Pics of customized production knives

First and second attempt at modifying knives.

Acid stone washed the blades, liners, and pocket clips.
Oxi-Clean boiled and stone washed the titanium scales.
Reshaped the 0801 into a wharncliffe styled blade.

^^^Those look like Barrage Liners. Way to recycle designs.
Now that I'm looking at the blade, it also looks similar to the Barrage. It looks like they changed the grind slightly, reshaped the G10 over the same liners, and called it a different knife.

I had to glue it together with acrylic glue. If you look close you can see the line. I am going to try and make my own with epoxy and glow powder someday.

Here's what I had to re-create on the back side of the scales...

Keyman, I know you've said you do your mortising with a dremel in the dremel drill press contraption. Are you using the dremel router bit to cut these pockets out? I ask because that's what I've been using, but my cuts look nothing like your's, these in particular look amazingly precise.

I think Keyman posted a picture of the backside of the original scales. IMHO, only a CNC machine can router that clean and accurate. There's no way I could ever mill the backside that clean.... I've been using that router bit too. Dulls really quick, especially on LSCF! I did recently get a dremel 'tungsten carbide cutter, #9901' though. Haven't used it yet, but I think it should cut similar to the router bit but hold an edge longer.

Keyman, if you would, could you post a pic of the backsides of your milled scales? I'm very curious too! I will get around to posting my scale jobs soon.... I have several sets of carbon fiber shred on the chopping block. My F&F probably isn't quite as good as yours but I only make them for myself....

I love seeing your work. Some very original stuff, and I thank you for your candor.

draggat is correct...............and thank you draggat for the kind words
The inside of the scale picture is the factory scales, not mine.
Those scales are enroute to the customer.
So, I am unable to show what the back side of those look like.
Mine don't look just like that, but when hollowing out G10, kirinite, or juma they do come out very clean.
Micarta, TeroTuff and Damagrip is very fiberous, so cut's are not as clean.
I use a tile cutting bit.
They last longer than most of the others I've tried.
However, one must be very careful when using a fresh/new one; the are very sharp and can easily rip the matreial you are routing right out of your hands.
Once the bit dulls, a bit, it is much easier to control the feed.

With the way I make scales, no matter what I'm doing, drilling, sanding or routing......my hands never leave the scales.
There is no automation here.
No clamping the material down, setting the machine and walking away.
No sir, my scales truly are "Hand made".

Here's the back side of some grips (mini & full size) That I have done in the past.
You can see that the micarta scales [the first pic] are a little fuzzy, where as the routing on broken scale [second pic], which is made of a metal composite, the cuts are quite clean and concise.
As well as in the thid pic (juma).

These pics are what I would consider old.
I have made hundreds of scales since then.
So, my work has become more clean and precise than what is pictured here.

draggat where do you get your shred CF?
I'm looking for some Blue and USA is all out.

I picked it all up at USA. Far as I know, they're the only dealer for it. That stuff didn't last very long. I think they still have the silver in 1/8" and 3/16". Just picked up one of those this week and it should be here today. The blue is pretty subdued and the copper really shines. Both look amazing. I hope they get more in too because this material looks really good. I really wanted some black marble cf, but it sold out too quick. You could email and ask when they expect another shipment. They're good folks there.

BTW, thanks for all the info. You've got some great skill! I wish I had enough time to work on this stuff more. I've only done about 25 so far and the first 10 were serious learning experiences. It sure is a bummer when you screw up an expensive blank. Luckily that hasn't happened for quite a while. I picked up a step drill that you mentioned somewhere, but can't find all the right sizes, so I mainly use forstner (if I can find the size) and brad points, with a whole lot of hand adjustments and practice holes. Hope you don't mind me picking your brain on this stuff!
