My sebenza collection has grown.......lol. Mainly my larges as I have very few smalls. I have so many in boxes that I never see, especially the ones in the new style flimsy cereal box cardboard that if you look at them they rip. I have long seen others post pics of their Pelican cases. Having liked what I saw, I have begun to look into them. For those of you that have them, I have a few questions.....???

I have been looking at the larger ones, mainly the 1500 series and similar which hold the knives vertical. I see they make different heights. Some are 4 1/4" deep, while others are 4 3/4" deep. Since the large sebenzas are 4 3/4", they would sit flush and look pretty easy to extract, while the others would stick out 1/2". What do you guys prefer....? I was looking at the 1500 series with the blue and black hard foam inserts.

For small sebenzas, they would obviously be buried in the bottom of this case. I see they make the hard foam pieces. I am thinking I can get a piece of this, cut it to size and put it in the bottom of some holes to shim it up to where the smalls are easily reachable.

I am still unsure of the slot count I would be looking to get, but would love to see some of these cases with your large sebenzas. Like stated above, I have been looking at the 1500 series with the hard blue and black foam inserts.

For starters, how many Sebenzas do you have? Another consideration is do you want the ends o the knife pressed up against the bottom and lid of the case?

Honestly I have no idea how many sebenzas I have. I am close to your level I know that....lol. I was thinking the 4 3/4" would be best as they would be flush and the lid foam would hold them in place. Nothing digging into eachother.
Currently I have them in maxpedition dodecapods.

Currently I have them in maxpedition dodecapods. I have 3 of those filled and over a dozen in boxes.

Is there any way you can try one out before you shell out the $$$?

Not really, that's why I was asking for pics.....lol and input from those that have them. They are not exactly cheap either.

I use a lot of pelican cases. Many come with "cube-cut" foam that you pluck to make the shapes/voids you want. Not sure if that would work, but it's an option.

Personally, if I had a large knife collection I would want them displayed presentation side facing out, in one of the large flat Pelican equipment cases. Think about how nice it would be to open the case and see the best side of all the knives. Of course that would take up more room, and might require more cases, but might be worth pondering. Maybe get one flat case for your graphics / inlays etc to be displayed, and bulk vertical cases for your PJs and duplicates.

First question, are you looking at the custom nalpak pelican cases or just the regular pelicans?

Also don't limit yourself to Pelican. They are good quality, but not the only option. I can vouch for SKB Cases and UK Cases as well. Check out their websites too. Just as good quality, with more reasonable prices on some items. In particular the UK (Underwater Kinetics) cases are less bulky than the Pelican and I've never had one fail or break a latch or anything. The U.K. cases may have some advantage too with the present exchange rate (Canadian product)

Since plucking the foam cubes out wasn't a super clean look, I had some custom foam inserts made for a project. The company that did the work, did a fantastic job. If interested, I have contact info.

I like the look of the pelican 1500's with the hard blue and black foam. My questions were about sizing. I think the 1400's are similar. The 1170 looks nice but would need far too many of them. I don't mind the vertical display of the other cases. I am just tired of everything being boxed up and would like to get them out to fondle more. The maxpedition so are great but figure it would be nice to have them all together or even split between 2 smaller cases.

Yeah, that was why I was hoping you might be able to put hands on one to see. I'm watching to see suggestions too, since I'm in the same predicament. Too many Sebenzas. :o

I could always get a couple 1300's. They hold 21 each. Too many, that's for sure.....lol

In your case Lone Wolfe, they make larger ones that hold quite a few more.

Like I said, I have no idea how many I have....lol

I'm down to 70, I only know because I created speadsheet to keep track of them. :p

I use 2 pelican but need to add another 1 or 2.. First one is a Pelican 1170 with nalpak insert. Then a 1060 for my UGs... :)

I have tons of experience with pelican hard cases with various inserts and soft cases for high end rifles and pistols. One rifle in particular I spent at least $1000 trying to get the case just right.

One thing I would add for the larger cases that are going to hold a bunch of knives, they are going to be relatively heavy and a little impractical to store. They are also hard to access because they dent and scratch wood surfaces. Ask how I know :) They don't fit in closest well or anything. Rather than try and find one that holds like 50 vertically or something you might be better off going with smaller ones that are horizontal where you will actually pull the case out and look at the knives. Maybe organize them into themes.

Just an idea.

Some good points here. Not speaking for the OP, but I don't want a case so big and heavy that I'll never want to drag it out to look at my knives.

That's why I love the size of the 1170.. or maybe even the 1200s. But LW and Nyefmaker will need a lot of those. I think the 1300s are not too big and just right. :)

I really like the look of the 1170's, but I would need quite a few of them. At $100 each, that gets expensive. I was looking at the 1300. It holds 21 and could get by with a couple of them. I do realize they would be easier to store. I was thinking of the larger cases like the 1500, but immediately thought of the weight. Something too big is harder to store in the safe. That's where several 1170's would shine. In the end, the 1300 is like $117 so that would probably be the best bet. Still think on it but it.
I going with one 4 3/4" deep, I am thinking that would be far better and just get a piece of foam to shim up spots for small sebenzas and mnandi.

How about some combination of 1300s and the 1170? Maybe put your most used knives on the 1170 and the ones you store on the 1300s... :D

I hope to fill up a 1500 sometime in the next 2 years or so.. I think I am done with the buying spree for the rest of the year... :)
