In and edge quench, the line doesn't form in the temper it forms in the quench - therefore it is a quench line.

If you fully hardened the blade, and then set the edge in a pan of water and drew the spine down with a torch and it left a mark that could be seen in the finished knife - that would be a temper line.

I learned some of my bladesmithing in the Philippines from a Negretto who spoke very Little English.
Some of the terms ring in my ears every time I make a blade. Like
"Make knife hot like sun in morning rain time" Red sun.
We quenched our blades in Sea water mixed with detergent that was warmed.
"Like pee on hand" 98 degrees.
The tempering was done by by placing the spine of the blade on the coals and watching the color raise through the steel
" Stop ocean and land" Straw on the cutting edge and purple bought an inch back.
One of my many teachers who was illiterate, but knew what he was doing.
