Pet peeves about knife discussions and youtube videos

Is this sarcasm towards my post?

Nope. Just like your Father in law, many people who know very little about knives think any knife that opens quick and has that snapping noise is an automatic. It has happened to me several times. Without even knowing anything about the the knife I am opening (usually to help with some sort of cutting tasked the person is unprepared to handle; no knife) folks will say "aren't switch blades illegal?" I then explain to them what a switch blade is and the type of knife I have can be purchased at the local big box home improvement store down the street. But, as we see in this thread, some people who even go out of their way to post complaints about how others discuss knives don't really know what they themselves are talking about and are confused about some of the basic terminology involved in this hobby and even the legal restrictions based on definitions most of us abide by on a daily basis.

Are flippers sold in Washington? Can you carry one? Is a flipper an Automatic knife? How does a flipper relate to being an Automatic knife legally speaking?

These are basic things we should all either know or come here to learn about.

I think caring too much about blade to handle ratio is a silly aesthetic thing. Some of the best knives ever made have a low blade to handle ratio (looking at you, PM2!). On the other hand, if I buy a flipper I expect it to be auto-like in its performance. Otherwise, I'd rather a different opening method. If you're going to do a flipper, do it well.

What annoys me is when people focus a little too much on the particular steel used rather than other factors which are just as if not more important, such as heat treatment, warranty and overall design.

Hey, you aren't the one who told us all that a flipper is an automatic.

hahahaha!!! you got a point my friend ;-)

I do realize though that the intention I have for a post when I'm writing it may be hard to see when it gets submitted in black and white. After all I'm the only one who knows what I wanna convey. I will keep that in mind

Well said Kwon.

I will say, blade to handle ratio is something I enjoy on my Endura. Good long blade, good long handle, but no wasted space.

Unboxing videos, with no review other than unboxing, confuse me

Yes. Yes. No. The cop can decide your flipper is illegal if he is in the mood.

Believe me when I say all my posts sound exactly how I intend them.......in my head :D

Cutlery lover's obsession with showing all the packaging is a bit much at times but he usually has all the information I like in a review afterword. Can't complain there. One thing I do love is when people put up competitive options so I can get a gauge on size differences. Like a lot of folks I don't get a chance to handle new blades that come out so it is good to see a knife I am considering next to a knife I already have. Late boy scout does this at the end of his reviews really well. We also get to see lots of comparison pics around here which is a huge plus to being part of this community.

Since we're talking about pet-peeves, I have something to get off of my chest.

I frickin' hate when people take knife pics like this:

Why the hell do you think I'm more interested in looking at your arm instead of your knife:confused::mad:

Lol - I agree.

Yes. Yes. No. The cop can decide your flipper is illegal if he is in the mood.

See? That wasn't so hard to admit. A flipper knife is not an automatic knife. Under your law a flipper is up to discretion if it can be deployed with gravity. Under many laws an Automatic is automatically illegal (because it is automatic).

1. blade to handle ratio: it makes or breaks certain knives for me. The goal to me is to have a secure grip with the longest cutting edge, this is done through proper design. Best blade to handle ratio I've seen in a long time is the Kershaw Link btw.

2. flippers: yes, a properly designed flipper should not need wrist action, especially if you are paying more than 50 bucks. With ball bearings, today's flippers should fly out with ease after overcoming the detent.

My point flew right over your head, sorry about that.

I'll try again slowly with small words. If you want a blade that deploys with no effort then get an automatic.

If you want to engage in silly meaningless arguments talk to Craytab! :-)

Your point didn't go over my head. You just didn't make your point very well. I'm glad you came around for a bit there. I'm confused though. You want a flipper to be slow? You think a flipper should be slow? Why? You suggest that if folks want a flipper to be fast they should rather get an Automatic, one which even in your own state is illegal to carry and use? You were doing much better when you admitted to being wrong about what a flipper is. Flippers should flip and automatics are automatics because they are automatic. "Yo, you want that flipper to flip properly fast, get an automatic bud, even though it is likely illegal". Great advice Lol.

I looked through some of my pictures trying to find feet. I think I got rid of most of them. Here we have some feet, a creepy reflection, some knee action, and dust, lots of dust...

My pet peeve is clicking on a thread I might find interesting, or may want to contribute to, and seeing Craytab take one sentence of the OP's post out of context and then jacking the thread with his silly nit-picky drama. I'm not going to post on this thread further, nor will I participate in any arguments he will likely start. I am not trying to troll, be a jerk, or start anything. But with that being said, it really does sadden me to see this crap on every other thread when I am browsing. The OP's point wasn't to define an auto, that's at least how it seemed to me...I believe he was only trying to make the point that the knife may as well be an automatic. Then of course Craytab has to quote it, bold the text, and belittle the OP by spouting off an argumentative statement/correction.

As I said, I'm not even mad, it really just bums me out :( It surely doesn't make new or newer people to the site feel comfortable in joining in on the conversation, and that is what irritates me the most. Just ignore him Krell. Move on, and don't give him the time of day. People like him live for this type of stuff, don't give him the satisfaction.

This^^^
I have noticed .. LOL..
Just about every thread, right or wrong, I see Crabtab involved in some argument. It does get old.

My peeve is checking out a tube video that I think might be interesting only to find out that:
1. the person made no preparations at all before pressing "record" (howzabout a script, dumbass?)
2. the person spends half of the video flipping the blade open and then closing it, without even managing to at least keep their hand in the frame while doing it
3. one of the first five word they utter is "f**k", and they use expletives in place of being able to speak with intelligence and authority (like some standup comics I've heard lately)
4. they provide nothing of value in the way of a review (functionality? fit and finish? price? sharpness on arrival? actual use?)
5. discussion of things that really have no relevance to the topic (i.e. bitching about the way something worked out of the box when it is fully adjustable)
6. lack of a true knowledge of the subject at hand

And for a peeve about discussions: people who think somehow that a high post count means they know more about a subject than someone with a low post count.

I could go on, but wouldn't it be better if i couldn't?

My ideal review would be straight to the point and less about irrelevant things.
It's not Facebook, it's a review. Do not care what you ate 2 hours ago..
I really do not like when video of them unboxing.. Side stories and etc.
Yes! I hate it. Get to the knife and the specs first. Take plenty of footage of the knife open and closed from all angles.

If you want to yammer on about philosophies of use, etc, do it after ALL the technical data is out-hell, include the technical data in the description. That is all I want. Gimme that, so I can GTFO...

...Then yammer on for the TNP'rs or whatever.
