Pet peeves about knife discussions and youtube videos

1. People who have received most of their knife knowledge from YouTube. They usually sound too much like parrots to me and it often leads to my second pet peve

2. Getting established terminology wrong or inventing their own. I've always been a stickler about semantics and yes I realize the meaning of words can change over time but it still bugs me to no end e.g. "the kabar has a rat tail tang" "kabar isn't a full tang knife" "a tru-full tang© is exposed on all sides" "blood grooves purpose is to cause more blood to leave the wound or help break suction so the knife won't hang up as much while stabbing"

When misinformation is spread and repeated then what was wrong becomes correct and what was correct is now wrong, if people would pay more attention to getting things right then the word "literal" wouldn't have lost its literal definition, its also dangerous to knife user's if the long established definition of certain features change, all of a sudden you'll wake up and all of your once legal pocket knives are illegal gravity knives or automatic knives no matter how far from the truth that is

Pet Peeve - Bloviating know-it-alls who have deluded themselves into thinking that their wisdom and knowledge is somehow commensurate with the number of times they've managed to click "post quick reply" on BFC. And Skelton.

I remember watching Bill Dance growing up and they'd incorporate his goofs onto the show (I think, it's been a couple decades) and I loved it, fairly certain I still would.

Stepping off his boat, rolling down a bank...it was a fun bonus on how to properly bump stumps. Too much editing these days, that's what I say.

I believe it was also Bill Dance who would, if a treble hook got embedded deep in his thumb, would show you the proper technique to remove it. A half hour fishing show turned into an exercise in field surgery. Those were always good episodes.

My pet peeve is people chewing loudly with their mouth open when eating....we are humans, not donkeys lol. In all seriousness though, the weather is great.

From experience, as long as you act like a civilized person, you won't run into knife trouble (or trouble in general). Regarding the thread,

1) All aesthetics. I wouldn't want a knife with a bui handle and small blade, but someone else might be into that. All up to end user as always

2) This one doesn't matter too much either, since both methods get the knife open sufficiently.

Trolls that offer nothing by way of discussion. The meat and potatoes of their existence is to simply argue or piss people of by way of being completely annoying, abrasive, and don't realize this is actually a knife forum and not a "drama club forum".

Spreading misinformation because "Mr. Expert" says that is the way it is, and your experiences are not withstanding. also, people that like to argue with those folks that do know they are talking about because they are "moar righter" because they watched a video. They need to write less, and read a whole lot more.

Any video over the 5-6 minute mark, specifically when the knives is being zipped around and the the "ahh, ummm, ahh" start rolling in. Is this video about your inability to discuss the knife or topic, your crack at the information already available for public consumption, or your nervousness? I cannot tell.

People that fancy themselves experts, when it is painfully obvious they are not. These same folks get super butthurt if you question the end of the world flaw they perceive in a specific item. /Cue song from Journey..... Don't Stop, Believin'...

Ultra haters and ultra fanboys, can do just fine without either of them. Most everyone knows who they are, so no need to name names.

I have noticed .. LOL..
Just about every thread, right or wrong, I see Crabtab involved in some argument. It does get old.[/QUOTE]

As a member who has had an account for a while but only really just started browsing the forums, I had to put that guy on my ignore list. Made everything much more pleasant.

I try to keep mine short and to the point as possible, but then I don't shoot that many videos and haven't done one in awhile. :)

Good thing we are in General and dont have to put up with Whine and Cheese-type foolishness!

I don't care for knife reviews that are needlessly long, with too much fluff about the company, (often wrong info, too, or hearsay) or digressions about other things. If I am going to the effort to watch a knife review, it means I would like information about that particular knife, more than I can find from reading a spec sheet or blurb on a dealer's site: show it to me, tell me how it rides in the pocket and functions on a day-to-day basis. Give me some comparisons with other common knives so I can get a sense of size and proportion, since the reviewer has the privilege to have it in his hand and I, alas, do not. Tell me if there are any glaring flaws, tell me what you love, or what makes the knife unique. Don't just regurgitate the same information a Google search for the knife will give me.

I love written reviews with pictures. I'll take a good written review or test over a video any day. Your blade steel testing thread is a prime example. Also, Mistwalker's reviews are a thing of beauty. It is much harder to take your time and put together a well thought out written review or test. I guess that is why there are so many terrible video reviews. Nothing is worse than a guy who just joined and posts a review in the review and testing subforum but when you click on the thread and it is just a link to his stupid youboob channel. Don't get me wrong, videos in concert with content and reputation here are good too but just pushing clicks to a channel ads nothing of value to this community.

I do written reviews much more than videos. :)

Yes, size comparison is very important. And along those lines also how the sheath is for fixed blades. It is hard to tell the functionality and fit of a sheath from pictures. A great knife can become useless or far more expensive if the sheath doesn't fit my requirements. Gideonstactical does a good job of covering the sheath aspects and what he likes is along the same lines as what I require. come to think of it there are really only 3 youtube reviewers I will regularly watch. He is one of them

Reviewers spending time showing video of themselves cutting paper or cardboard, or making feather sticks. Knives cut things. I get it.

"Sharpness out of the box." is similarly pointless.

Yes sir. If you use it, it will dull, and you will need to sharpen it. If you don't use it, it does not need to be sharp. So either way, it is pointless. Now to not have a point on your knife is a different story :D

Short Videos- I guess I'm the only one from these responses. I don't watch knife reviews when I don't have time to watch knife reviews. Videos under 5 minutes are most often the type with an unprepared 'bro' with very little to say about the knife other than that they like it.

Bad background- Is it too much trouble to find a background that doesn't have stains from lunch all over it? How about one that doesn't always pull the focus of the lens every time you move the knife?

Bad Finger Hygiene- Ew, c'mon guy! It's bad enough you have weird thumbs, you can at least file those claws down buddy.

Persisting with a close up when your camera can't do it- Always with the, "alright, let me try to show you...hold on...damn thing, c'mon..." This is your 10th video, guy! Your crap camera can't show me the micro bevel. Either get a new one or just stop trying to do a close up, it's that simple.

"What's up guys?!" - Ugh.
