can you believe I took this picture of Jo's comp chopper with my cell phone?

My old phone took really good pictures. Good enough for print. My new phone... not so great...

I appreciate it when folks with better photography skills and tools take good pictures of my work. I really do.

I can! All my pics are from my phone. Oddly enough, those pics of the Kephart were on my old Galaxy S7. Got a new S20 in December which supposedly has a better camera (3 of them!) but I swear the old S7 took better pics of knives. Maybe there are some settings on the new phone that I'm unaware of that would make things better. I keep saying to myself I'm going to look into it but I probably never well. Here's to old tech!

I was cleaning/organizing the shop this weekend and came across a serendipitous surprise!

I found a box of EDC scales I had forgotten about; some Black G10, Maroon G10 and a set of rough/unfinished Shadetree Burlap in Sapphire that Jo had posted up over 4 years ago! 😲

I spent about 4 hours trying to sand/buff them by hand and it was quite the arduous process...

Started with 180 grit, then 400, then finished with some polishing compound and 1500 grit. I did a "final(?)" coating with some quality wax to fill some of the voids and try to get some luster on them. Not gonna lie - hand finishing this rough burlap is a chore and did not yield the perfect finish/quality that I've come to appreciate from CPK.

I will say the Shadetree Burlap has a FANTASTIC tactile and textural feel, esp. with a nice wax coating soaked into the exposed fibers and small pits/voids between the resin. At the risk of sounding pretentious - I'd say they have a silky, almost organic, feel to them compared to finished G10 or micarta; almost the soft underbelly of a snake or lizard. They seem very resilient and durable and I have no doubt with regular use they will naturally smooth and polish a bit more and the color will start to darken with time.

I have not installed them on an EDC (yet) and wondering if I should any more sanding or polishing on them...

The pics are not great - camera phone with shop LED and Fluorescent lighting and a few with using a flash to show the texture. The raw/unfinished pic is not very flattering but a couple hours later started to reveal a diamond in the rough. The fiber "striations" on the edges look fantastic! I will get them installed and try to take some better pics with natural lighting sometime soon.

:thumbsup:Your Sapphire Shadetree are looking nice. I finished out a set of Electric Plum and Evergreen. The Shadetree were one of my favorite scale materials when I use to hang out at the Fiddleback forum.
