pics of poison or dangerous plants

Might be just the book I have been looking for.
Thanks.

Here is a pic of the Ocotillo I mentioned earlier. Perhaps not poisonous but don't grab anything.

I`m sorry I don`t have any photos, but don`t have a camera yet,but here where I live, there are some very poisonous plant.Although many of Apiaceae or Umbelliferae family are edible and commonly used in traditional medicine, two of them are extremly dangerous-Cicuta virosa(water hemlock or cowbane)and Conium maculatum(poison hemlock)very common in Europe. As for poisonus on touch Convallaria majalis or Lily of the Valley, evry part of the plant is deadly poisonus, even though in tradd. med. is belived to cure almost any desease, after handling hand should be washed thoroughly. It was noticed that child died after drink water from vase where flowers were.

I don't believe ocotillos are poisonous--though I'll have to double-check. Personally, I'm more intimidated by cholla cacti. You can usually find a way to hold a length of cholla stem if you're careful and get your fingers between the thorns. Not so with a cholla. (And, for what it's worth, some cholla have buds that are full of calcium, which can be hard to get otherwise in the desert; a lot of the natives around here would go to great trouble to harvest cholla buds, roast them, and eat them.)

I always thought the Ocotillo were beautiful, nonthreatening plants. Then I took a close look and those thorns are hidden and really sharp. You could walk up on one and really get hurt. Well, I could but I'm a lot clumsier than most of you.

I may be wrong but I don't think that's Mayapple (P. peltatum). It may have a different appearance on the left coast, but here in the east, it looks different than your picture. See here. Note how along the sides of the leaf in my linked picture, it is not toothed except at the ends. In your picture it is toothed along the sides. Also our Mayapple has a kind of shiny surface, whereas in your picture, it doesn't seem to.

Also, there is no height perspective - if you are standing up in that picture, that would suggest the plant is maybe 3-1/2 - 4 feet high. Here in the east, it only grows maybe 18 " high.

I checked with usda plants - it doesn't show Mayapple growing on the west coast - see here. Scroll down for the distribution map. Also Flora of North America here.

Maybe pitdog has some info on this.

I'm kneeling but I am really interested in what it is. Others have said Mayapple but I was waiting for you and K.Estela to check in with your suggestions. Pitdog your insights are requested as well.

These are driving me nuts as well.

Any idea? I started another thread on Plants I can't ID. I'd love an education!

A couple of suggestions:

You have a digital camera, so take more shots - shots of the leaf top and underside, closeup on the margin (edges) of the leaf, closeup of the stalk, closeup of how the leaf attaches to the stalk (whether it has a leaf stalk or not, whether it 'cups' around the stalk etc.), pictures of the flower/fruit if there are any. Dimensions of leaves, stalk, total plant. When you take pictures of plants you want identified, place something, say like a dark piece of poster board behind the plant, so that only that plant is in the picture. It's very difficult to identify some plants with just one shot of part of the plant.

You said you'd love an education - don't try to get it off the internet. Buy the books, go on local plant hikes, etc. The internet can be a great addition to other education, but not as a stand alone, IMHO.

Just my $0.02.

Great suggestions! I have several books but can't find everything. I will take more pics and compare to the books. Thanks Doc. Your .02 is worth a lot.
