They make pretty neat cookies in logs, more specifically poles. They are anti split devices for utility poles. They get pounded in to the top or butt of the pole to stop a split from going through.
I will try to get a pic of one in a pole another time.

Makes sense. Kind of like the rectangular grid plates on the end of a railroad tie, to keep it from splitting on the ends.
