Processing antique micarta for the NASK pre-order. I love this stuff, it's always so interesting inside when you cut it. It almost has a wood grain character where the oxygen has seeped in over the years darkening it and making it streaky.

You can tell it's really hard by looking at the load meter during the decking cuts. The face mill was registering about a 3 HP cut in this, significantly higher than modern micarta.

Will antique micarta be an option for the HDFK D2 Prototypes?

No, sorry. The antique micarta will finish up in a couple weeks, we're still in the first op. We're making enough to cover the pre-order and a few extra but not many. They're actually a bear to make, there is a lot of work that goes into it.

The only scales we made for the prototypes are black and natural micarta and a few thin ones in green micarta.

No problem Nate, I have a HDFK in D3V on order with antique micarta.

Are the green micarta significantly thinner?

Very glad I ordered one of the 2 preorder NASKs (aka HDFK) with the antique edgecut micarta :)

I'm not much into Hazelnutty stuff so if mine comes with either the chocolate brownie one (2nd from top) or the walnut chocolate (bottom), I'll be well chuffed.

However, beggars can't be choosers!

If you end up not wanting it.. I got first dibs!

I gather from this answer that the likelihood of having the antique micarta scales as an option for the EDC-2 preorder is slim or none? And what do they say about slim leaving somewhere?

Keep in mind they will oxidize quickly so they will all look the same before too long.

Can you smoke it? What does it taste like in a curry? If I light it on fire does it spontaneously combust in a way said to be "product favored"?

JK of course... It looks like the good stuff...

Does this stuff have a product lineage? Any insight into chemical makeup or changes in process?

I don't know the lineage of this scales material. I do know it is very old because the darkening from oxygen has seeped in very deep, completely through in many places. It takes a long time for that to happen. The resin is brown from age, not pigment. In fact there are areas where it hasn't fully darkened yet where we see a pretty cool brindle coloring. The cotton is also yellow from age. To my eye it looks the same color and translucency of this known material and I think there is a good chance that's what it is, though I don't actually know:

^ That piece isn't mine, but it is marked. My micarta comes from machined bars that I'm slabbing up on a saw and laminating to black liner. Like other authentic antique micarta I've worked with it is harder and more fully impregnated than materials available today. It machines beautifully and polishes very nice. I wish modern materials were this nice to work with. I think they literally don't make it like this anymore.

Lineage unknown, I'm processing it from already machined material than has been turned down. They're phenolic shafts I bought surplus that came from a boat manufacturer. It's my understanding it was used to make a bearing/seal where the prop shaft exited the hull. I'm told they used to use lignum vitae for this but changed over to micarta back in the 50's. It is phenolic and cotton based.

Which one is yours? Do you have a build thread on TacomaWorld?

Mine is my daily driver, and with 100 miles round trip a day I plan to keep it mild for the first couple years. Then I'll grab a car as a DD and go deeper into mods.

I was planning on driving down to CBI next summer to have sliders, rear bumper and hidden winch mount installed. Doing a second battery and canopy over winter. Wheels and tires. Stereo as well, mount some odds and ends and some other personalization odds and ends.

So far I've only done a few small cosmetic things, and lighting. About $1000 so far. Kinda because I want to put some millage on it, make sure there are no problems and I like it enough to put the 20k or so into it I expect it will take. Also I'll have to cut back on knives. I spent way too much on them this year.

You mention a shop and the write ups. So I expect your a more competent DIY guy than myself. I might have to come down for a coffee at some point!

In the pic - mine is the one in the foreground. I am on TacomaWorld under the same username (Benson X) - but I don't spend as much time on there as I used to. I have a build thread that is in dire need of an update, and also a few DIY write-ups and threads that I've contributed over the years. I have a ton of good info. but I don't want to whore it out on BF or clutter up this thread.

Feel free to email me at Bwares AT ymail dot com (it is Ymail, not Gmail) if you want to exchange contact info. If you ever find yourself travelling South - we can definitely meet up to discuss and enjoy the finer things in life (knives, trucks, beer and women) :)
