Work in progress pic. Changed out 3 sets of scales on my edc's and started doing the finish work on the scales. Thanks to jo for getting these out to me so quick!

I haven't gotten mine yet so I'm curious to see how much finishing these require.

Just checked the tracking. Looks like I'll be waiting until Tuesday.

Am considering hitting them with some Rit just to add a bit more flavor.

They really weren't bad at all the needed to be smoothed out a bit and the edges needed to be cleaned up a bit. I gotta pick up some mineral oil tomorrow to finish them up.

What is rit and what would it do to the scales?

None of you want em' super grippy. A TON if you want them to look like a Fiddleback custom.

I can't wait for my sapphire shadetree scales to show up. The EDC they are going on is quite the user so I likely won't even mess with them much.

I'm with you Manofsteel, it will really add more life to my EDC. Going to seal and buff them though just to keep them clean.

Im looking into how to seal them up now. i was looking at the superglue method but it seems like it'd be a bear to work with. I was also reading about people using furniture wax to seal up the micarta. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

If it was simple and easy it would have already been done! Keep in mind these were originally rejected by Nathan.

Not much sleep around here yet with a newborn, but on the bright side of my insomnia fit I did manage to rub out one Sapphire set. Unfortunately my EDC was in the nightstand, and I was going nowhere near a finally sleeping mom/baby to get it.

Without having the spine as a guide you may notice some cosmetic alignment spots where I got a little carried away with the lower grit. Very minor, for me, and I think they look great imperfections and all. Really, it's the Shadetree Evergreen (my favorite of the burlaps) that I want to be near perfect.

If I learned anything from this first set: A) have the knife, or some form of cutout guide to mate the scales too for finishing. B) finish the front edge prior to attaching to work on the rest of the scale as not to mark up the blade if using the knife as a guide C) my sapphire set was heavy with epoxy and I spent more time than needed rubbing with 220. The evergreen look to be in less rough of a shape so that might be a fine starting point, otherwise start lightly with 120/150 grit. D) I went up to 1000 but would have been fine at 800 - I used wet/dry sand paper and a small piece of yoga mat for the backer (I'm too cheap for scotch brite)

the shadetree scales on my edc are getting nice and grubby! They have a great feel to them, though. Kind of a fur coat as opposed to a leather jacket, lol

there's no doubt in my mind that the standard handle materials offered by CPK are superior in quality to the shadetree material, but in the big picture, these colourful handles are definitely good enough to last a lifetime. Sometimes the gulf between 'the best' and 'pretty good' is, in practice, quite narrow even though in theory the divide is quite wide

I think we could expand on the concept of superiority along different domains: durability, impact resistance, feel, grip, and presentation.

Personally, I consider shadetree to be superior in terms of grip, especially when wet, which also has relevance to feel. Presentation and the aesthetic quality of the scales are also quite high.

Micartas will likely excel in terms of durability and material stability, certainly have their own presentation strengths, and the grip is subject to debate though they have a distinctive feel and character.

From an industrial perspective, clearly the micartas are more workable and offer greater consistency.

I like the EDC, but the above picture shows the basic fit issue I have with the model. My ring finger lands very uncomfortably on the pronounced lower swell of the EDC grip.
