Took the HDFK out for a fishing expedition. Decided to skin out a baby gar with just it.

filleted it beautifully. But I’m telling you these are uparmored dinosaur fish and it rolled the edge enough it can’t shave hair and you can see the light reflection on the edge.

this is pretty damn good performance, I’ve done considerably more damage to other knives doing same thing and that’s why a lot of folks use machetes or hatchets to skin these out.

I’m sure a quick pass over a stone with bring the blade back to life.

I’d be interested to see what happens after resharpening and then put to the same task.
Here’s why:
With one of my CPK’s (EDC2), I put it through an abusive day of cutting through shielded communication wire. It did phenomenally well cutting through the steel shielding. But at the end of the day I could feel with my finger nail that the edge was rolled. I put it on the wicked edge at the end of the week and got rid of the roll. A few months later I was demo-ing a space and came up against the same type shielded wire. More of it than the first time, but this go around my edge did not roll at all.
I have done similarly abusive things with my HDFK, BC, and FK2. None have experienced the minor edge roll at all. HDFK has been used the most. It has cut through metal fencing and associated staples that had once been fastened to a tree I took down. No edge damage.
That same HDFK has (accidentally) been batoned into rocky ground. It split and chipped a couple of the small stones it hit. I expected the edge to have a few dings in it. It didn’t.
These experiences have led me to believe that the first edge rolling was an anomaly.
With my BC I’ve chopped down two trees (6-8” diameter) and done 10+ hours of brushwork with zero edge damage that I could see or feel. I’ve never sharpened it and would guess it will still cut paper cleanly.
All that said, I haven’t cleaned any gar.

Also don't forget that GravelFace most likely received the hand-me-downs and test knives from Jo so maybe they were already veterans of being abused in the past. A long tome ago Jo told me that they rarely keep too many of their own minty fresh knives because they just can't afford to! #cpksacrificeis4realz

Cap’n Smudge Cap’n Smudge exactly the same scenario I’ve had with a couple Busses over the years. They seem to hold a better edge after the first few sharpenings.

With the HDFK I was still pleasantly impressed the way it performed skinning along the inner edge of the of skin (armor plate ) I was really hoping to land a 4-5 footer today and hit it with the Behemoth but there’s always next time!

I’m going to a buddies property this weekend, hopefully deal with a hog infestation and get to put a number of blades to work!

Gravelcub holding him.

Hahahah. These gar have worked me over for years! I used to get close and on more than one occasion got bit on the forearm. Once I had a bite that wouldn’t heal and when I squeezed the “infected” area, a damn gar tooth popped out.

not to mention also, one spun on me and I caught a hook through the pinky. I tried to pull a John Rambo and push the barb through but soon realized I was too much of a bitch and drove my ass to the hospital to have it cut out professionally!

and come on....crocs are the official footwear of the south!!!!

All in a days work of relaxation on the marsh!!!!

Ohh man a buried in fish tooth !!! Ugh that’s bad :-( I’ve had some glass and gravel buried under the skin ,, but never a tooth !?!???!

Those barbed hooks are brutal. I got myself fly fishing, hooked my head lol. Lots of tequila on that outing lol.

If you say so on the foot wear. But I’d be looking at some heavy leather steel reinforced motor boots !!!!!! Lol :-)

Again thanks for sharing the pics :-) really great !!

I’m the shift reptile handler. There’s a Facebook post of me catching a moccasin That I caught hell for due the the way I was holding it.....causing “stress” to the snake....

I turned down a raccoon in the house the other day. Reptiles I’m good with. Now a raccoon.....that’s dangerous.
