Perfect Length for a Traditional Pocket Knife

3" to 4" closed is just fine for me...preferring 3.5" All these will ride in the watch pocket of my jeans.
3" closed for dress slacks.

it can lie down transverse at the bottom of your jeans back pocket (snugly, meaning it shouldn't be too small.) i reckon 3 1/2 closed.

It depends on each person. Only experience will determine what works for you.

I like knives in the 3.5-3.75" range. But that changes depending on the circumstances. When I go to weddings and such I choose smaller pieces. If I'm going to wear cargo pants and shorts I can carry > 4" knives with ease.

3-5/8" thru 4-1/2" is my favorite carry size. A 4-1/8" trapper in my front pocket does not bother me at all.

Based on what I most consistently carry, I'd have to say the sweet spot for mine is 3-3/4" - 4-1/4". My favorite pattern, by far, is a large stockman, and all of mine fall into this range (Schrade 8OT, Case 6375, Queen #49, Buck 307). I do usually carry a 2nd smaller knife like a Peanut or Sod Buster (Case, Queen), and sometimes a larger No. 08 Opinel. But the large stockman is always a must for me, and is always the first to drop into my pocket every day. :)

3.5-4 and 8oz. And under. Although my native 4 is so awesome as well and I never hesitate to carry it.

I carry and use everything from a little Peanut to a 4-1/4" Stockman from time to time. I like them all. Here lately tho I have been reaching for something in the 3-3/8"-3-5/8" range then pairing it up with a Sod Buster jr. Or my Opinel #7.

I like 4 inch or so blades.

Perfect length for big apples and slicing Tillamook cheese.

3.5" is the smallest I'm comfortable with, generally. Right now I'm carrying my Hampton backpocket, which is 4 5/8".

I have a texas jack right now in my pocket same size as the case medium stockman. I find it kind of annoying when it falls and lays down on my right front pocket as opposed to standing up on along the left side of the pocket (closest to the front). I tried carried a hanky to keep it there but alot of the time this shows do to little about this. Also I have a beautiful grohmann mini russellock 4 inch and I am deciding where within the right front pocket to carry it..

How do you keep your knife in the right place within your pocket? and what is that place for you? or do you just let it swim freely within your jeans

I think it depends what I'm doing or where I'll be. If I'm bumming around town I like about about 3.5 but if I'm up north or outdoors I like a little bigger knife.

I have found myself moving toward longer knives recently. In the past, I would have said 3.5". Now I'd say the sweet spot for me is anywhere between 3.75" and 4.5" closed. The extra length helps keep the knife upright in my front pocket next to my wallet and phone. I also like having a full grip on the handle during use.

Keep it next to your wallet.

At work, a 3-1/4" Buck 303 or a 3-3/8" GEC Conductor is hardly noticeable and about as small as I'm comfortable with using for most simple day-to-day tasks. Those make a great office pocket knife.

At 4-1/4", my Buck 112 is the smallest that gives me what feels like a full four finger grip so that gets weekend time when I want something substantial. Its my favorite workin-at-home pocket knife.

I've been on the hunt for some alternatives that fall somewhere in between these two. Lately I've been warming up to my Opinel 7 since I can get four fingers on it even though they are a little crowded. I got my eye on that GEC #72 though as it seems like it would be a nice compromise for me between pocketability and comfortable grip.

Peanut sized to 4", with my favorites being 3 1/8" to 3 1/2".
