esee Izula. The 11 with micarta is different than the 14 with the Zytel. If I was you I would get in touch with Dex and see how he feels about it. Or, just buy an 11, you know you want one...with micarta.

I do lol but to order one and have it shipped is close to $100 when I buy a 14 in store for $52 and make scales out or this awesome maroon bocote I got on hand :D. I'll send Dex a PM

Or, since ya know, I have GPKnives right across the river from me, I could go pick you up an 11 when I get back from GLIB and mail it to you like I did the other knife for a WHOLE hell of a lot cheaper!

I see your point. Your sheath doesn't look as closed up at the opening as mine is. Maybe he made it more universal..? Either way he will be able to answer any questions you may have.
