For some reason, when I'm on the tractor or working in the yard at Mom's ol' place, I just prefer to have a small fixie on me.

Today, it was nice & cool here in South Texas. (*only 95 degrees) So, I got to trimming some overgrown small trees/bushes that have been riding my last nerve for the last few months. The little DEK2 was the "knife du jour"...

It's a great all around size...like for taking the dog out for a walk at night.

Bruh. Seriously. You have no idea how profound your post is.

A little story...

My Dad (*RIP) passed in '12, and my Mom is in the final throws of Alzheimer's. Because of my current sh!t-show, I'm living in their old house.

A few weeks back, an older Gentleman, the Father of a Buddy of mine (*I grew-up in this particular house), and his dog, got attacked by two vicious dogs that escaped their backyard. In his attempt to stop the attack, he fell and fractured a bone, and his dog sustained some "bite" injuries. The two attacking dogs were subsequently seized, and one was put down.

Anyhow, I walk my fat/old/little puppy (*"Crystal") either really early in the morning or late in the evening. We keep to ourselves and try to avoid any human or K-9 contact.

Despite that, because of the above attack, here is my current "dog walking" combo... (*I'd absolutely HATE to have to strike or stick a dog, but wouldn't hesitate if it was overly vicious or committed)

If you're read, (not necessarily recommended), some of my posts over the past several months, my dog was attacked twice and I had occasion to do battle with the offending dog...with an Irish blackthorn stick, kicks and punches. I did not stab or shoot the dog. Stabbing is way low on my list, but still an option.

I am feeling a lot less likely to be as reasoned and measured in future.

I prefer a longer stick for a viscous dog. Cane?
Edit: or of course what Blues said while I was slowly typing.
The blackthorn was useless against the pit. Too light. I'd have been better off skewering it with the stick instead of beating it. I couldn't get to the head because my dog's head and its were in too close proximity. Limiting my targets of choice.

I now carry a stick sent to me several years ago by a buddy in TX.

It's got a steel core, (with a wooden dowel in the pipe), covered in epoxy and painted to look like a blackthorn. The head is madrone burl.

The company is no longer active.

If you get hit with this thing, you stay hit. It's a beast.

I really haven't jumped in these conversations often through the years when they come up. Mostly because I absolutely love dogs and it still bothers me that it happened the way it did.

I am the one who had to use my EDC2 to stop a young pitbull that attacked me while I was mowing my parents yard. I never even considered that would be anything I'd use or ever need to use for that, but I'm very thankful that it's such a great little carry knife. I've carried one of the EDC models nearly daily since I got my first, which wasn't long before that incident.

I didn't know until after the DEK1 was released that Lorien and Nathan took that incident into consideration when they developed the DEK1. But after I got my first DEK it was very apparent that it was well thoughtout for such a purpose.

I still carry either an EDC of some variation or a DEK1 nearly everyday no matter what I'm doing or where I go. And I'm very thankful to have tools that carry and work so well.

A knife would never be my choice for that purpose, probably a good stick if I had one would be. If that failed my handgun. But as fast as it happened I didn't have time to think, it was just reaction.

A good sheath from Grog (for those who remember him) and my intro to CPK knives, an EDC2. Saved me lots of stitches minimum.

Looks and sounds like a Mendowood stick. I had one of those a long time ago and reached out to Bob a decade or so ago to try and get another, and he unfortunately had health problems and stopped. Not even sure he's still with us, unfortunately.

Local laws vary, but a sword cane might be an option, depending on locale.

My personal take;
Carry pepper spray. Spray any off leash dog that gets aggressive and comes within the spray's ~10' reach.

Some stupid mammals only learn when there are negative consequences involved. Maybe the owners will learn to not let their a-hole dogs run free when their spicy mutt comes whining to them, and their own eyes start burning (might also train the dogs that getting aggressive with strangers can hurt).
